Lots of Sundays, today -- mostly RW&A. Am expecting two Revelers albums but couldn't find the one I wanted, which was "Better Get Hit in Your Soul". So I hope I like the other two.

I didn't like Newsome at McCarren Pool; it was okay as background music but not for standing around at a show and being quiet for. But the same is true of lots of other music I like, so I'm probably just being contrary.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 14:35 (eighteen years ago)

EXCEPTER TRIBUTE BAND

Machibuse '80 (ex machina), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 15:28 (eighteen years ago)

im really likeing the new stuff. i can see laurel's point and expect a lot of people won't wanna hear her sing 16 minute epics, but i think i'd find a collection of little pop numbers precious and unbearable. her voice is much more focused and strong, shed of some of the excessive idiosyncracies of her earlier stuff and the arrangements are pretty batty from what i can follow. much more cellular and circular construction of how melodic lines come in and out, etc...less cleverness and cutesyness (though its still a bit cute and twee at times)and more into a fucked take on old shirley/dorothy collins epic ballads and the like. jim orourke's done a nice job to add very subtle bits of strings and noise to make things a bit more lush and etherial (rather than drawing room/chambery).

ill work up a full review this week, but it wont be published for ages. a friend commented it was "this is slightly insane. two parts bambi, one part willow, four parts dark crystal?" theres also some very melanie-ish moments (which i noticed at the pool show).

Grizzly Man OST

The Richard Thompson stuff is incredible. The group improv stuff with Jim O'Rourke and Henry Kaiser is passable, I haven't really warmed up to it yet. The Don Edwards song is a grower, I hated it and now it's okay.

I have never heard Joanna Nesom but I've seen her 2x (the last time was a longgggg time ago, I think hstencil was road-managing smog!). I can't really recall any thing memorable about it.

jesus...ive moved on to mbv: you made me realize and something called morris on, which is very silly english nonsense evidently...what do i download sometimes...i dont think i can deal with this...

and joanna newsom is just one of those love hate things...unbearable to some, delightful to others...

i listened to the new dylan while visiting a freind at work last fri evening...it makes sense in a dive-ish bar...its an old man record.

"delightful"???

disappointing goth fest line-up (orion), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 16:54 (eighteen years ago)

yes ian, for the effect she manages on those that enjoy her, i think "delightful" is fitting word choice...

(multi-XXXpost)
Lefty Frizell had the right attitude about being an old man

Said an old man to a good-lookin' girl
Well, I've been around this big, wide world
That home on the hill, well, honey that's mine
I've got the money if you've got the time

Well, I'm not too old to cut the mustard anymore
I can stlll get around like I did before
So come along with me my sweet, sweet hon
I'm an old, man lookin' for fun.

What I can do now, most young men can't
There's not a town this old boy can't paint
I can make all the night clubs any old time
I may be a little old but I'm doin' all right.

Well, I'm not too old to cut the mustard anymore
I can stlll get around like I did before
So come along with me, my sweet, sweet hon
I'm an old, old man lookin' for fun.

Don't take me wrong I just want have fun
Have someone along to help me spend my mon
'Cause you don't live but once, so please understand
That I'm an old, old man tryin' to live while I can.

word. I'll listen to the Dylan again, tho.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 17:01 (eighteen years ago)

modern times has a similar feel to the radioshows to my ears ... and both remind me of sitting in odd bars talking to old men, which i do enjoy.

1974 found Nilsson back in California, and when John Lennon moved there during his separation from Yoko Ono, the two musicians rekindled their earlier friendship. Lennon was intent upon producing Nilsson's next album, much to Nilsson's delight. However, their time together in California became known much more for heavy drinking and drug use than it did for musical collaboration. In a widely publicized incident, they were ejected from the Troubadour nightclub in West Hollywood for drunken heckling of the Smothers Brothers. Both also caused property damage during binges, with Lennon trashing a bedroom in Lou Adler's house, and Nilsson throwing a bottle through a thirty-foot hotel window.

To make matters worse, Nilsson ruptured a vocal cord during the sessions for this album, but he hid the injury due to fear that Lennon would call a halt to the production. The resulting album, Pussy Cats, which may charitably be described as "uneven", was a shock for listeners who knew Nilsson as one of the best singers of his generation.

Rickey -- been listenin mainly to the complete 1959 CBS recordings for the last week or so - Mingus Ah UM and Mingus Dynasty - but also broke out Let My Children Hear Music and East Coastin'. so good. I just love the way the band turns "Mood Indigo" into a rave-up on Dynasty.

thinking about starting a project of listening to his complete everything in chronological order (only really missing the Debut stuff at this point), but everytime I embark on one of those I never finish. like the time I had grand intentions to listen to everything Miles ever recorded and never made it past the Parker sessions....

If you're anything like me, you'll get around to playing all the Mingus you own sooner rather than later. I was listening to "Town Hall Concert" this afternoon.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Friday, 29 September 2006 05:37 (eighteen years ago)

Hmm, did that Mingus comment sound like an order? Anyway, I just meant that I seem to cycle through the 25 or so albums I own by him once a year or so. There are eight or 10 -- Mingusx5, "Mingus Ah Um," "Mingus Presents Mingus," "Cumbia and Jazz Fusion" -- that I give relatively continuous play around here, but it really is all good.

P.S. I'm so excited! Andrew Hill is playing Seattle at the end of October.

Edgar Broughton Band "Sing Brother Sing", CD reissue of early seventies brit u/g rock. I used to own it & dig it years ago. It's not very good. Kind of lame sub-beefheart w/self-righteous preachy lyrics mixed w/early '70's freak/hippie scene chauvanist piggery. I shhould have bought a Patto album or another Groundhogs album, aor maybe some Budgie instead.
