super mario 2 is dreamy, but so fucking hard!!!!!!!

HUNTA-V (vahid), Saturday, 18 November 2006 23:06 (nineteen years ago)

it is the only one to feature a burlesque show themed character select screen and weird victorian crown moulding on the bonus chance slot machine things

ath (ath), Sunday, 19 November 2006 00:38 (nineteen years ago)

I spent a small fortune playing this on one of those Playchoice 10 machines in my favourite bar in 1990. It feels like it ought to be easy.

Brian Emo (noodle vague), Sunday, 19 November 2006 00:47 (nineteen years ago)

early levels = easy
quicksand levels = pretty tough
ice levels = crazy

i am on the last level and it is nuts

songs and ballads of the bituminous miners (sanskrit), Sunday, 19 November 2006 00:58 (nineteen years ago)

Yes. The Ice Levels are evil beyond belief. Sometimes I tried them with Daisy, figuring more flight time = less slipping on the ground time, but I don't think I've ever got past them.

Brian Emo (noodle vague), Sunday, 19 November 2006 00:58 (nineteen years ago)

I find it easier than playing through mario 3 with no warps

roc u like a § (ex machina), Sunday, 19 November 2006 01:19 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, it's obv easier than sm3 or smw but i always hear people call it "the easy one" and i'm like WHO THE FUCK ARE THESE OTAKU THAT CALL THIS SHIT EASY?!?!?

i just died 50+ times trying to fight through the fucking birdo / birdo / hawk head combo at the end of 7-2 and i'm not even to fucking wart yet!!

HUNTA-V (vahid), Sunday, 19 November 2006 01:54 (nineteen years ago)

the last world is pretty tough, the rest isn't bad
like noodle said, using princess for the ice levels helps a lot

sleep (sleep), Sunday, 19 November 2006 02:14 (nineteen years ago)

i can't imagine trying to play this as anybody *but* princess, i have been getting through it mostly by floating around obstacles.

HUNTA-V (vahid), Sunday, 19 November 2006 02:34 (nineteen years ago)

I find the floating annoying tho, like it's harder to judge the length of a float than it is to judge the length of Mario's jump.

Why the hell would anybody play that Mushroom kid?

My Life in the Ghost of Bush (noodle vague), Sunday, 19 November 2006 02:44 (nineteen years ago)

it's the only of the 3 I KNOW i've beat (I may have beat the third once, never could get past 8-2 or abouts on 1).

Zwan (miccio), Sunday, 19 November 2006 06:17 (nineteen years ago)

Why the hell would anybody play that Mushroom kid?

He is a fast mutha fucka.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 19 November 2006 07:09 (nineteen years ago)

i think the hardest to play with is luigi.

i don't understand what you mean about "the length of a float" - you can just let go if you want to drop! and if you mean how long it lasts, about 2 seconds, right?

i guess it is what you are used to. i hadn't played this for, like, 12 years. back then i always played the princess, and sure enough, she was the only character i felt comfortable playing!

HUNTA-V (vahid), Sunday, 19 November 2006 07:12 (nineteen years ago)

i finally beat it a few hours ago, but damn, that was harder than castlevania.

what's next - gradius or metroid?

HUNTA-V (vahid), Sunday, 19 November 2006 07:13 (nineteen years ago)

ninja gaiden

am0n (am0n), Sunday, 19 November 2006 07:47 (nineteen years ago)

p.s. sm2 is cake next to castlevania

am0n (am0n), Sunday, 19 November 2006 07:49 (nineteen years ago)

^^^^ OTM

also what is this about super mario world being easier than super mario bros 2? I beat smw like eighty times as a kid and sm2 approx NEVER.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Sunday, 19 November 2006 15:57 (nineteen years ago)

smb2 fans should try the gba version for laughs, it's like some nintendo lackey doodled all over it

a.b. (alanbanana), Sunday, 19 November 2006 16:39 (nineteen years ago)

Dude, SMW is easier because you have saves and the ability to play through at your own pace. Even the save gave feature in SM All Stars makes it way easier. Mario 3 on All Stars = only way to play.

Alan, explain?!!?

roc u like a § (ex machina), Sunday, 19 November 2006 17:46 (nineteen years ago)

lol easier should have been harder in that last post I made. I am mildly retaarded.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Sunday, 19 November 2006 17:53 (nineteen years ago)

Alan, explain?!!?
well in the first stage instead of falling down, there are clouds you can walk on, and then you see the first shyguy but it's HUGE, and it takes forever to pull up, then you get to the bottom and it looks like you can't reach the platform the door is on, but when you step on one of the hills this even bigger vegetable-thing pushes the hill up. later in 1-1 at the waterfall cave there's a 1-up in a bubble that you need to hit 3 times to pop, but there's only 2 things you can throw so you can't get it. there's supersized stuff in every stage and if you get a big pow block, it bounces along the floor killing everything. there are extra pots that make you go "wtf that wasn't there before" if you're familiar with the original, and most of them contain this big colorful wheel thing that serves no purpose i can tell. you can pull birdo's bow off but not with the princess (???). it also includes ROBOBIRDO as a boss.

a.b. (alanbanana), Sunday, 19 November 2006 18:48 (nineteen years ago)

i think how "easy" super mario 2 is sort of depends on your luck in the slot machine game. there are some stages where you can get 10 coins and if you hit the triple cherries twice you suddenly have like 12 lives to waste.

good point on the saves in super mario world!

HUNTA-V (vahid), Sunday, 19 November 2006 21:35 (nineteen years ago)

what's a good gba emulator for mac? is there a gba chipset for macmame?

HUNTA-V (vahid), Sunday, 19 November 2006 21:37 (nineteen years ago)

Mame doesn't do consoles (with the exception of some specialized home consoles and probably like NeoGeo?) or handhelds. DUH

roc u like a § (ex machina), Sunday, 19 November 2006 22:27 (nineteen years ago)

ok but you didn't answer the first question. DUH

HUNTA-V (vahid), Monday, 20 November 2006 03:05 (nineteen years ago)

it does neogeo real nice!

DOCTOR METH KING (TOMBOT), Monday, 20 November 2006 15:43 (nineteen years ago)

I remember one time I had stockpiled like 30 lives and needed to quit playing, so I was just jumping into every hole I could find, and WTF there was this one (maybe level 4? don't remember) with a waterfall behind it and TO MY SURPRISE there was a warp at the bottom, rather than death.

I remember playing this big fat monster guy in level 7 somewhere and was listening to Amon Tobin Permutation and track 5 or 6 had all these dinging/pinging noises and it totally matched up with the game, I almost died laughing.

stoked for the madness (nickalicious), Monday, 20 November 2006 16:28 (nineteen years ago)

in SM2 wasn't there some pause-button trick where you could pwn the slot machine every time

dmr (Renard), Monday, 20 November 2006 17:26 (nineteen years ago)

ok the game boy advance version is fucking irresistible! i'm going to play this shit all the way through! even sillier and more retarded than the original! giant shyguys! multiple hit combos! hi-res music!

one thing is that it's super easy to get extra lives. on the first level you can go back to where those six ninjis are jumping around in the cave and hit them w/ a giant radish again and again and get a one-up each time. crazy easy.

also, what's up w/ the strobing lights in the caves? is that some sort of weird behavior that has to do w/ the emulator i'm using? i'm using "boycott".

HUNTA-V (vahid), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 02:44 (nineteen years ago)

I find world 8 of the original smb harder than the whole of smb2, although I may be retarded. Smb3 seems like it was made for me, as I find the whole thing just-the-right-level-of-challenging before I get too frutrated to bail out of it.
