I just ate the worst Indian I think I have ever had :( It was too spicy, yet had no flavour at all. The rice was watery. The meat was stringy. The naan bread was hard as a rock. It hurts me in my heart. Damn food court.

Trayce, Monday, 5 March 2007 02:06 (eighteen years ago)

i haven't yet tried this place i just ordered from... there's a site i use that handles food deliveries for restaurants in the area (you place your order online and pay with a credit card) and they recently added this one. the indian restaurant's $20 minimum suxors, but on the plus side there'll be tons of leftovers...

get bent, Monday, 5 March 2007 02:16 (eighteen years ago)

remy bean, Monday, 5 March 2007 02:29 (eighteen years ago)

Mmm I was craving the local Indian restaurant's korma sauce today. Something to look forward to for payday.

Curt1s Stephens, Monday, 5 March 2007 02:36 (eighteen years ago)

i has a food

get bent, Monday, 5 March 2007 02:58 (eighteen years ago)

You need to take one PATH train to Journal Square and go to the end of Newark Ave. (assuming you're in NYC). Rasoi for your standard northern Indian dishes, Dosa House or Dosa Hut for South Indian, and hit a sweet shop for dessert. Also worth stopping in one of the various all-purpose knick-knack/statuette/DVD/rug/cooking supply/bookstores.

Hurting 2, Monday, 5 March 2007 03:05 (eighteen years ago)

or you can just go to jackson heights

get bent, Monday, 5 March 2007 03:07 (eighteen years ago)

Hurting 2, Monday, 5 March 2007 03:10 (eighteen years ago)

gbx, Monday, 5 March 2007 03:28 (eighteen years ago)

gbx, Monday, 5 March 2007 03:29 (eighteen years ago)

i helped make indian food for a homemade indian food thanksgiving last thanksgiving and the lady at the indian food store recommended a 75-cent thing of ASAFOETIDA fart-negating gum powder. a little goes a long way and i tell you the farts was indeed negated (cool)

iiiijjjj, Monday, 5 March 2007 03:30 (eighteen years ago)

asafoetida is crucial to samosas

gbx, Monday, 5 March 2007 03:35 (eighteen years ago)

best indian food I've had was in Iselin NJ. Lauren and I have a good Rasoi (either that's spelled wrong or maybe I"m thinking of a different place?) story, going with my sister. They wrote down our appetizers on one sheet and entrees on the other. Lost the first one. Brought out the entrees only. Much confusion. They figure since they forgot the appetizers, we wouldn't want them since the entrees were already brought out. We were still hungry though.

Like today at sripraphai in queens, guy comes out and says "do you want the appetizers first or all at the same time?" we say appetizers first (crazy concept that), so they bring out the appetziers. Excatly 40 seconds later they bring out the entrees.

dan selzer, Monday, 5 March 2007 04:08 (eighteen years ago)

chicago folx should know its all about devon ave

deej, Monday, 5 March 2007 04:18 (eighteen years ago)

gbx, Monday, 5 March 2007 04:22 (eighteen years ago)

i would live there if it wasn't required that i would have to sometimes go to other parts of the city.

deej, Monday, 5 March 2007 04:28 (eighteen years ago)

Moghul in Edison, NJ is good for classed-up but not overly poncey Indian food. Good tandoori

Hurting 2, Monday, 5 March 2007 04:52 (eighteen years ago)

There are also a few good South Indian places on Rte 27 a little ways south of New Brunswick

Hurting 2, Monday, 5 March 2007 04:53 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, man, if I had to eat chicken vindaloo every day for the rest of my life, that would be just fine.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Monday, 5 March 2007 06:56 (eighteen years ago)

strgn, Monday, 5 March 2007 09:09 (eighteen years ago)

now i entirely want indian food...but am in midtown manhattan and know no real decent options...

bb, Monday, 5 March 2007 15:09 (eighteen years ago)

Minar on 32nd between 6th and 7th I think? And there's another one on 47th or 48th, whatever Brazil row is.

