hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 2 February 2007 16:11 (eighteen years ago)

I posit the notion that Blues Control should be headlining and playing 90 min sets, dog

sexyDancer (sexyDancer), Friday, 2 February 2007 16:14 (eighteen years ago)

OTM. Who is this "Titan"?

be home by 11 (orion), Friday, 2 February 2007 16:18 (eighteen years ago)

titan is my friend josh's band, super progtastic goodness, and good friends with blues control, you weirdos.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 2 February 2007 16:20 (eighteen years ago)

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 2 February 2007 16:20 (eighteen years ago)

i've only seen titan twice, never seen white hills, and blues control are fucking fantastic and i could watch them every single day.

i still have never seen your band cutty. now i guess i don't need to.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 2 February 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

i guess we'd have to play with blues control to get you to see us

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 2 February 2007 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

might have to, yeah. or maybe get a record deal or something.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 2 February 2007 16:24 (eighteen years ago)

1/31/07 NEW SIGNING ALERT! So who needs guitars anyway? Make this our third signing where the guitar guitar, not the bass guitar, is well, less than prominent if existant. Read what you want into that, but technically, it's still the year of the dog and we're still partying! And here to keep it going, meet Holy Hail! We'll be releasing a VINYL single this spring - and all the tracks will be available for digital download. Read more here.

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 2 February 2007 16:25 (eighteen years ago)

hey hey Blues Control play with everybody
everybody chill

sexyDancer (sexyDancer), Friday, 2 February 2007 16:25 (eighteen years ago)

good news cutty.

yes, this thread is for everybody to post shows they're going to. it's not for fighting over dumb shit because cutty's having his period or something.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 2 February 2007 16:26 (eighteen years ago)

i asked a simple question

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 2 February 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

BRO CONTROL

sexyDancer (sexyDancer), Friday, 2 February 2007 16:28 (eighteen years ago)

and i answered!

anyway you guys playing any shows this month, cutty? post them.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 2 February 2007 16:28 (eighteen years ago)

we are playing many times this month

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 2 February 2007 16:29 (eighteen years ago)

which is rare

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 2 February 2007 16:29 (eighteen years ago)

we try not to play as much as blues control

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 2 February 2007 16:29 (eighteen years ago)

sexyDancer (sexyDancer), Friday, 2 February 2007 16:31 (eighteen years ago)

i have never seen these people before:

Adem
Devendra Banhart
Vashti Bunyan
Cibelle
CocoRosie
Vetiver

but apparently i'm seeing them all tonight.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 2 February 2007 16:32 (eighteen years ago)

adem is great

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 2 February 2007 16:33 (eighteen years ago)

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 2 February 2007 16:38 (eighteen years ago)

let me knob

sexyDancer (sexyDancer), Friday, 2 February 2007 16:40 (eighteen years ago)

oh, you mean "let me know." i am confused by all this fancy young un' internet jargon.

i am not going to southpaw for that, sorry.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 2 February 2007 16:40 (eighteen years ago)

I'm going to be there tonight as well. I've seen Vetiver, Andy ex-Tussle doing new-folk/indie songwriter stuff w/ Devendra on back-up vox, I liked it a lot.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 2 February 2007 16:41 (eighteen years ago)

andy ex-raymond brake

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 2 February 2007 16:41 (eighteen years ago)

I didn't mean you'd wanna see Vashti Bunyan and Vetiver twice (not prog enough).

