JW, Friday, 9 March 2007 19:09 (eighteen years ago)

what in the hell is that thing

strongohulkington, Friday, 9 March 2007 19:14 (eighteen years ago)

CHARLIE is the new mascot for the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority in Boston, I guess. CHARLIE CARDS. No idea what made them choose that name, though.

elmo argonaut, Friday, 9 March 2007 19:16 (eighteen years ago)

it looks like a grown-up version of the little lego man starring in a rep theater version of death of a salesman

strongohulkington, Friday, 9 March 2007 19:18 (eighteen years ago)

some kind of Judge Doom (? -- Roger Rabbit), Lego + Simpsons thing?

JW, Friday, 9 March 2007 19:18 (eighteen years ago)

seems like some inland empire shit

elmo argonaut, Friday, 9 March 2007 19:20 (eighteen years ago)

worst part is that it is doomed from the start to be pronounced CHAHLY CAHD.

elmo argonaut, Friday, 9 March 2007 19:21 (eighteen years ago)

omg judge doom

and what, Friday, 9 March 2007 19:21 (eighteen years ago)

JW, Friday, 9 March 2007 19:30 (eighteen years ago)

the Charlie name comes from some song from the 40s about a guy who rode the T all day because he had nowhere else to go. The song was protesting a rate hike. So uh. Yeah.

do you come to Boston a lot or summat elmo?

jessie monster, Friday, 9 March 2007 19:43 (eighteen years ago)

I'm originally from Walpole and I've got some family on the North Shore, so I used to be around Boston a lot -- I'm generally not a huge fan of Boston tho, especially if I'm driving -- I'll go for a concert or something a few times a year

elmo argonaut, Friday, 9 March 2007 19:46 (eighteen years ago)

yeah there is increasingly no good reason to come to Boston. :/

jessie monster, Friday, 9 March 2007 19:47 (eighteen years ago)

did he ever return? no he never returned

Mr. Que, Friday, 9 March 2007 19:48 (eighteen years ago)

Hey the dropkick murphys taught me something useful!

JW, Friday, 9 March 2007 19:49 (eighteen years ago)

My last trip to Boston was for a birthday party at Medieval Manor, and THAT was fucking awesome...

but not awesome enough for me to rethink my opinion of Boston

elmo argonaut, Friday, 9 March 2007 19:52 (eighteen years ago)

BUT DID HE EVER RETURN, NO HE NEVER RETURNED AND HIS FATE IS STILL UNLEARNED (UNLEARNED!) AND HE'LL RIDE FOREVER THROUGH THE STREETS OF BOSTON HE'S THE MAN WHO NEVER RETURNED!

the plot of the song has him not being able to afford to get off the train because of the rate increase or whatever so every day his wife slips him a sandwhich bag.

WHY DIDN'T HIS WIFE SLIP A NICKEL INTO HIS SANDWHICH BAG?!?!??!

Full lyrics:

used to sing this shit at summer camp!

dan selzer, Friday, 9 March 2007 19:55 (eighteen years ago)

yeah i kind of love that song.

Mr. Que, Friday, 9 March 2007 19:56 (eighteen years ago)

elmo argonaut on Friday, 9 March 2007 18:59 (1 hour ago)

am0n, Friday, 9 March 2007 20:04 (eighteen years ago)

unsolved mysteries gave me stupid scary nightmares, man. that and america's most wanted right before bedtime == restless 6 year old

elmo argonaut, Friday, 9 March 2007 20:08 (eighteen years ago)

i had about 6 months around that time where i was so paranoid that BALL LIGHTNING was going to get me. i thought it was some sort of malevolent mysterious entity, like bigfoot, rather than, superheated plasma

elmo argonaut, Friday, 9 March 2007 20:12 (eighteen years ago)

ts; ball lightning vs. men w/ one ball

Edward III, Friday, 9 March 2007 20:33 (eighteen years ago)

america's most wanted right before bedtime == restless 6 year old

it's always reassuring to hear "america, help us find jericho finch who is suspected in the sexual assault and mutilation of 22 young boys" right before you head into yr dark dark room for the night

Edward III, Friday, 9 March 2007 20:37 (eighteen years ago)

clementine vs. dinah

sexyDancer, Friday, 9 March 2007 20:38 (eighteen years ago)

it didn't help that I lived in only several miles away from a maximum security prison!

xxpost

elmo argonaut, Friday, 9 March 2007 20:40 (eighteen years ago)

FUCK A CHAHLY

RIGHT IN THE CHEEK SPHINCTER

Edward III, Friday, 9 March 2007 20:41 (eighteen years ago)

I love those signs on the highway that say "PRISON NEARBY - DO NOT STOP FOR PEDESTRIANS" or some similar spooky shit

Edward III, Friday, 9 March 2007 20:43 (eighteen years ago)

my dad's from boston. um, that's all i got.

latebloomer, Friday, 9 March 2007 21:01 (eighteen years ago)

it didn't help that I lived in only several miles away from a maximum security prison!

mci walpole?

