DOLLARSTORES ARE GREAT EVEN IF THEY ARE KIND OF GROSS IN SEVERAL WAYS!!!!

rrrobyn, Friday, 13 April 2007 04:12 (eighteen years ago)

i went into one this morning to buy dish sponges and ended up also buying discount easter marshmallow eggs and a jar of orange marmalade

rrrobyn, Friday, 13 April 2007 04:13 (eighteen years ago)

i almost bought a striped nylon placemat for the cats' food area
but c'mon i'm not made of dollars

rrrobyn, Friday, 13 April 2007 04:15 (eighteen years ago)

there are really a lot of dollar stores here, many of which hold true to the name (plus tax)

rrrobyn, Friday, 13 April 2007 04:22 (eighteen years ago)

there is also a dollar cinema!
it is gross in some of the same ways dollar stores are gross
e.g., dirty floors, apathetic staff, weird smells sometimes

rrrobyn, Friday, 13 April 2007 04:25 (eighteen years ago)

e.g., the constant reminder that all these products + your emotions re: them are fleeting and in fact manufactured to be that way

rrrobyn, Friday, 13 April 2007 04:28 (eighteen years ago)

dollarstore-related art and pontification i guess

rrrobyn, Friday, 13 April 2007 04:36 (eighteen years ago)

the dollarstore near my house is a dollarama, which i just found out is headquartered here!
dollarama's official website
hahaha

rrrobyn, Friday, 13 April 2007 04:39 (eighteen years ago)

i also love dollarstores rrrobyny yayayayaayaya

bell_labs, Friday, 13 April 2007 04:39 (eighteen years ago)

:D

i don't go to them too often but today i went after yoga so was a bit weeeoooaah and able to browse a couple aisles w/o being overwhelmed. there is some weird stuff, esp in the 'personal care' section.

oh i also bought some triple-a batteries for my bike lights - sunbeam brand 6 for a dollar. they have not failed me in the past nor have the 9Vs.

rrrobyn, Friday, 13 April 2007 05:00 (eighteen years ago)

but the 9Vs are panas0n1c

rrrobyn, Friday, 13 April 2007 05:01 (eighteen years ago)

also, i have been told that japanese 99/100 yen stores pwn the hell out of dollar stores. i am sure this is 100% true.

rrrobyn, Friday, 13 April 2007 05:13 (eighteen years ago)

"That'll be $1.07."
"Your total is $2.14, sir."
"And it comes to $3.21."
"$4.28, please."
"$5.35. What's that? No, $5.35. Yeah."

Pleasant Plains, Friday, 13 April 2007 05:15 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, i know...
i paid in exact change today though, incl several pennies

i dunno where it is anymore, but a few years ago i remember reading a blog where a dude and his girl only lived off stuff from the dollar store below their house. food, product, etc. it was kinda foul.

jaxon, Friday, 13 April 2007 06:07 (eighteen years ago)

about a year ago i bought this at a dollar store:

latebloomer, Friday, 13 April 2007 06:15 (eighteen years ago)

i do love the random crap you find at them, such as bins full of cd singles by failed boy bands with names like "Faze 4"

latebloomer, Friday, 13 April 2007 06:19 (eighteen years ago)

I got John Dean's Worse than Watergate from Dollar Tree.

I am not down with their no credit cards except for Discover policy.

tokyo rosemary, Friday, 13 April 2007 12:13 (eighteen years ago)

i hate fake dollar stores, where the stuff is not always $1 and there are more expensive things. latebloomer will understand - remember as a kid getting really excited about wilsons 5¢-$1 store and then finding out half the shit in there, while still crap, was like, $5 or more?

true story: my friend once found out she was knocked up from a dollar store pregnancy test. i don't know if the one she bought was next to the apricots, though...

i buy all my cleaning supplies at the 99¢ store! it's right on the way home! it's weird how everywhere else i've lived has called it 'dollar store' or some variation including the word 'dollar' but here everything is a 99¢ store.

tehresa, Friday, 13 April 2007 12:22 (eighteen years ago)

dollar store pregnancy test sounds like a writing exercise to begin a short story

Favorite chain = 99 Cent Dream, of which there was one in Jersey City! I bought Colgate toothpaste there once and only realized at home that the tube was all printed in CYRILLIC. I got Russkaya Mafiya goods!

Holy fuck, Vic, where IS that?

