the only thing i have to say really, cause i'm not good at picking targets, is that i see the 60s underground failing either by:
a) going mainstream and selling out... turning the peace generation into the war on terrors.
b) being unable to escape marginalized, underground status and organize a better future out of their recycled paper bags.
and so you get most undergroundy folks in that generation being a product of both those things. stuck somewhere in the middle. either grossly square with a total repudiation of their youthful idealism vs so fucking tin foil hat burnt that no one can take them seriously.
i guess i wonder, what can we learn from their fuck up?m.

Young & strong beautiful oneOne that we embraced so closeIs goneWas torn away
Let the youth of America mournInclude him in their prayersLet his image linger onRepeat it everywhere
With candles with flowersHe was one of oursOne of ours
Why don't you let him be? He's goneWe knowGive his mother & father peaceYour vulture's candorYour casual slanderWill murder his memoryHe's goneWe knowAnd it's nothing but a tragedy
Lay to rest your soul and bodyLay beside your nameLay to rest your rageYour hunger and amazing grace
With candles, with flowersYou were one of oursOne of ours
I saw cameras expose your lifeI heard rumors explode with liesI saw children with tearsCry and crowd around the sightOf where you had collapsed that dayWhere your last breath & wordHad been sighedWhere your heart had burstWhere you had died
I saw how they were lost in grievingAll half-believing you were goneThe loss and pain of itCrime and the shame of itYou were goneIt was such a nightmare raving, "how could we save himFrom himself?"
