srsly, rrrobyn is awesome.

tehresa, Friday, 16 March 2007 03:08 (seventeen years ago) link

i am possibly an agent of perpetuity
but that's all, at least re: words like that

triceratreetops has been all busy preparing for our upcoming shows and we haven't been dealing with recorded matters. prob within the next two weeks though. richard might be putting up another sample mp3 soon too. but i'm glad you want music and like that little bit of song on myspace! it is quiet when in fact we are often loud. my ears are right now tired from the practicing.
so, mp3s = soon!

:D

RRROBYN, WHY CAN THERE NOT BE PEACE BETWEEN TORONTO AND MONTREAL!?

bell_labs, Friday, 16 March 2007 20:08 (seventeen years ago) link

I DO NOT KNOW! i think it is actually just a lie and they love each other but are afraid to admit their love in the wake of what history has wrought.
i truly love a lot about toronto and several of my favourite people live there, but i am honour-bound to talk about its doucheyness at times whether i believe it or not.

i have played guitar for the past 4 hrs and sung into my new chromatic tuner. my head is v floaty right now.

bell_labs, Friday, 4 May 2007 17:41 (seventeen years ago) link

the shows happen throughout june at two venues that are pretty much across from each other (sala rossa and casa del popolo) - so it's like an extended festival rather than a wkend thing - http://www.casadelpopolo.com/suoni/about.htm).
i kind of spent last june in a sweet music daze really, so prob the same for this year if i end up writing abt it/shows (likely).

rrrobyn, Friday, 4 May 2007 17:49 (seventeen years ago) link

it's at a couple of venues across the street from each other, owned by the organizers. it's a great festival. and they have one day where they do the festival in the park.

i just realized that that world is only now catching on to it! i kinda assumed people knew about it!

i took the bus to nyc! from the berri-uqam station here (downtown) to port authority stn. it was fine! and, like, $120 cdn. i mean, it was a bus. the train takes longer (bus was just under 8 hrs? a full working day anyway. train is like 10-12! montreal is far away!) i hear and is the same price and more comfortable and prob more scenic. it is kind of a toss up depending on what one values, how much time one has, how much you want to be on ilx while on a train, etc.

btw things are now getting green and the sunsets feel like normal pretty sunsets and not the slowly closing eye of a cruel tundra god one has nevertheless grown to love.

The book was "Babylon Babies" by Maurice Dantec. It had some good passages and interesting ideas but I'd give it a mixed review.

There's a movie that's barely based on a few things in the book starring Vin Diesel. Movie lacks Mtl, though.

My loves and my doves, some of you might have seen a recent fb post by ilxor rrrobyn with some not encouraging news about her current condition. It's awfully, hatefully, worse than that, and she has been moved to hospice.

If you know her, maybe send her your love and affection. If you want to support another way, there is a fund that I just found out about. It supposedly closes tomorrow but we might be able to request an extension. Anyway if you want to and can, it's here.

A mutual friend who is closer to Robyn and in better communication with her has been giving me updates and asked me to share a couple of opportunities here:

First of all, Robyn's colleagues at Delve are making a whole podcast for her. I don't know exactly where or when it will be airing, but they're asking:

We are creating a personalized podcast for Robyn. Please send a song that you think Robyn might like and a one-minute voice recording explaining why you chose the song.

Song: Send the YouTube link for the piece of music so we have the right version. We'll take care of downloading the full version.

Voice recording: Use your phone's voice memo feature [to record] a 60-second explanation [of the song].

Please send both to eric.dicaire @ mc gill.ca

Email without the spaces obv.

The second opportunity, set up by someone else, is a Spotify playlist being made that anyone can add songs to. That playlist is here.

There are several Billy Joel songs already on the playlist so no disrespect to the man (Allyzay would end me) but Robyn is so much wonderfuller and weirder than that. Go forth.

Back in 2006, Robyn and I were Gchat pals, and she invited me to visit Montreal and stay with her for a few days. She was the best host. We walked around the city a lot, hung out with her friends, went to a dance party. I remember her as funny, empathetic, curious about the world, and just generally full of life. The kind of person you want to be more like.

We didn't keep in touch much after that (apart from ILX), but I've been feeling sad and not sure what to say since this thread was revived last week. What a loss. May she rest in peace.

I wish I'd gone to Mtl to stay with her and silent-dance-party at the winter festival and do all the things she introduced us to via her life and her journalism and her love of fun. She was a sage and a mystic who looked for the unseen. I am so lucky that our lives touched for a while.

That's a lovely post.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Monday, 23 September 2024 18:28 (three months ago) link

I don't know what to say, but I also want to say so much. I had typed something out and accidentally lost it the other day, and it seems so wrong to say anything in the past tense. But she was always a being in the universe, and I feel like she still is, even if it's not in the same way

Robyn was fiercely independent, but also the person most generous in spirit I've known. She was constantly in motion, moving forward, and doing anything with her felt like an adventure. Take her hand, and away you go, off to do great things. You'd have to hold on tight, because she just would not stop. She cared so much. I can't even say the world is a little less bright today, because I feel like she'd take issue with that and demand it be brighter.

scott, you'd be happy to know that the first time I dropped by her place, she pointed out a mixtape that you had made and sent to her. She was so happy that you'd done that!

i read the two montreal alt-weeklies that s1ocki and robyn wrote for every week throughout my adolescence. they both came out on monday, and id read them on the metro and bus to school. it’s kind of crazy that there were two anglophone alt weeklies in a majority francophone city. and maybe it’s just nostalgias rose tinted glasses but iirc they were both unusually exceptionally good? the quantity and quality of reporting on local nightlife, art, film screenings, made the city feel really huge and lively and wide-open to me. montreal in the 2000s was a pretty magical place (and in many ways it still is) but i think a lot of the effect im describing was the product of the infectiousness of the enthusiasm of writers like robyn. it’s so wonderful that robyn had a platform to project the enthusiasm and curiosity that many of the people who knew her personally are attesting to so widely. writing and posting feels so different now with the internet being what it is, and it’s easy to fall into being a cynical crabby couch potato. but the kind of writing and work robyn devoted her career to, which propulsively brought things happening in the outside world to the page, does have an outsized impact that stretches really far outside it’s initial radius, and goes a long way in imbuing the world with the magic life force in the minds of so many people

I initially met rrrobyn irl after I'd had a really shitty time in my own life and just needed to get away and do something fun. I ended up deciding the mutek festival in mtl was up my alley and ended up meeting her there. She wrote artist bios for their festival programs (in that same inimitable style mentioned in the mRb article) and occasionally did artist interviews at the festival.

I've ended up heading up to mtl for the festival again and our schedules lined up the following year so we spent a lot more time bouncing between events, along with some other trips I ended up taking. She was frustrated when she ended up spraining her ankle in 2014 and couldn't come out after the first couple days of mutek. This was the beginning of June, so she was almost five months pregnant at that point but slowing down wasn't really a thing she did.

I've never met either of her brothers, but she had a lot of funny stories about them. She had a friend visiting the west coast, and robyn passed on the contact info for her brother who lived out near Vancouver. I guess he ended up taking the friend on some wild adventure and when they got back they were like, "I didn't know I was going to get Fadden'd!!"