"PRISON NEARBY - DO NOT STOP FOR PEDESTRIANS"

there's a mental health hospital about 1/4 - 1/2 mile east of where i work, those signs are on roosevelt rd, i see them every morning.

chicago kevin, Friday, 9 March 2007 21:03 (eighteen years ago)

actually it just says DO NOT PICK UP HITCH HIKERS.

chicago kevin, Friday, 9 March 2007 21:04 (eighteen years ago)

kevin - yep! good ol' cedar junction

elmo argonaut, Friday, 9 March 2007 21:05 (eighteen years ago)

I thought those were guerilla ads for the hitcher

Edward III, Friday, 9 March 2007 21:05 (eighteen years ago)

i never understood why they didn't change the name of the TOWN to cedar junction because you know that to everyone else in the commonwealth, when you say you're from walpole they're thinking "convict".

chicago kevin, Friday, 9 March 2007 21:07 (eighteen years ago)

I dunno, I imagine that I enjoy Boston in the same way that I might enjoy purgatory.

jessie monster, Friday, 9 March 2007 21:07 (eighteen years ago)

jessie, if you can't enjoy boston when you're in your early 20s then you will never enjoy it and you should probably leave sooner rather than later. trust me on this one.

chicago kevin, Friday, 9 March 2007 21:10 (eighteen years ago)

seriously the shout-out to robert stack has staved off contemplating suicide for at least another week or two

latebloomer, Friday, 9 March 2007 21:11 (eighteen years ago)

MBTA is shit

elmo argonaut, Friday, 9 March 2007 21:16 (eighteen years ago)

jessie, if you can't enjoy boston when you're in your early 20s then you will never enjoy it and you should probably leave sooner rather than later. trust me on this one.

chicago kevin on Friday, March 9, 2007 4:10 PM (6 minutes ago)

It's not so much that I can't enjoy it....I can MAKE fun pretty much anywhere--I'm from one of the most boring cities in America! (Also terrible driving conditions, no public transportation, etc., I actually have less of a problem with Boston than A LOT of people apparently.) But recent laws (18+ shows are banned now, everyone has to have health insurance) and general cost of living make me think that while I can just laugh at the absurdity when I'm an undergrad, it would really suck to be around here at 25 while actually trying to support myself.

jessie monster, Friday, 9 March 2007 21:21 (eighteen years ago)

you could move down to providence and be one of those funky mill loft girls

elmo argonaut, Friday, 9 March 2007 21:26 (eighteen years ago)

that sounds like I'd have to become a vegan and buy expensive cheap-looking clothes. :(

jessie monster, Friday, 9 March 2007 21:36 (eighteen years ago)

no, you just have to use common bathrooms and deal with noise bands practicing next door while you try to sleep.

elmo argonaut, Friday, 9 March 2007 21:38 (eighteen years ago)

sounds like my freshman year dorm.

jessie monster, Friday, 9 March 2007 21:40 (eighteen years ago)

NYC lofts > Providence lofts

JW, Friday, 9 March 2007 21:47 (eighteen years ago)

I can MAKE fun pretty much anywhere

yeah, but can you clean it up?

Edward III, Friday, 9 March 2007 21:48 (eighteen years ago)

NYC rent >>>>>>>>>>>> Providence rent

Edward III, Friday, 9 March 2007 21:48 (eighteen years ago)

stfu jon

elmo argonaut, Friday, 9 March 2007 21:49 (eighteen years ago)

the city of providence actively attacks loft culture, though, and there are fewer places to run.