I'll be at gay pop thing at Tonic tnite I spose: Chris Garneau / The Ballet.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 2 February 2007 16:49 (eighteen years ago)

cibelle is awesome. just ask steve shasta!
adem is ok but i skipped his show at the pub...
i don't know if i've ever heard devendra except the "london london" cover he and cibelle did!

he smells something else. he don't smell honey and pears. (tehresa), Friday, 2 February 2007 23:48 (eighteen years ago)

i think hippies smell funny

dan bunnybrain (dan bunnybrain), Saturday, 3 February 2007 03:52 (eighteen years ago)

grbchv! (skowly), Saturday, 3 February 2007 03:53 (eighteen years ago)

grbchv! (skowly), Saturday, 3 February 2007 03:53 (eighteen years ago)

i'm not yur bro.

dan bunnybrain (dan bunnybrain), Saturday, 3 February 2007 03:59 (eighteen years ago)

also going to devendra tonight at carnegie hall but hey that's work.

hey! I was there, first show I've been to in too long. thought it was good-to-great, but then I'm no longer the discerning critic.

everybody took turns accompanying and harmonizing w/each other, lots of spacey and surprisingly strong arrangments. My wife really liked Adem, I was into Vashti, we both dug the bookending sets by CocoRosie and Devendra. encore = the whole cast covering Moondog.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Saturday, 3 February 2007 12:52 (eighteen years ago)

sounds nice. probably a good place to see all that too.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 3 February 2007 14:25 (eighteen years ago)

diw magazine ripped me off

jimbo (electricsound), Saturday, 3 February 2007 14:26 (eighteen years ago)

I loved Adem's first song, sort of a white boy hippy version of Pharoah Sanders circa Karma, but I hated his other songs. CocoRosie I alternately enjoyed and despised, Vetiver and Devendra were great, as was Vashti. I was way up in nosebleed balcony, but it sounded really wonderful and definitely felt special to hear that stuff. It was also nice to see Devendra's dropped the Tyrannasaurus Rex vocals, and he did a great tropicalia type song, and ended up really rocking. And Vetiver is straight up on the Townes Van Zandt Gram Parsons tip. Last time I saw Vetiver it was just Andy and Devendra at Rare...they've come a long way.

Meanwhile Kevin from Currituck County played guitar on many tracks, and Hurdy Gurdy? on one, and sang on Moondog. Even money the moondog cover was his idea or Byrnes. I still have a CD that Kevin gave me years ago of unreleased stuff, some of which I think has come out since, and it has some of my favorite songs of the last few years...but I guess he's been too busy touring with Joanna Newsome and playing at Carnegie Hall to work on his solo career.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 3 February 2007 17:50 (eighteen years ago)

among dudes (used loosely) my age (also), i think vetiver are the first good *straightahead* band of that ilk.
i like something like skygreen leopards a lot, but they certainly stray a bit and aren't really what i am referring to.
vetiver just make me happy that the days of like brian jonestown massacre or some shit are pretty much over. that was a rough period, particularly if you enjoyed the original influences, you know?

noizem duke (noize duke), Saturday, 3 February 2007 20:27 (eighteen years ago)

i'm no expert on the stuff, but as far as the ilk is concerned, both vetiver and espers put out two records last year that really hit me the right way. they were both so solid. i would put them on a shelf with tower recordings folk scene if i had such a shelf. and it's not like i don't appreciate the shaggier/diy/improv elements of said ilk...okay, maybe i don't. i dunno. they were just good records. lovely really.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 3 February 2007 20:35 (eighteen years ago)

yeah isnt that dude otto in both? busy dude.
i think there is a difference, the tower/ wooden/ etc. aren't what i thought of when i saw vetiver. this is more a formalist thing. almost more commercial, in a good sense, if thats possible. you know there just these strings of westcoast jokers for so long, and i thought heres another one, and then they were really good actually.

noizem duke (noize duke), Saturday, 3 February 2007 20:43 (eighteen years ago)

otto was pictured twice in that horrid times freek fok piece..thts how bizzy he is...i cant love getting stoned and playin vetiver loud more..they r really nice people as well, and give it a vibe much needed..they love music so much.but yeah commercial in a way that wont sell that many hondas but enuff to keeep it going

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/160/378683226_e7b59eabe8_o.jpg

dan bunnybrain (dan bunnybrain), Saturday, 3 February 2007 21:29 (eighteen years ago)

Is Otto the guy from Espers? Most of those people pictured above were on stage last night...at least I think, they were all about the size of tiny insects from where I was sitting, I could only just make out facial hair and the occasional hat.

