I tested these out, they're pretty glitchy. I gave them a C+ rating:

haha, not 20 minutes ago i saw a girl with a bluetooth in her ear and did a wtf-is-that doubletake. if you were paying attention, you'd know just how stone age i (still) am in the phone dept.

(but yes, I'll dl something from the NY Review of Books or something and read it on the blackberry on the train here and there)

I figured that most of you were somehow making posts on here from your bluetooth headset.

destroy: airport bluetooth people. I HATE YOU SO MUCH!!

explain? how are these different from normal blueouchbags

roc u like a § (ex machina), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 20:00 (nineteen years ago)

BECAUSE I CAN'T LEAVE! they are all over! and usually not people talking about anything important, just people calling their families to say 'yep, i'm just sitting here in the airport!' thanks for the update, douchebag!
even worse: people eating airport fast food AND talking on headsets.
why do people feel the need to eat so much in airports? this bothers me. the peanuts aren't enough and they can't wait the 4 hours til they get wherever they're going? it's always such a big production, too.
end rant.

zombierza (tehresa), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 20:04 (nineteen years ago)

But is there something that makes them markedly worse than normal cell phone users in the airport.

in terms of awfulness, is this true? if so why?:

(bluetooth headset in airport) - (cell phone user in airport) > (bluetooth headset on street) - (cell phone on street)

roc u like a § (ex machina), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 20:10 (nineteen years ago)

the only way i can see these things coming in useful is if you're driving.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 20:11 (nineteen years ago)

i think headsets are worse because people get the "I"M REALLY IMPORTANT" game going and talk somewhat louder. also, at least with a cell phone, the voice is directed (somewhat) into the phone and not other people's immediate space (though it is very easy to invade someone's space while holding the phone and talking, too). but honestly, it's just that they're more obvious and annoying these days. before bluetooth headsets were a big thing, i bitched about people on regular cell phones in the airport. now it's just upped a level.

zombierza (tehresa), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 20:15 (nineteen years ago)

right, but are they proportionally more annoying or disproportionately more annoying an airport?

roc u like a § (ex machina), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 20:20 (nineteen years ago)

did you read answer? yes, more annoying because of louder, freer talking.

zombierza (tehresa), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 20:22 (nineteen years ago)

worse at airport because people have time on their hands and can't just read a damn book for a few minutes so they have to show everyone how cool they are with their toys. walking down the street, you're not forced to listen to someone's entire conversation from 1 foot away for 20 minutes at a time.

zombierza (tehresa), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 20:23 (nineteen years ago)

worse because theres enough lack of responsible public behavior in general

and they act like it isnt GDDMND insane to walk around like some any ole place it the gddmnd starship enterprise.

and they walk around like spaztic, mildy unsure of what they are doing while being quite sure of what they're doing

and, since they arent holding a phone, have no problem, engaging in a variety of things you should be doing while attending to a conversation elsewhere

and, since they dont have to actually be on the phone, they make useless public calls more often than people would that have to hold the phone

and...

hell, im almost willing to use momus' horsepoop methodology to demand they are banned (unless yr alone in yr own house or car...alone being an important qualification).

bb (bbrz), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 20:30 (nineteen years ago)

my reading comprehension?

zombierza (tehresa), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 20:42 (nineteen years ago)

my two neighbors here both have headsets...and they wonder why im constantly turning up the noisey, hippy horsepoop on my computer..they act like theyre the only people here...

bb (bbrz), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 20:45 (nineteen years ago)

ben, get one of those bluetooth denial utils

roc u like a § (ex machina), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 20:48 (nineteen years ago)

You make a good point re: more frequent and casual use because they aren't actually holding a phone the old fashioned way.

I think the idea behind the bluetooth headset was to make things easier on those who need to use their hands (think keyboard or steering wheel, even bike handlebar) while talking on the phone. This convenience is being abused daily by people deciding they need to use their hands to pay for a venti mocha latte at Starbucks (u should never be on the phone at the cash register imo) or play PDA Sudoku in the airport. Unscrupulous IDIOTS!

turbogirlwc8ko3.jpg (blastocyst), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 21:00 (nineteen years ago)

...and now that I think of it, these trends are giving way to a larger, shittier trend that is humans further integrating phone use into every other mundane thing they do. I mean OK, maybe you're a businessman and you need to be on the phone a lot, but most of us should not be using the phone during 90% of any given daily activity.

I, for one, take care of personal calls during long trips to the toilet

as long as you're not fussing with the phone (address book) using a hands free in a car/bike is fine. headset ... I'm undecided

roc u like a § (ex machina), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 21:13 (nineteen years ago)

i was on the phone with someone ordering a coffee recently. i knew where they were and almost hung up so not to be assisting in that poor behavior.

(they have chorded headsets, jon...but its still the same...they forget they're on the phone xpost)

That's too bad

roc u like a § (ex machina), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 21:18 (nineteen years ago)

I'm tempted to get my dad a fucking headset because he always uses the fucking speaker phone on his phone in the car and it sounds like WOOOSH OR I don't know my Mom is listening

roc u like a § (ex machina), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 21:18 (nineteen years ago)

Otto may be right...but everyone uses phone in car (though I prefer loud music to chit chat)

I think some people are capable of using cellphone while driving, some aren't. Also: you cannot smoke a cigarette and talk on the phone while driving.

turbogirlwc8ko3.jpg (blastocyst), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 21:22 (nineteen years ago)

I work with a guy who sits at his desk all day with his bluetooth on. Everytime I have something to say to him, I have to ask, "Are you on the phone?"

And yeah, death to those who can't pause a conversation for five seconds to interact with the cashier.

I would have a temptation to wear one to a realty's open house. Following the agent around going "Oh, honey. YOu should see this recessed ceiling..."

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 21:22 (nineteen years ago)

what if you're using a headset xpost

roc u like a § (ex machina), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 21:23 (nineteen years ago)

dam what a conundrum.......

p.s. i've never used the headset/bluetooth things; don't you still need to physically interact with the phone? or is it all voice command shit?

turbogirlwc8ko3.jpg (blastocyst), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 21:28 (nineteen years ago)

Everytime I have something to say to him, I have to ask, "Are you on the phone?"

Here we point the mic dongle straight up in the air when not on the phone so we don't have to keep asking each other. I understand this won't work with Bluetoothies though.

I think I saw a person wearing a bluetooth headset today. I was probably looking at him with my mouth open cause I don't think I've ever seen a person using this before.

I'm clearly stupid cause I can't even get email working on my cellphone. :-( I emailed the damn provider (who's also my internet/email provider) who asked me who my email provider is. hah.
