jon, next time you are around we could check it out. it has a bunch of office space, filled mainly by design professionals. there's a mini recording studio, antique furniture store, and marc's renting space there for his network/security contract biz. there's also gonna be a cafe & some retail space. fuckn rad.

you know...i have a hard time telling the differnece between coffee served in rhode island and coffeemilk...what the hell is with you people and milk?!? its not even a dairy state! lay off a bit and let me taste the beans for the love of christ.

bb (bbrz), Friday, 26 January 2007 21:13 (eighteen years ago)

Actually, comparing RI Dunks to NYC dunks, RI generally has less milk product if you give same instructions

UART variations (ex machina), Friday, 26 January 2007 21:15 (eighteen years ago)

weirdness i learned after moving to the midwest. if you order a "large regular" at a boston dunkin donuts you get a lot of cream and sugar. if you order a "large regular" in chicago they ask if you want cream and/or sugar. if you order a "large, boston" you get a large regular. it took me almost 6 years to find this out.

chicago kevin (chicago kevin), Friday, 26 January 2007 21:28 (eighteen years ago)

my advice is to ask for the cream and sugar u want

Every state has something its Rotary Club can boast of
Some product that the state produces the most of
Rhode Island is little, but oh my
It has a product anyone would buy

Copper comes from Arizona
Peaches come from Georgia
Lobsters come from Maine
The wheat fields are the sweet fields of Nebraska
And Kansas gets bonanzas from the grain

Ol' whiskey comes from ol' Kentucky
Ain't the country lucky?
New Jersey gives us glue
And you - you come from Rhode Island
And little ol' Rhode Island is famous for you

Cotton comes from Louisiana
Gophers from Montana
And spuds from Idaho
They plow land in the cow land of Missouri
Where most beef meant for roast beef seems to grow

Grand canyons come from Colorado
Gold comes from Nevada
Divorces also do
And you - you come from Rhode Island
And little ol' Rhode Island is famous for you

Pencils come from Pennsylvania
Vests from (V)est Virginia
Tents from (Tent)essee
They know mink where they grow mink in Wyomin(k)
A camp chair in New Hamp(chair) - That's for me

Minnows come from Minn(o)sota
Coats come from Dakota
But why should you be blue?
For you - you come from Rhode Island
And little ol' Rhode Island is famous for you

whatever happened to the westerlies?

chicago kevin (chicago kevin), Sunday, 28 January 2007 21:11 (eighteen years ago)

the summers i was 16-19 i worked at a deli/café in southern rhode island. my shady low-level mafioso boss hired me to do all sorts of weird tasks including but not limited to:

a) drive him to new jersey (leaving at 4am) so he could pick up unmarked black cadillacs from an otherwise empty field. drive him back and -- if asked -- tell everybody i'd been mowing his lawn.

b) clean out a basically-trashed "abandoned" house; throw out the belongings of the current tenants, destroy the letters I found under the bed (mostly from a kid to his father, father in jail. kid lied desperately about how successfully he was taking care of his mother).

c) drive trays of bagels and coffee to the local police headquarters, along with these supremely sycophantic messages 'for the great work you do keeping us safe and protected, with love and trust in our mother and the holy son jesus'

d) paint and repaint a mural of a french country villa on the 8x16 wall of a closed-down building 'soon to be a restaurant' and later burned to the ground. presumably because the 'artist' the boss had hired was likely a favorite call-girl, and he had to show his wife the 'work' she was doing.

e) shred scads of unmarked manila envelopes.

But my paychecks started bouncing. Boss threatened to 'break me' if I came on the property. He accused me of extortion, and called two of his buddies to lead me off the premesis. Didn't get fired; just got chased away. Boss's dad took $70.00 from the register and threw them in my face, told me I better "beat it good and quick or I'll get good and quickly beaten."

indian rope trick (bean), Sunday, 28 January 2007 22:30 (eighteen years ago)

The beaches are so much better than Southeastern Connecticut where I grew up. Also, the package stores didn't card you as much. Well, back in the late 70s.

Hi, Remy! That sounds like a perfect teenage summer job! Until you get to the last paragraph.

I need to talk to you about elementary education, RI, public vs. private, stuff like that. I went to the HR people at the Providence School District and they said they weren't hiring anyone with a plain old elementary credential, just Special Ed and Bilingual credentials. Bummer. There must be some way around this. Anyway, e-mail me! I hear you're doing well.

Lupo's is still open - it moved across the street to where The Strand was.

http://www.lupos.com/

Edward III (edward iii), Monday, 29 January 2007 17:42 (eighteen years ago)

the "new" strand hosts concerts under the "Lupo's Heartbreak Hotel" promotional brand == THAT'S NOT LUPO'S, GENIUS

elmo argonaut (allocryptic), Monday, 29 January 2007 17:45 (eighteen years ago)

Lupo's @ the Strand is pretty awful as a venue! Elevated dance platforms make for really shitty sight lines! also, terrible acoustics!

elmo argonaut (allocryptic), Monday, 29 January 2007 17:49 (eighteen years ago)

Lupo's! I saw Fugazi & The Ex / Stereolab & SY there! Fuckers!

the art of pretend non-lawyering. (tehresa), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 00:37 (eighteen years ago)

the actual site of the former lupo's (along with the building that housed it) is currently being developed into luxury lofts by cornish associates lp.

i try not to be too idealistic "saving cities" about the economic patterns that cause gentrification, but it seems really backwards for Providence to pay lip service to the arts on one hand while sacrificing, on the other hand, one of its better (i.e. most famous, largest capacity) music venues for its real estate value.