Vetiver started more folky singer/songwriter, but last night was full on classic country rock with immaculate playing/performing. You can tell all these guys have been touring their asses of...it started to feel like some old version of the Byrds or the Band or something. I'd only gotten a sense of Devendras direction from a video I saw on NY noise w/ a full band feat. Andy from Vetiver and the song was actual ROCK, I only knew the first few albums worth of Tyrannasaurus Rex whimsey. Fact is, he's a great songwriter and they both pull it off better then any other 70s rock style band I've heard/seen in the last few years, which, admittedly, isn't many (there are a lot, I just don't get out much).

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 3 February 2007 21:45 (eighteen years ago)

otto's the dude from espers, yeah.

i was really impressed with vetiver too, i think they were the nice surprise of the night. but ultimately it belonged to vashti, she so fucking owns it's not even funny. and she smiled at me backstage, which was real cute.

hstencil (hstencil), Saturday, 3 February 2007 21:49 (eighteen years ago)

adem is great

awwwww, thenks!

Rebel.yell.For.Internet.cakes (nordicskilla), Saturday, 3 February 2007 21:57 (eighteen years ago)

I have to give Espers more of a try...I have 2 records and they're beautiful but the songs didn't grab me. I saw the girl and Kevin sitting outside of the Aa house on Wyckoff performing some old song, like Bert Jansch or a standard, folky song about going off to fight as a knight or something.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 3 February 2007 22:10 (eighteen years ago)

Otto used to live in Rochester and sold me Magma and Godz rekkids

UART variations (ex machina), Saturday, 3 February 2007 22:17 (eighteen years ago)

oh that otto!

he smells something else. he don't smell honey and pears. (tehresa), Saturday, 3 February 2007 22:27 (eighteen years ago)

MORE GAY ITALIAN SHIT

sexyDancer (sexyDancer), Friday, 9 February 2007 16:02 (eighteen years ago)

i saw lindstrom last night, he played lots of feedelity stuff and then some things i didnt recognize. I had a great time, but definitely got 4 hours of sleep last night and woke up drunk, then threw up in a trash can on michigan avenue across from the art institute this morning on my way to work.

deej.. (deej..), Friday, 9 February 2007 16:07 (eighteen years ago)

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 9 February 2007 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

dmr (Renard), Friday, 9 February 2007 16:12 (eighteen years ago)

mayb we can Derby at the Slope Kentucky bar if yr too bedragged to have a party this year, stenc.

Laurel, did yr friend get you a Vetiver ticket?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 9 February 2007 19:49 (eighteen years ago)

fuck no i'm not going to no bar for derby - you ask this every year morbs and the answer is no. spending derby at a bar is fucking lame.

i'm actually hoping i can throw together some sort of band party action.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 9 February 2007 20:28 (eighteen years ago)

SORRY AS ALWAYS.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 9 February 2007 20:30 (eighteen years ago)

spending derby at a bar is fucking lame.

last year i was at the bottle for the derby, it wasn't open but there were maybe 25 of us sitting around drinking and smoking and gambling and playing pool. it was fun. i lost like a hundred dollars. that night i had a first date with a really awesome girl (took her to see tunnel of love at sub-t, not a wise choice) and got really fucked up on juleps and gin and tonic and schlitz. it was a great weekend, i'm looking forward to it this year.

chicago kevin (chicago kevin), Friday, 9 February 2007 20:41 (eighteen years ago)

yeah fuck a bar, go to an off-track! ;-)

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Friday, 9 February 2007 20:43 (eighteen years ago)

Don't nuke hstencil's paradigm from morbid. BAND PARTY ACTION > ANY BAR

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 9 February 2007 20:43 (eighteen years ago)

