Even in his earliest work the seeds of Cummings' unconventional style seem well established. At age six Cummings wrote to his father:

FATHER DEAR. BE, YOUR FATHER-GOOD AND GOOD,

FATHER DEAR IS, IT, DEAR, NO FATHER DEAR,
