strongohulkington, Monday, 16 April 2007 21:10 (eighteen years ago)

I had a really bad leg of an acid trip once because of the cover of that Grace Jones record.

both covers were designed by Jean-Paul Goude, grace jones' husband at the time. he's got a new book out that i'm interested in looking at. here's a cool article on him http://arts.guardian.co.uk/image/0,,1672997,00.html

i think the new Feist cover is pretty influenced by these covers

i got closer to 100 records yesterday. a sampling from memory:

don cherry - brown rice
donald byrd - perspectives (i think)
roy ayers - i forget, but it was from the late seventies and has him in a cool dashiki or some shit
all the magazine albums plus a comp i think?
the house sound of london
3 808 state 12"s plus the Utd state album on tommy boy (which i already had on cd, but why not)
some ska, roots and danchall comps
a comp on luaka bop of congolese samba or something like that
an augustus pablo comp
sly and robbie presents taxi?
mx-80 sound - crowd control
human league greatest hits (possibly the best greatest hits EVER)
some DOA records
No Age - a comp of instumental music on SST
Phantom Tollbooth - whatever its called. the one robert pollard sang on top of and ruined.
another Big Dipper album!

etc

artdamages, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 14:12 (eighteen years ago)

i just saw a guy from the embarrasment was in big dipper. awesome. i've only heard one of their songs ever on a homestead comp.

artdamages, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 14:13 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah!! I have Heavens, which I like soo much, and some Dumptruck LPs that I haven't digitized yet. See also the Revelers, not that they're involved with BD but v similar aesthetic, sound, era.

Laurel, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 14:18 (eighteen years ago)

"All Going Out Together" is such a great pop song.

Laurel, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 14:21 (eighteen years ago)

i listened to great plains this weekend.

artdamages, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 14:24 (eighteen years ago)

is it hypocritical of me to like this stuff, but refuse to listen to 99% of indie rock made today? i don't think so.

artdamages, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 14:25 (eighteen years ago)

i didn't find any volcano suns though :(

i had the volcano scums cranked last night. bumper crop and all night lotus party. i really love the b side to bumper crop. someone i used to know called it "lumberjack rock" but i think it was meant as a compliment.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 14:25 (eighteen years ago)

i got a flesheaters album too. i forget the name, but it was very black. are they cool?

artdamages, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 14:28 (eighteen years ago)

i never really dug them, one more example of someone who can right rock criticism and columns but can't write rock songs.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 14:31 (eighteen years ago)