But the best of course is the Kwik Meal cart, 46th and 6th I think. Lamb and Chicken over rice with salad and raita. Can't be beat.

dan selzer, Monday, 5 March 2007 15:13 (eighteen years ago)

new place in providence has nice variety of regional indian dishes, very tasy, also where you can get the aforementioned brunch buffet:

3 foot dosa
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/148/389239183_82abd3bd5e.jpg?v=0

Yerac, Monday, 5 March 2007 15:24 (eighteen years ago)

dimple on 30th around broadway was/is pretty good for veg indian. i don't know their delivery area, though. there are some very good upscale places in midtown, but that's probably not what you want.

i'd love to go out to j.c. again soon for dinner or lunch or something. the last restaurant indian food i had was from imperial palace or whatever the hell it's called on manhattan ave, and it was vile. very sad and irritating to have to dump about $30 worth of mostly uneaten food into the trash. on the plus side, since there isn't any good indian near our apt i've become pretty good at cooking it.

lauren, Monday, 5 March 2007 15:28 (eighteen years ago)

i'll believe it when i eat it.

ian, Monday, 5 March 2007 15:31 (eighteen years ago)

you're welcome to come over for dinner sometime!

lauren, Monday, 5 March 2007 15:34 (eighteen years ago)

MAGIC WURDS

Laurel, Monday, 5 March 2007 15:40 (eighteen years ago)

Ha, the lady's expression is like "FUCK yeah, we made a 3-foot dosa" and the dude is like "I just smoked a bowl and I'm going to go to town on this thing."

Hurting 2, Monday, 5 March 2007 15:40 (eighteen years ago)

lauren, Monday, 5 March 2007 15:41 (eighteen years ago)

that dosa was awesome, i had a dosa that was deepfried with paneer and garlic.

Yerac, Monday, 5 March 2007 15:44 (eighteen years ago)

Indian food is so addictive. Even when I know I am full I can't stop eating it. My friend who lives in Jax Hts likes Delhi Palace, so I've eaten there a few times. I want to try Spicy Minas. I haven't been to Jackson Diner since it used to be a small little place and we would bring our own wine there.

Virginia Plain, Monday, 14 January 2008 04:46 (seventeen years ago)

I'll go back to 5 Star and try it again. It's been ages since I've been there.

dan selzer, Monday, 14 January 2008 13:46 (seventeen years ago)

Is sparky's still open? love that place

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 14 January 2008 14:19 (seventeen years ago)

i think egg completely took over sparky's, but i could be wrong about that.

lauren, Monday, 14 January 2008 15:25 (seventeen years ago)

RIP

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 14 January 2008 15:41 (seventeen years ago)

There's mediocre lunch Indian by my office but I don't even care, I'll eat it. Hurrah for korma!

Laurel, Monday, 14 January 2008 16:05 (seventeen years ago)

I have indian food but I want a nanini

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 14 January 2008 16:54 (seventeen years ago)

maybe i should just get a SMOOOTHIE and a HOT DOG

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 14 January 2008 16:55 (seventeen years ago)

is curry especially unhealthy? it doesn't seem like it, although i guess there could be a lot of cream or butter or whatever in the sauce. i ask because i am considering all-curry diet.

Jordan, Monday, 14 January 2008 17:12 (seventeen years ago)

There's the really hot coconut curry that I had this summer that I forget.

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 14 January 2008 17:25 (seventeen years ago)

xpost ghee is some really oily stuff, and yeah there is a lot of butter too

dan m, Monday, 14 January 2008 17:32 (seventeen years ago)

a lot of the anglicized stuff is loaded with cream, oil, and butter.

lauren, Monday, 14 January 2008 17:32 (seventeen years ago)

i'll see what happens and make a documentary about it

Jordan, Monday, 14 January 2008 17:35 (seventeen years ago)

xpost ghee is some really oily stuff, and yeah there is a lot of butter too

uh, ghee is butter

remy bean, Monday, 14 January 2008 17:36 (seventeen years ago)

ok clarified butter

dan m, Monday, 14 January 2008 17:40 (seventeen years ago)

curry is actually pretty decent for you, however it is important you get it from a reputable curry place. cheaper restaurants tend to make the curries en masse and store them in refrigerated vats to reheat on a per capita basis, while better places will prepare only the curry sauces ahead of time, and the meat/veggies for individual orders.

remy bean, Monday, 14 January 2008 17:45 (seventeen years ago)

C@rly G00dm@n's roommate just played GHEE in scrabble!!

