so, i'm at the thrift store, cyrus is asleep in the car seat that i lugged inside, rufus is looking at toys, i scored all those good records(see november thread) and i see this book sitting there in a box. you know, one of those fancy book boxes that fancy art books come in. this one was plain black. great texture. so i take this book out and it is this super-shiny(like really really shiny - dazzling really) silver softback book that is huge and that has *1970* embossed on the cover. I start flipping thru it and i see the most awesome black & white art photos of various hippie chicks and college women and hippie dudes circa 1970 and women's lib poems and pictures of jesse jackson and alan ginsburg and a ginsburg poem and pictures of candlelight vigils and just generally great arty shots. 100's of them. so i look for the title on the title page and it is the 1970 Skidmore College yearbook! it's sooooooo swank. every school picture is an action shot -some full-page- of all the gals (women's college) and then just tons of other pictures of life at Skidmore, but all done in total art school style. you could totally put this out as an art book. anyway, i wish you could all see it. i'm gonna treasure it. maybe you can steal one from the library if you are ever in saratoga. it looks NOTHING like a yearbook. i've never seen anything like it.

that sounds so awesome. i scored a great set of glasses at ye olde thrift shoppe. there was also a needle hook clown that looked positively DERANGED that i debated getting but was finally talked out of due to possible health effects from a dubious yellow stain on the bottom of it.

we actually have a scanner, but god only knows how to use it. maybe maria does.

there were 1900 copies of this book made. so sayeth the book. someone at skidmore was teaching a helluva arty double exposure class. there are lots of those. lots of snow shots! saratoga gets chilly.

it looks like a double exposure of a contact sheet & a portrait to me. double exposure here meaning that the photo-paper was double exposed, not the film.

i also love how all their clothes are so great. it's totally affected my sense of style today. wearing old-timeyish round-collared shit, deep purple mohair sweater over top and i even put on this weird necklace i still have from when i was a kid that's a flat round piece of green resin with dried flowers inside - it ties on with a ribbon. so diggin it.

also, this reminds me:

the college i went to, North Park University, in Chicago, has an equally cool 1970 yearbook. it is without a doubt one of my top ten favorite books ever. i used to check it out of the library consitantly my four years there. it was very similar in style to the photos you have here. all of the underclassmen photos were group shots, 5-10 people at a time (and still done alphabetically). the freshmen ones have them all holding hands red-rover style. can you imagine what a pain in the ass it would be to schedule college students in 2006 for something like this? there was also a mime that kept appearing, a picture of the american flag flying upside down in front of the administration building in protest of the kent state shootings, and loads of rad hippie girls.

this thread reminds me that i have not yet accomplished the goal of tracking a copy down (i loved it so much that i couldn't bring myself to stealing the library's copy... i wanted future students to marvel at its beauty) and creating a page-by-page version available as a website for the world to marvel at.

after falling in love with it i decided "old yearbooks are my thing" but every single one i found afterwards paled in comparison. these photos definatly make the Skidmore College one look like it is of the same caliber.
