Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 19:09 (nineteen years ago)

ha, the other morning i was reading an interview with some guy that did street calls and the like in Studs Terkle's They all Sang. The dude gets all worked up and insists that there was another guy that was in the "americas" before lief erickson...hillarity, mostly in the guys delivery...

this was about 4:15 am on monday, so my memory's a bit cloudy.

this is merely tangentially related.

but i hope you all have a damned decent holiday.

FACT:

in JAPAN, clever marketers have firmly convinced the country's population that all Americans eat KFC on Xmas, and thus, you (Japanese) should do so too. this humors me to no end. caveat: KFC in Japan is actually edible.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 19:52 (nineteen years ago)

that makes me happy.

There's also a very funny story about Randy Bass playing for the Hanshin (Osaka) Tigers baseball club, and because he had a goatee (and the fact that all non-asian people look alike* to the typical Japanese person), the rowdy Kansai people took a statue of Col. Sanders and threw it into the Yado river with all the revellers who are custom to do such a thing after winning the Japan Series.

Similar to the "One Ring", the statue fell to the bottom of the Yado and laid there for many years, and it was said that the Hanshin Tigers lack of success was due to the Colonel's Curse! No shit, let me try to google this and see if it's in English.

The Christmas Cake phenomenon in Japan is also classic, Steve! Random holiday fact: In China, Pizza Hut is a really popular Valentine's Day spot to take your date out to dinner!
