this is my highschool: Westchester High School is notorious for being known as one of the places Stanley Tookie Williams, founder of the Crips gang, first went to for recruitment.

That's like saying elmo and I have mafia status for going to B\_/ddy Ci@nc1's high school!

roc u like a § (ex machina), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 21:48 (nineteen years ago)

I once had to prove my hood status to a fellow college freshman from "the city" giving me and some others attitude (we being white). I said "hey, I'm from the Oranges" and earned his respect. I just didn't specify which Orange, but it was close enough. I later learned he went to like Spence or some uppity NYC school.

it certainly felt like a mess, that was partly what endeared it too me so quickly, finding meaning in the entire range of things i don't initially find emotionally affecting (romance between sixty-somethings) and coming around to jokes i don't initially find hilarious (dalmatian mice) is preferable to rushmore which, when it came out, was just about a nerdy kid my exact age, and all jokes are laid out one-two-three to be laughed at the first time and then it's over. also i think many people are focusing too much on the beautiful funny wonderous tingly gleeful but somehow inferior first half of tenenbaums which is fantastic style exercise stuff but didn't make me openly weep with joy (no lie) like the second part.

HUNTA-V (vahid), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 01:22 (nineteen years ago)

i grew up a few blocks away from coney island and went to elementary and junior high school there -- this was way before all the redevelopment stuff when it was mostly housing projects and run-down shacks and junkies on the boardwalk, and way before the siren fest/general hipsterfication. the building i grew up in was sorta the "white people" low-ish income housing that was on the border of brighton beach and coney island.

and now i live a few blocks from USC, in "south l.a." (which used to be called "south central"). the neighborhood is called west adams, and i'm in the bullshit real estate designation of "north university park" (where there are some historic homes that the so-called urban pioneers are buying up). the city's really trying to make this area better, and it will be in the next 5-10 years, but right now it's not a very livable place. crime is a big problem, and there hasn't been a whole lot of commercial investment except for the usual fast-food/check-cashing crap. there is a starbucks, staffed by white kids, serving $4 coffee to white kids, but with all kinds of literature pinned to the corkboard about how magic johnson and his deep pockets are going to save the l.a. ghettos and starbucks is the catalyst.

i once spent half an afternoon GISing "al sharpton medallion", it's bizarre, what was once an omnipresent 80s media image has now somehow been purged from the record.

manute lol (sanskrit), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 02:09 (nineteen years ago)

I had a guy flash a pistol at me in traffic last year, after I honked when they stopped in the middle of the road for no reason. His girlfriend slapped him upside the head twice and sped off in another direction yelling at him.

Other than that, everything I can think of leans redneck rather than hood.
