Allowing HTML posts leaves the site open to security problems, as was seen in the CSS attacks on the old boards. While code can be tightened to check for them, they present a moving target as new holes emerge and browsers evolve. The code you see (which only coincidentally looks like the BBCode used on some other sites) allows you to do the most common actions, such as italics, bold, quoting, strike-through and images. There's a reference card below the posting box. Currently, it doesn't allow images to be links to other sites.

it would be kind of weird if a cabal of users started 2-3 innocuous seeming polls a day for a year, all scheduled to end together and flood new answers on 9/11.
