PRKLTR (flezaffe), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 13:59 (nineteen years ago)

I can't see anything there but I have two words for you:

JAMIE PRINCIPAL

If you like your early house music to be gay and new wavey like I do, the holy trinity of Your Love, Cold World and Bad Boy will kill you.

Some of this came out as Frankie Knuckle's Presents and is wrongly attributed to Knuckles.

And then of course:

Larry Heard/Mr. Fingers/Fingers, Inc.

This is an example of how some cultures take a form of music, use the popular brand name "house music" and commercialize it for profit. At best, this is acid-tripping rave music! There is no soul, no feeling, no vocals (repititious headaching samples) and nothing CLOSE to house music.

:D :D :D

i think the "tech" stuff is on the more miami-bass-influenced end

x-post...perfect example of what drives me fucking nuts about the NYC house scene. How can you go on and on and on about how open and wonderful the world of house is...then go off on how Cajmere is not house!

CZR's is actually my favorite, but the last half of the mix gets v. filterdisco-y which is a bit of a variation from pumpn the trax etc. That remix of "Chicago Southside" that Paul Johnson did is one of my favorite things.

I've seen Funk twice in SF recently. The first was at Blowup/Rickshaw and was completely unhinged/dionysian sweat drenched fun. Then we saw him with Assault at Mighty and I guess the novelty wore off/crowd was too soho/Funk was drunk cause it wasn't nearly as good.

But any night out that I don't hear "We are your friends" is a good one.

yours fondly, harshaw. (mrgn), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 22:10 (nineteen years ago)

This Soundtrack Will Make You Want to Party., November 12, 2000
By Luis Hernandez (New York, New York, USA) - See all my reviews

Simply one of the best soundtracks released in the last five years, the soundtrack to "Party Girl," contains many great club anthems and dance songs that will make you move all night long. Reflecting the film's central idea of club hopping and a street-smart young woman, the "Party Girl" soundtrack contains some of today's best artists all on one disc.
The film's opening song, "Mama Told Me Not To Come" by The Wolfgang Press sounds great, although it doesn't reflect the music played in New York's clubs. Chanelle's "I'll Keep Coming Back" is a fierce track featuring a very talented dive-in-the-making.

Other noteworthy songs include both "Big Apple Boogaloo" by Brooklyn Funk Essentials AND "Anyone Could Happen To Me" by Nation Of Abel which balance the club tracks with the other transitional music found throughout the film. The hip-hop classic "Peter Piper" by Run DMC is also included on this soundtrack, which gave me many memories of life in New York during the 1980's.

"Music Selector Is The Soul Reflector" by Deee-Lite features DJ Towa Tei's amazing trance-like sounds and Lady Miss Kier's haunting vocals, which blend into a perfect mix. And finally no club album can be complete without one of the dance world's great divas, Ultra Nate, singing the film's title track "Party Girl (Turn Me Loose)". Excellent as always, Ultra Nate's song caps this soundtrack.

My only disappointment on this soundtrack that some of the film's best tracks including "If You Believe-Believe in Me" by Chantay Savage (this was the song played in the scene were Mary learns the Dewey Decimal system and catwalks on the library tables at night), "In My House" (played during Mary's final party at the warehouse), and the techno groove played while the male dancers are dancing at Renee's club). I was looking forward to hear Chantay's fierce and vicious track, but was left disappointed. It is a very hard-to-find single.

The lines from the film heard throughout the album are amusing and an added bonus, and one must fast forward through all the blank space after the end of Ultra Nate's song to hear Mary's infamous "Dewey Decimal" speech. It is a classic!

Truly a soundtrack one must have in their collection, especially if you are a big dance enthusiast.

Great soundtrack but it's only gettng three stars, April 5, 2008
By Tim Lieder "Founder of Dybbuk Press" (New York, NY) - See all my reviews

Ok, as other reviewers have noted, the BEST song in the entire movie is not on this thing. That's the song that's playing when Parker Posey finally gets serious about learning the Dewey Decimal system as her roommate breaks through in the club.

The rest of the soundtrack is a fun mix of club and trance pieces including the title song and "I'll Be Coming Back" but without that really cool song, it's only a three star album. Comment | Permalink | Was this review helpful to you? (Report this)

The soundtrack is OK, but is MISSING the BEST song in the movie - the HOUSE MIX of CHANTAY SAVAGE's amazing Chicago-style house anthem IF YOU BELIEVE - produced by STEVE SILK HURLEY and REMIXED by E-SMOOVE - oh well, search out the 12" for the full 13-minute opus! oscar, Thursday, 31 July 2008 00:32 (seventeen years ago)

'bring down the walls'?

deej, Thursday, 31 July 2008 15:26 (seventeen years ago)

There's a song on the new Morgan Geist album Double Night Time called "Palace Life" that has a nice No Way Back reference/feel in the bassline.

But I'm a big fan of Jamie Principal's early stuff, minimal, synthy, new wavey, Your Love, Bad Boy, Cold World, Waiting On My Angel.

That and all the early Fingers, Inc/Mr. Fingers/Larry Heard/Robert Owens stuff...Bring Down the Walls, Never No More Lonely, Can You Feel It, Washing Machine, etc.

Those may be obvious suggestions, but there's a reason this stuff is known and grouped, I think they lack the piano-driven aspect of some early house, as well as the sonic overload of the early acid in favor of a more dark and minimal yet poppy feel.

Also, It's My Life by Da Posse.

i've been listening to jamie p pretty much non stop based on a rec you made a while ago dan. that's actually the sound that i've been searching for in alot of these early chicago house records. i posted in the jamie p thread a while back about some unreleased stuff of his on youtube, you may want to check it out.i tried listening to the later adonis stuff and i feel it lost alot of what i liked in those early records by him, too much screeching 303 for me.

i wouldn't say that adonis and virgo four sound similar (adonis definitely sounds similar to virgo, but that's because he was in the group). if anything, virgo four sounds a lot like (and fulfills the promise of) those unreleased jamie principle demos. it's slower than a lot of house. it's almost completely electronic, spacy sounding instrumentation, with little or no samples. a lot of emphasis on melody.

here are the jamie principle tracks. be sure to check out baby wants to ride for the extended ambient intro!!!

the ambient intro sounds like the beginning to Einstein on the Beach.

I love youtube these days, more then mp3 blogs, digging for vinyl, trading mixes, this is how I discover music!

dan selzer, Saturday, 9 August 2008 03:01 (seventeen years ago)

youtube is probably the best musical resource around. now if they would just increase the audio quality, i'd be set!