Laurel, Friday, 13 April 2007 15:20 (eighteen years ago)

some of those dollar store toothpastes have like crazy dangerous levels of flouride!!

and what, Friday, 13 April 2007 15:23 (eighteen years ago)

i went to a dollar store that had a big sign with rules and one was that they would beat you up if you shoplifted.

artdamages, Friday, 13 April 2007 15:29 (eighteen years ago)

laurel, i'm not sure where the photo was taken, but it auctioned for over 3 mil

Andreas Gursky - 99 Cent

sleep, Friday, 13 April 2007 15:33 (eighteen years ago)

Dollar store bacon wrapped filets - I have bought and eaten.

nickalicious, Friday, 13 April 2007 15:34 (eighteen years ago)

Musical instruments I have bought from same dollar store as steaks: kazoo, egg-shaker, plastic tambourine, harmonica (almost Bb).

nickalicious, Friday, 13 April 2007 15:36 (eighteen years ago)

haha I thought that said APEXCOTS

nickalicious, Friday, 13 April 2007 15:36 (eighteen years ago)

I think the Gursky auction set the price record for photos.

Everything I buy at 99-cent stores feels like it's leaving some kind of cancerous chemical residue on my skin.

Hurting 2, Friday, 13 April 2007 15:41 (eighteen years ago)

the best thing i got from a dollar store was the GARGOYLE'S MOVIE when i was maybe 12? also: outdated scrabbble dictionaries.

DOLLARSTORE!!!!!! needs to be the new otm/8080

and what, Saturday, 14 April 2007 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

i think DOLLARSTORE!!!! should be the new BOXCAR!!!!

tehresa, Saturday, 14 April 2007 18:13 (eighteen years ago)

i probably sound retarded asking this now, but i totally missed the boat on boxcar...what did it mean again?

it's re: that for better or for worse comic strip where the grandpa has gone senile or something ?? and shouts BOXCAR!!?#*C&% and every is somewhat freaked out but also kind of used to it. i am not explaining this well.

DOLLARSTORE!!!! is a good tourrettes word for sure

chinese workers not able to strike even if their life depends on it is blood dollarstore :( etc

Sébastien, Saturday, 14 April 2007 19:31 (eighteen years ago)

that is one of the ways dollarstores are gross to me
so if anyone's going to ask me to marry them, they have to make sure it's not with a blood dollarstore plastic flower ring even if it has sparkles and rainbows, i will have to decline

more reason for DOLLARSTORE!!!! to be BOXCAR*$#%-like

rrrobyn, Saturday, 14 April 2007 19:38 (eighteen years ago)

i've never been to a dollar tree, but i remember jody (i think) posting their logo once and i thought it was brilliant

latebloomer, Saturday, 14 April 2007 21:30 (eighteen years ago)

so great!

rrrobyn, Saturday, 14 April 2007 21:43 (eighteen years ago)

the dollarstore marmalade i bought turns out to be really good! and it is made in quebec and is not full of crap, basically sugar, oranges, pectin. and delicious citric acid. it has not hurt me! i am going to buy more before it disappears. i mean, $1 for jam!!

it is probably b/c i am so poor right now that i feel all this requires so many exclamation points.
but really, dollarstore!!!!

rrrobyn, Monday, 16 April 2007 00:15 (eighteen years ago)

i keep thinking of this when i see "dollarstore".

chicago kevin, Monday, 16 April 2007 13:02 (eighteen years ago)

they have dollar stores in england but it's not as satisfying an experience, because it's basically all the same shit, so now i feel like i'm just getting ripped of.

DOLLARSTORE!!!! is a good tourrettes word for sure

there was a woman with tourettes on my bus yesterday. She gave everyone the finger and then "humped the air" so to speak, it was ...mystical. She did not say DOLLARSTORE!!! though.

Every Dollar Tree in the city here has a large stash of this book:
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51T002P3N1L._SS500_.jpg
The supply has not gone down in at least five years. It's become a habit of mine to read a sentence or two every time I go. It's pretty funny. It's very bad.

my dad's favorite store is the dollar store. every time we go to a new part of town he always stops by at any dollar stores because inventory changes, you know?

xp family dollar is gross because oftentimes things are more than $1 at the family dollar

there is a pretty awesome one that i have to research the name of...dollar tree, maybe? it is probably the only one that i've ever been in where everything is for real a dollar. umbrellas, huge bags of experimental snack foods, name brand deodorants/toothpastes, etc.

a few weeks ago i was in one that had the most soul-crushingly depressing vibe of just about any store i've ever been in. it's tough to explain, but everything in there was sort of repulsive. merchandise, employees, shoppers. you know how some thrift stores are just super-depressing and not worth the effort of combing through stuff? it was like that, except twenty times worse. after exiting the place i felt like i wanted to immediately shower. i felt astrally contaminated or something, man.

weirdly enough there was a second dollar store at that shopping center which wasn't half-bad.

dude (del), Saturday, 2 October 2010 03:37 (fourteen years ago)

john water (harbl), Saturday, 2 October 2010 15:54 (fourteen years ago)

Family Dollar isn't even a dollar store. Most everything in it costs more than a dollar. It is totally depressing, though. It's like if Big Lots had to scale down in size, charm, and class.
