I don't think I've ever heard Heavy Vegetable. I remember not being able to get into the one Thingy album I heard. Never heard Rob Crow's solo stuff. I do like Pinback and Optiganally Yours, though.

A. Lingbert (A. Lingbert), Friday, 9 February 2007 02:29 (seventeen years ago) link

Optiganally yours is great, haven't payed that much attention to the rest. Pinback always scares me because it sounds like a nu-metal or emo name to me, even though I know that isn't the case.

I still live in San Diego.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 9 February 2007 05:22 (seventeen years ago) link

i interviewed rob crow for my high school newspaper after "aqua kitty" came out. we watched a jackie chan movie in his apartment and he said he wanted to write a song about jackie. later at a show he dedicated an early version of "henry mancini goes surfing" to me.

i asked him which bands he liked, he said "tortoise, slint, melvins, jesus lizard" ... it was the first time i'd ever heard of tortoise + slint ... i said i had recently bought "houdini" and he was down with that. i didn't like jesus lizard at the time.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 9 February 2007 05:48 (seventeen years ago) link

rice was a little bit before my time and i got into that whole scene sort of peripherally - i was more into metal / industrial stuff in HS and picked up on it through crash worship and clickitat and i didn't really understand the humor or anything the way people who got into scene stuff via jawbreaker did.

in retrospect the joke is fucking funny, though

clickitat brings back weird memories for me :(

I saw Mario Rubalcaba skateboarding on some Nickelodeon Sports upper-cable channel two years ago. It was footage from the early 90's and I wanna say he was wearing a Thrasher tee.

so what they did for instagram is just split it into the four quarters so that you swipe through one portrait at a time (upper left → upper right → lower left → lower right)

my hope was that if there’s a flash of recognition from the first two (upper) portraits you can credibly say “you were there” (re: san diego 90s post hc scene)

eleven months pass...

I joined several elderly members of my family for supper at North Park's world-famous Chicken Pie Shop on Tuesday night, and I regret to inform the readers of this thread that the quality of the food product served at this particular establishment (a four-piece fried chicken dinner, inclusive of mashed potatoes and gravy, coleslaw, and a semi-fresh dinner roll) was absolutely terrible.

del griffith, Sunday, 19 May 2024 03:25 (seven months ago) link

I like Rob Crow solo and some Pinback but Thingy and HV seemed too proggy/zolo or something for my taste

brimstead, Sunday, 19 May 2024 03:57 (seven months ago) link

Heavy Vegetable was pretty big on 91X when I was in high school and warped my music taste significantly, so they'll always be the Rob Crow thing that is most resonant to me. It's a hard thing to be objective about I guess.
