was it plugged into your computer prior to the disappearance of the tracks? that's happened to mine several times, but mine is old and there is a known incompatibility with later versions of OSX which means I basically can never add songs again after the first go round on it :(

did you just update to the awful new itunes? I lost 10gigs of music (everything that was on the computer upon which the new itunes was installed), but it was still in the menu. Little exclamation marks everywhere.

Do you mean EARLIER VERSIONS? Anyway, got a ref on this?

No, I mean later versions, cap'n save-a-jobs, as in "certain versions later than the one that existed when the iPod version in question was manufactured." I have given you refs on this multiple times, on multiple threads, Jon. I figured you'd already solved your grumpy lack of jerk off dilemma by now ;_;

If it's not a software thing, there might be a problem with the hard drive on your iPod (that happened to me...other signs of this are decreased battery time, loading files onto your ipod with itunes taking a long time, randomly erasing/shutting off, etc.). If you want to check out the hard drive (and other iPod features), put it in diagnostic mode and run tests: http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/

It could have been a number of things. But I always take good care of it (never unplug without "ejecting" properly). I do have iTunes7 installed and as a matter of fact I tried to open it to load some movies a bit before this happened. I got an error message about not having Quicktime and it refused to open so I just used Winamp as usual.

I walked outside heading toward the subway and pressed shuffle but the iPod did nothing. My heart sank and then I navigated to Artists to find it empty. I laughed though because I knew it would happen one day.

"certain versions later than the one that existed when the iPod version in question was manufactured."

OR certain versions of the ipod that existed before the version of the software in question?
