Both of your Shaggs critiques has made my day. I salute you both as learned, insightful gentlemen.

Aw thanks JC! no, YOU are a treat!! I felt bad about only having contributed a one-liner to the thread and Tim inspired me to pull out the record again. I totally agree with you though -- why is it seemingly so hard for writers to take the record seriously on its own bountiful musical merits? Why do need to hear about how it's "outsider" art? We have ears, we KNOW that. Someone better versed in theory could break it down better than I ever could, but the rhythms in the girls' guitar playing are constantly amazing.

i agree -- and the key point, i think in some ways, is that the songs are reproducible by the band and not freak accidents.

Talk about Outsider Music is tres fucked up anyway -- a mix of freakshow as opposed to actual musical merit (and i think there is a lot of music merit to stuff by, say, Jandek or Shooby "the human horn" Taylor (with shooby you have to concentrate on the vocals and ignore the canned music he "scatted" over). i hate the freakshow people who are just in the freak and dont care if the music is good or not and talk about the outsider musicians as if they ride a short bus and have downs syndrome.

Right on Jack, agree totally. I always admired the way you make the case for Daniel Johnston whenever his name comes up over on ILM.

Cheers!

I finally saw that Jandek movie and it was funny watching all the crits twist themselves into pretzels trying to describe how crazy and deranged he must be. I never bought that. You can't be really crazy and make it to the post office every day for 25 years to send people records. Real crazy people are lucky if they make it out the front door. Plus, the women who met him in Texas who described his fancy suit and silver cufflinks. That right there tells you something. And the phone interview they play is great. I got a definite "ex-hippy who had maybe done too many drugs in the past but who otherwise seemed normal" vibe. I think he works for a church and he just can't tell people that he likes to make devil music.

Eyeball, that was very nice on the shaggs thread. you should write more. unless you already do. i have no idea cuz i don't know your name.

El Sabor de Gene shot me right down, tho. :-(

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 3 September 2004 05:47 (twenty years ago)

el sabor takes no prisoners.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 3 September 2004 10:54 (twenty years ago)

thanks for the kind words, scott. Real name is Rob and, nope, not a writer. Never really tried to be; I'm really really lazy. Laziness will be the death of me. But I do enjoy trying to turn people on to stuff, so who knows? Maybe I'll give it a more professional whirl sometime.

Reed Moore (diamond), Friday, 3 September 2004 16:19 (twenty years ago)

Noize Dudes, feelings that one has been lazy over the last week or two may be attributable to the fact that Mercury has been in retrograde!

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 3 September 2004 19:58 (twenty years ago)

Mercury was always retrograde man, shit .. Savage Resurrection, Sir Lord Baltimore, J.D. Blackfoot, Wizards From Kansas, Uriah Heep.. fuck even CHARLES MANGIONE from ROCHESTER NEW YORK recorded for those fuckers.

i remember as a young msp, we (friends and i) thought lou barlowe was FUCKED. imagine our surprise when we saw sebadoh with harry pussy and smog and sebadoh came off like a happy go lucky frat band compared to their openers. not to be mean to either barlowe or frats or whatever... barlowe was such a normal dude, despite the folk implosion/sebadoh weird ride by that time. (this was before his poppier records... i don't think bakesale was out yet.)

harry pussy was a total bird to the crowd. (bird of the middle finger feather.) and smog... they were disturbed too.

the whole "outsiders" concept sorta depends on "insiders" as listeners, but as naive kids trying understand all this crazy music that no one knows about, we were flipping biscuits over anything that moved.

"aliens man! aliens! it's weird, but it makes me wanna cry!" -- jimmy the frap stumbling out of a midnight showing of close encounters of the third kind.
