Discuss outsider music (what's good, is it really outsider, etc.). I will add more later, but now it's off to work.

Maybe there are two uses of the term, one being music that is "outside" any trends whatsoever and bizarre or eccentric, the other being music made by people who are "mentally disadvantaged?"

I don't know if the Shaggs really fit either. I think they were just trying to do pop/folk rock-oriented music. Their naivete about the song construction is hard to judge. Maybe they were aware of it and just didn't care! The themes of the songs sometimes seem a little childish for their age and the grammar ("The skinny people want what the fat peoples got," etc.) may seem strange for people of their age, too. But it's not all THAT strange; I don't really see them as idiot-savants at all.

I wasn't so into the Reynols album I had. It was the "________" one on Black Bean and Placenta/Betley Welcomes Careful Drivers. Maybe if it hadn't been Harry Pussy style recording technique, I would have gotten into listening to it more.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 3 September 2004 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

tim, have you heard the no reynols/reynols thing on Freedom From? i like that the best.

as for reynols, i don't really think they are on the "outside" at all, but get tagged that because miguel has down syndrome. the other two are very knowledgable about compositional and experimental music . . .

jack cole (jackcole), Friday, 3 September 2004 05:22 (twenty-one years ago)

also, as for "outsider", h, what would you suggest to describe a certain set of musicians/music? i know "outsider music" sort of sucks, but when its invoked, people know what's being referenced.

Feel the Power of Rock and Roll lyrics
Found on Metal Clink Punishment Jail and Greatest Hits Vol. 2 by wesley willis

Play the rock guitar like a rock star
Rock the casbah like a hurricane
Rock and roll is my music for a joyride
Whip that werewolf with a belt

Feel the power of rock and roll
Feel the power of rock and roll
Feel the power of rock and roll
Feel the power of rock and roll

Play the Fender Strat guitar
Rock it to the Maxwell House
Rock it on the mic, homey!
Rock Saddam Hussein's ass to Russia

Feel the power of rock and roll
Feel the power of rock and roll
Feel the power of rock and roll
Feel the power of rock and roll

Play the rock solo as hard as you can in Woodstock, New York
Make the crowd of 300,000 people roar like a sea monster
Take everyone on a harmony joyride
Whip the hell out of that werewolf's ass

Feel the power of rock and roll
Feel the power of rock and roll
Feel the power of rock and roll
Feel the power of rock and roll

Packard Bell, it's the world's number one selling home computer