(Shasta, said bar in Brooklyn is in fact across the street from an OTB)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 9 February 2007 20:44 (eighteen years ago)

the gambling is more spirited away from the otb though. plus the air isn't ripe with that gnarly mixture of stale cigarettes and desperation from degenerate gamblers.

i want to go to the track now.

chicago kevin (chicago kevin), Friday, 9 February 2007 20:45 (eighteen years ago)

sorry morbs but mint juleps, cornbread, cole slaw and derby pie served by me >>>>>> any fucking dumb bar ever. if my bands are there, then even better.

you seriously ask about this every fucking year and i always say no. do you have asperger's or something?

closed bar doesn't count, kevin.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 9 February 2007 20:55 (eighteen years ago)

he has Boxcar syndrome, I think, stencil.

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Friday, 9 February 2007 20:56 (eighteen years ago)

Morbs, nope. I'm not sure I'd like Vashti, anyway...? He described her to me and I think it's a no-go (tho it would have been nice to see old friends). Are you still going?

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 9 February 2007 20:57 (eighteen years ago)

dude, laurel, vashti bunyan rules! i'm not sure what kind of music you like, but if you don't like vashti, you might not like music.*

*rockcrit hyperbole

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 9 February 2007 21:00 (eighteen years ago)

Laurel only likes Scottish indie rock

Charmmy Kitty's Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn (ex machina), Friday, 9 February 2007 21:06 (eighteen years ago)

tell me more about this derby pie you speak of

the kwisatz bacharach (sanskrit), Friday, 9 February 2007 21:08 (eighteen years ago)

english, scottish, wut's the diff?

Despite the failure of her album at the time, her influence over a new generation of folk artists, such as Devendra Banhart and Joanna Newsom, kept her music alive. In 2000, Just Another Diamond Day was given a re-release on CD (with bonus tracks). In 2001 Banhart wrote to her asking for her advice on whether to continue with music to which she replied, beginning her connection with many of the contemporary performers who cite her work. In 2002 she was invited by Piano Magic musician Glen Johnson to sing guest vocals on his song "Crown of the Lost", her first recording in over 30 years. Since then she has appeared on releases by Devendra Banhart and Animal Collective and in 2005 she recorded and released her second album, Lookaftering, some 35 years after her first. The album was produced by composer Max Richter and featured many of her contemporary followers including Banhart, Joanna Newsom, Adem, Kevin Barker of Currituck Co, Otto Hauser of Espers and Adam Pierce of Mice Parade. It was well received by critics and fans alike.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 9 February 2007 21:09 (eighteen years ago)

I never was going, Laurel. Dithering about ticket purchasing until it's too late is now my best protection from the experience of show-going, which I wind up being disappointed by 90% of the time now.

I keep fergettin, stenc, that one of your core principles in life is where to watch a horse race.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 9 February 2007 21:09 (eighteen years ago)

mike: http://www.derbypie.com

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 9 February 2007 21:09 (eighteen years ago)

i think vashti lived in edinburgh for a while too? something like that.

morbs, i like to entertain on one particular day out of the year. it's not hard to figure out.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 9 February 2007 21:12 (eighteen years ago)

Shit, I can't stand Newsome. Better this way.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 9 February 2007 21:17 (eighteen years ago)

they don't really have anything in common other than being babes. vashti's voice is much better/stronger, imo.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 9 February 2007 21:19 (eighteen years ago)

Ah well, it's a moot point!

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 9 February 2007 21:20 (eighteen years ago)

k, I just thought with all of the BBML runnin around you'd bag the party.

Yeah, V Bunyan may not be responsible for her followers any more than Jesus is.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 9 February 2007 21:20 (eighteen years ago)

she is srsly living legend of british folk, and the chance to see her is kind of amazing. it really struck me last week that i never ever thought i'd get to hear "just another diamond day" performed live, and i'm an idiot for passing on her bowery ballroom show from last year.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 9 February 2007 21:22 (eighteen years ago)

ps next week:

sunday: sightings at tonic
monday: the sb at cakeshop
