Of Montreal please go away. we need to move past valuing quirkyness. its starting to grate and I even liked that Lil Miss Sunshine movie ok.

Explosions of the Sky: Please go back to 1996. They remind me of that South park episode where dude was frozen for a few years and wears eddie bauer and listens to 'barbie girl'

Deerhunter guy: please eat some food so you dont die.

To those people who accuse Kevin Barnes of 'selling-out':
Apparently he was high on antidepressants (according to Pitchforkmedia) when he approved this commercial. He now wishes he hadn't.

This isnt Of Montreal in this commercial. Kevin Barnes just signed something that he wasnt clear on and now Outback has the rights to the melody of the song. So its another band in this commercial using Of Montreal's music. Brian Poole the guitarist also said that they didnt get a whole lot out of the deal.

To me, the fact that some fairly unknown "flamboyant" and "feminine" (not gay) indie band decided to make a commercial with a big tough MANLY steakhouse company is pretty freaking awesome! I mean, that is SO absurd, silly, and original that only an indie band would want to do something like that. Have you seen the show, the guy that wears a dress and make up on stages is selling steaks!!! How is that not an original idea and maybe Barnes was thinking about that.

'of all the time I've spent listening to Kevin Barnes "sincerity;"
then to see the Father of Words rape his child on TV; never apologizing - feigning shock and rage when his set was heckled!

To those who defend [his] avarice:
'Youve never enjoyed Elephant 6 enough to be outraged.
Youre ticks, burrowed into the skull of culture.
Like other parasites, you figure it's fine to suck the blood from Greater Things; you dont GET integrity, because you dont HAVE integrity.'
You are scum.

It's effective advertising.. They played this during the Ohio State Game and a few older relatives who had no idea who Of Montreal is were singing and humming the song because it's catchy.. A smart move by both Of Montreal and Outback. At least they don't show the band there eating a bloomin onion!

it reminds me of when i heard modest mouse on a mini-van commercial.

you broke my heart, of montreal... ::sigh::

pitchfork media has an article about it if anyone cares to hear kevin defend the decision.. something about making a very theatrical show in january or something. their shows are pretty damn good already.

what's everyone complaining about? the remake is an improvement over the original. it's actually catchier and Kevin Barnes' voice doesn't sound its annoying self.

and it's ****ing Of Montreal. Not GYBE or Sunn 0))) or anything where you're supposed to be surprised if their song appears on a commercial.

"We were approached by Outback Steakhouse's ad agency asking about making their own cover version of 'Wraith Pinned to the Mist (And Other Games)' for one of their commercials. We thought it would be totally amusing to hear their take on one of our songs as a jingle."

You don't have to like their music, but don't accuse them of selling out.

A band posing as a legitimate musical group doing advert music = sellout, any way you try to slice it.

strongohulkington, Monday, 19 March 2007 20:18 (eighteen years ago)

i cant say i find that too surprising. when i was in high school all the other dudes on the lacrosse team were real real into danzig, but i think they just like the big, over the top dynamics of it all.

strongohulkington, Monday, 19 March 2007 20:28 (eighteen years ago)

those fuckers did get real xcited about danzig..and im sure it was the complxities of the his rhyming schemes that did it...WHoa

and recall, mogwai at one point around 2000 referred to their schtick as "sports goth". trackpants and all that jazz.

Newsom does listeners no such favors, and instead strands them in a meandering hell. She plunks away at her harp and seemingly free-associates lyrics while Van Dyke Parks (an old master at landing work bearing no relation to rock music in the rock section of record stores) provides aimless orchestral squiggles and noodles in the background. It's like being stuck in the seat next to a chatty, batshit backwoods pixie for an 18-hour plane ride.

to cite the example of an elementary, classic, hugely influential band such as....uh, the boredoms, well, if you mention Eye and company to any of these 'alt-indie' fakers, they will shrug at you. almost nobody has heard of the truly important (and truly alternative) bands (talk talk, the original ILM staple, has an audience of roughly 0 amongst current 20 year-olds), and really EITS are nothing more than the coldplay of post-rock. 'the earth...' is a very good album, but it ain't nearly as out there as its fans might think.

i was lucky enough to find the only two Foetus fans in the entire British university system!
