I need a DVD player. It'd be cool if it could play mpegs and xvid and stuff. VHS would be nice, but I could just get a VHS player elsewhere. (I also need a coax in, so I was thinking that DVD+VHS wouldn't have these but a junker VHS would). How do I purchase shitty consumer electronics?

Machibuse '80 (ex machina), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 04:27 (nineteen years ago)

i need new speakers. i don't want to spend a lot of money, but i want better ones than the old ones, which were deemed very shitty by several people (i don't care, they were free, stolen from my dad).

fellini-esque-lit-rockist (tehresa), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 04:44 (nineteen years ago)

i just got a new dvd player i'm totally pleased with. philips dvp5140. plays dvds, xvid, divx, lots of other media files, basically anything you throw at it. takes 2 seconds to change to multi-region. remote contorl is pretty dece. and it was cheap!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 04:51 (nineteen years ago)

does it have coax in?

Machibuse '80 (ex machina), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 05:47 (nineteen years ago)

I NEED A TV

killy (baby lenin pin), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 10:51 (nineteen years ago)

why the hell you need coax in on a DVD player?
you mean "coax OUT" because your TV only has coax in?
In that case you can't use a VCR to bridge the coax gap because Macrovision will reckanize and fuck your signal up.
The best tool for the job is a pelican switchbox or a A/V receiver unit.
If you find a DVD player with a built-in coaxial output let me know because I'm pretty sure the MPAA might pay me for the information.
What you want to do is take the make and model slocki referenced and type it into froogle. you're in fucking NYC, you have more consumer electronics retailers than humans know how to deal with.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 11:29 (nineteen years ago)

jon, just do a series of websearches on whichever model, print it out and take it to either j&r or pc richards...they will typically match price. or take the same info up to midtown and haggle.

other option is to go out to flushing and haggle, but yr korean and mandarin skills might make it tricky.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 12:33 (nineteen years ago)

get thee to radio shack, boys. now, i'm not The Most Savey in this arena, but there are a variety of little boxes and converters to help new things communicate with old things. sometimes that gets xpensive (as it did for the last installation we did at the fireproof), but there should be a way.

whoa, thats like 16 bucks, i should get one of those. as i also need dvd player (cause im dying to watch this ira cohen thing).

bb (bbrz), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 12:33 (nineteen years ago)

The new Philips DVP5140 NTSC/PAL dvd player is a worthwhile upgrade to the popular Philips DVP642. The Philips DVP5140 produces a much better picture than the DVP642. The DVP5140 is "DivX Ultra" certified. The DVP5140 is an excellent example of Philips "plays it all" DVD players.

The DVP5140 uses a 12 bit/108 MHz video system instead of the 10 bit/54 MHz system used in the DVP642. The 12 bit/108 MHz video system produces visibly sharper images and natural colors. The quality of the picture on my 42 inch Plasma HDTV is very impressive.

One major complaint with DVD players concerns their inability to play damaged discs. The DVP5140 has successfully played imperfect discs that other players couldn't handle.

Using the "display" button on the remote, you can view the bit rate and other interesting information about the disc being played.

Bushwick Radio Shack was seemingly unable to comprehend what I wanted.

mr. brojangles (sanskrit), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 13:00 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, people at radioshack tend to be utter morons...if you go to one, try and find the oldest person in there. they tend to be better with knowing why radio shack exists at all (those times when electronics were less standardized and often required or allowed tweaking by the consumer to make a variety of things work to thir specifications). the one on manhattan ave (get thee to the B43) is pretty good. those are the guys i dealt with when trying to sequence a few (entirely different and from 80's/early 90's) monitors together.

bb (bbrz), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 13:09 (nineteen years ago)

I have a region-free Pioneer that also does QUALITY PAL conversion (not like those mickey mouse Philips flip-jobs). It was like $200 though a few years ago. There's a company in the East Bay that sells them, let me see if they've got a website.