Edward III, Friday, 9 March 2007 21:49 (eighteen years ago)

if you replace "noise bands practicing" with "people singing aloud to late 90s alternarock"

jessie monster, Friday, 9 March 2007 21:49 (eighteen years ago)

also, you never lived in providence

elmo argonaut, Friday, 9 March 2007 21:50 (eighteen years ago)

PURGATORY NOW RENAMED HELL

Edward III, Friday, 9 March 2007 21:50 (eighteen years ago)

that's an xpost. My boss needed me to go watch Chicken Noodle Soup dancing.

jessie monster, Friday, 9 March 2007 21:50 (eighteen years ago)

true fact: my roommate calls purgatory "the purg" and we once had a lengthy drunken discussion between the three of us about how long each of us would be there.

jessie monster, Friday, 9 March 2007 21:51 (eighteen years ago)

jon sonned in providence proof-of-residence beef

Edward III, Friday, 9 March 2007 21:51 (eighteen years ago)

Ed, are you in RI? Have we met?

elmo argonaut, Friday, 9 March 2007 21:51 (eighteen years ago)

the purg sounds like some hip abbreviate of pittsburgh

Edward III, Friday, 9 March 2007 21:53 (eighteen years ago)

elmo 1) yes 2) no

but this is RI so it's just a matter of time re: #2

Edward III, Friday, 9 March 2007 21:54 (eighteen years ago)

JW, STRAIGHT OUT OF LITTLE COMPTON

elmo argonaut, Friday, 9 March 2007 21:54 (eighteen years ago)

actually I take #2 back, I think we might have met at terrastock.

Edward III, Friday, 9 March 2007 21:55 (eighteen years ago)

NYC lofts > Providence lofts

no shared bathrooms in mine; although I was in a "mixed use artists building" the other day with twisty halls and shared bathrooms with hard concrete cloors

if you replace "noise bands practicing" with "people singing aloud to late 90s alternarock"

Our next door neighbors do this. Also acting like I'm the fucking cops when they're smoking weed and I arrive to drop off some mail for them and introduce myself. JERKS.

JW, Friday, 9 March 2007 21:56 (eighteen years ago)

E3, STRAIGHT OUTTA CRANSTON

Edward III, Friday, 9 March 2007 21:57 (eighteen years ago)

this is very possible! i was drunk and/or high most of the time, also 2 of the terrastock days I was tripping. so it was likely not a very coherent introduction on my part, if we did meet.

elmo argonaut, Friday, 9 March 2007 21:57 (eighteen years ago)

Did I meet you at Terrastock?

JW, Friday, 9 March 2007 22:04 (eighteen years ago)

I think you were grinning a lot, so that sounds about right.

costes is playing with kites next wed. in olneyville.

Edward III, Friday, 9 March 2007 22:07 (eighteen years ago)

Anyway, FUCK RIPTA

elmo argonaut, Friday, 9 March 2007 22:08 (eighteen years ago)

That show sounds "thrilling".

JW, Friday, 9 March 2007 22:10 (eighteen years ago)

that was x-post to elmo...

I didn't attend terrastock per se - I went to the pre-terrstock AMT show, chauffered ned around a little, went to the first day fap and met a couple ilxors. I think you arrived later jon while I was sitting at home crying into my webcast. I think I just missed meeting robyn too.

Edward III, Friday, 9 March 2007 22:12 (eighteen years ago)

there were hotdogs

JW, Friday, 9 March 2007 22:15 (eighteen years ago)

some cool prov area shows in april.

4/2
white mice

4/5 boston
battles / major stars

4/6
battles

4/18
peter brötzmann / landed

Edward III, Friday, 9 March 2007 22:19 (eighteen years ago)

landed!

JW, Friday, 9 March 2007 22:31 (eighteen years ago)

I'd rather see OSS get back together

JW, Friday, 9 March 2007 22:31 (eighteen years ago)

i'm glad i'm not the only one that read judge dredd comics

river wolf, Saturday, 10 March 2007 00:11 (eighteen years ago)

that new battles track seriously flipped my wig the other day, i am so there

elmo argonaut, Saturday, 10 March 2007 00:51 (eighteen years ago)

I didn't read Judge Dread much but I had a Nemesis collection.

dan selzer, Saturday, 10 March 2007 04:44 (eighteen years ago)

yea, landed's cool but oss > landed. oss is supposed to play again soon. it would be great if they reformed but I think adam's living in brooklyn now.

unfortunately I'm gonna be out of town for the prov battles show, elmo. trying to decide if I should take a ride up to boston for the battles/major stars show. I'm leaning towards yes since I keep missing major stars when they play prov.

new battles alb is a lot more math rock-y then "atlas" lets on. heard they're great live.