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 14 January 2008 17:46 (seventeen years ago)

i've wondered about that, remy. i don't know for sure but my local joint is so good that they've got to do the latter.

Jordan, Monday, 14 January 2008 17:58 (seventeen years ago)

maybe i should release a poll: "best type of curry" ?

i like:

massaman with duck

and

red curry with pork

the most.

remy bean, Monday, 14 January 2008 18:07 (seventeen years ago)

I think duck is "too complex"

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 14 January 2008 18:11 (seventeen years ago)

only if you don't chew the beak thorougly

remy bean, Monday, 14 January 2008 18:14 (seventeen years ago)

lamb masala and chicken makhani are curries that i enjoy.

Jordan, Monday, 14 January 2008 18:17 (seventeen years ago)

on xmas eve i went to that upscalish indian place on the sw corner of 6th and A. it was very very awes.

get bent, Monday, 14 January 2008 18:21 (seventeen years ago)

I need to try more Indians foods, I always have the same thing. But it makes me so happy. Like right now!

Laurel, Monday, 14 January 2008 18:27 (seventeen years ago)

actually now i'm fairly sure it was banjara on 1st ave -- i had lamb pasanda, mulligatawny, naan. oh man.

get bent, Monday, 14 January 2008 18:30 (seventeen years ago)

banjara is very good.

lauren, Monday, 14 January 2008 18:31 (seventeen years ago)

my parents actually have an a+ indian place in their town now. not fair! they had this combo deal with so much foods it was enough for like 3 people but was only like $12 or something ridiculous.

i had cheap indian w/ morbs the other day. not the greatest ever, but good in a pinch.

tehresa, Monday, 14 January 2008 18:37 (seventeen years ago)

curry in a hurry?

bell_labs, Monday, 14 January 2008 18:38 (seventeen years ago)

laurel, what is your indian thing?

Jordan, Monday, 14 January 2008 18:42 (seventeen years ago)

Korma/kurma, mmmmmmmmm. Prefer lamb if avail. Joy Indian on Flatbush does one so fragrant and thick and dark, I could eat it w/ a spoon, while today's lunch korma is weaker but still acceptable.

Laurel, Monday, 14 January 2008 18:44 (seventeen years ago)

chicken makhani is not really particularly healthy as it's all butter. but it's delicious and life is short.

i make an excellent korma, if i do say so myself.

horseshoe, Monday, 14 January 2008 18:48 (seventeen years ago)

I mean if a nice mustard-colored, aromatic korma sauce is some kind of Americanized, fake-Indian horror, then I don't want to be right. I love that shit.

Recipe, hs??

Laurel, Monday, 14 January 2008 18:53 (seventeen years ago)

lunch and dinner for me yesterday was goat korma (qorma?) and mad naan

dan m, Monday, 14 January 2008 18:54 (seventeen years ago)

I'll email it to you later this afternoon, Laurel! it's a Madhur Jaffrey recipe. so i guess Madhur Jaffrey makes an excellent korma, really.

horseshoe, Monday, 14 January 2008 18:55 (seventeen years ago)

it's pretty mustard-colored (saffron) and aromatic!

horseshoe, Monday, 14 January 2008 18:57 (seventeen years ago)

four months pass...

I am going to pick up lunch from Sirtaj on West 26th and eat in sunshine, if anyone's near.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:32 (seventeen years ago)

What is the name of that vegetarian place on East 27th? I thought that was OK.

caek, Friday, 30 May 2008 17:20 (seventeen years ago)

in the microwave now

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Friday, 30 May 2008 22:59 (seventeen years ago)

I will have it in 20 min. I'm so stoked! Chana saag, various roasted/curried meats, garlic naaaaan

Dan I., Friday, 30 May 2008 23:16 (seventeen years ago)

indian food, I love you, I could eat you every day and be happy

Dan I., Friday, 30 May 2008 23:16 (seventeen years ago)

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Friday, 30 May 2008 23:38 (seventeen years ago)

I have eaten nothing but reheated samosas for the past 30 hours or so, save some buttered toast with my coffee this morning. I am the resurrection and the life, and having had a delicious beer, I am going to get up and eat another.

Jacob, Saturday, 31 May 2008 03:50 (seventeen years ago)

maybe this weekend i will get a dosa from the sinister-looking south indian place on sunset that i've been meaning to try for nearly a year
