He is a classically-trained multi-instrumentalist.
He likes a lot of Jazz and jazz books.
He likes The Boredoms but he thinks the drumming on VCN is "off".
He doesn't like musical eclecticism.
He's just getting into dubstep.
He thinks that Pole are boring.

The only reason I am posting this here is to generate reaction to the Boredoms thing. But give suggestions too!

admrl, Friday, 20 April 2007 22:49 (eighteen years ago)

He likes anything Eastern European!
And he likes Tago Mago (or, he did a few years ago).

admrl, Friday, 20 April 2007 22:50 (eighteen years ago)

He has hated nearly everything I have ever got him or taped him. It's tough.

admrl, Friday, 20 April 2007 22:52 (eighteen years ago)

I thought that maybe he might like The Necks? or Neu!?

admrl, Friday, 20 April 2007 22:52 (eighteen years ago)

hey adam

Iva Bittova's 'Superchameleon' DVD: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=132170551

there's one copy left in Ameoba SF's experimental DVD section. but you aren't local anymore, ARE you

Milton Parker, Friday, 20 April 2007 22:55 (eighteen years ago)

I am! Thanks! I might look for that.

admrl, Friday, 20 April 2007 22:55 (eighteen years ago)

Actually Milton, you might be well-placed to know the kind of things he might like. He also asked for something "electronic" but I don't really know what he means.

admrl, Friday, 20 April 2007 22:57 (eighteen years ago)

I think he wants whatever he expected Pole to sound like.

Now I wish I knew what that was.

admrl, Friday, 20 April 2007 22:57 (eighteen years ago)

i think neu! is a good idea

rrrobyn, Friday, 20 April 2007 22:59 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, he likes John Fahey too, which has nothing to do with anything, I'm just rtying to paint a picture here.

admrl, Friday, 20 April 2007 22:59 (eighteen years ago)

Actually, that DVD looks perfect but I'm not sure he even has a DVD player. He's something of a stubborn luddite.

admrl, Friday, 20 April 2007 22:59 (eighteen years ago)

Neu would be good, I don't know if he knows Neu or not. He's more of a musician/theorist than a "music nerd" so there are definitely some holes in his knowledge/collection.

he likes Sun Ra, too. I just remembered. But he hated Pharoah Sanders when I sent him some. Too "free". But he does like some improv. It's complicated.

admrl, Friday, 20 April 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

it sounds complicated! I hate friends

well if you don't get that DVD soon I'll bet dleone's going to make a run for it the second he reads this thread

Milton Parker, Friday, 20 April 2007 23:07 (eighteen years ago)

I think he secretly just likes pop music. Isn't that what always happens to such people?

admrl, Friday, 20 April 2007 23:10 (eighteen years ago)

Get him the planet earth dvds. No one can resist that shit, it's like the fucking borg.

The Macallan 18 Year, Friday, 20 April 2007 23:11 (eighteen years ago)

Can't do DVDs!

admrl, Friday, 20 April 2007 23:12 (eighteen years ago)

He likes video games, I think he got a Wii.

admrl, Friday, 20 April 2007 23:12 (eighteen years ago)

When we were teenagers, I got him a dartboard and he has never forgiven me for it! I thought it was a reasonable enough gift.

admrl, Friday, 20 April 2007 23:13 (eighteen years ago)

This was in britain, by the way. We REALLY like darts.

admrl, Friday, 20 April 2007 23:14 (eighteen years ago)

would he like something like Six Organs of Admittance?

rrrobyn, Friday, 20 April 2007 23:15 (eighteen years ago)

He thinks that Pole are boring.

so do i! get him the basic channel cd. or robbie basho

am0n, Friday, 20 April 2007 23:16 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, these are all food for thought. I guess it depends on what I can find in Amoeba after work.

admrl, Friday, 20 April 2007 23:17 (eighteen years ago)

faust box

am0n, Friday, 20 April 2007 23:21 (eighteen years ago)

I thought about it. I think Faust aren't rigid enough for him. I wish I could get him to like Faust though.

admrl, Friday, 20 April 2007 23:22 (eighteen years ago)

Pole 1 is the only half-decent one and it kind of needs to be really loud before it works. Pan Sonic's Vakio, Porter Ricks Biokinetics, RIOU's To To 12", those are how I want to remember early glitchy times

this will be a typical milton thing to say, but Amoeba SF also has Shiina Ringo's Karuki Zamen Kuri No Hana, which is pop for people who like jazz books and the cover looks like this

Milton Parker, Friday, 20 April 2007 23:23 (eighteen years ago)

POP FOR PEOPLE WHO LIKE JAZZ BOOKS

admrl, Friday, 20 April 2007 23:28 (eighteen years ago)

yes, that's what goes on the card

Milton Parker, Friday, 20 April 2007 23:33 (eighteen years ago)

I got him a little girl's birthday card, you know, to be funny.

admrl, Friday, 20 April 2007 23:34 (eighteen years ago)

"sister... and friend"

Milton Parker, Friday, 20 April 2007 23:35 (eighteen years ago)

I just posted to the 'Macca Albums' ILM thread

Milton Parker, Friday, 20 April 2007 23:44 (eighteen years ago)

& earlier I think I posted a Soylent Green joke to the gun control thread

I sure hope it's friday

Milton Parker, Friday, 20 April 2007 23:50 (eighteen years ago)

MAGMA!

jaxon, Saturday, 21 April 2007 02:36 (eighteen years ago)

except it's a bit eclectic. but it's got classical motifs, jazz, drumming, not boring.

jaxon, Saturday, 21 April 2007 02:36 (eighteen years ago)

thanks!

admrl, Saturday, 21 April 2007 02:39 (eighteen years ago)

get him something by sun-ra or cluster

creme1, Saturday, 21 April 2007 02:39 (eighteen years ago)

cluster are rigid and jazzy and electronic

creme1, Saturday, 21 April 2007 02:41 (eighteen years ago)

sorry not that i know you or anything. but they are good.

creme1, Saturday, 21 April 2007 02:42 (eighteen years ago)

re: the Pole thing - get him a Vladislav Delay record on Chain Reaction, dude used to be a jazz drummer.

Jena, Saturday, 21 April 2007 02:45 (eighteen years ago)

Jean-Claude Vannier - L'Enfant Assasin des Mouches

bobby bedelia, Saturday, 21 April 2007 04:43 (eighteen years ago)

you don't have to "know" me, creme1. But yes, Cluster are good and worthy of consideration here.
