i did own the boxed set. totally sold on amazon for like $40.
i like their dronier material more than than the shambolic/inept stuff.

ian, Thursday, 26 April 2007 04:00 (eighteen years ago)

one of my favorite 7" sleeves ever is an alan licht single with a plain white sleeve with black block lettering that says "Calvin Johnson Has Ruined Rock For An Entire Generation."

ian, Thursday, 26 April 2007 04:03 (eighteen years ago)

ok. we'll come back, for indian summer. go our separate way.

bell_labs, Thursday, 26 April 2007 04:42 (eighteen years ago)

7 deadly sins and you......i got a crush on you, i got a crush on you, you won't let me through, i got a crush on you

bell_labs, Thursday, 26 April 2007 04:50 (eighteen years ago)

you stay up every night, awash in candlelight

see a man on the street, you wash his tired feet

you wanna rest your head, you make a bed.
you're a godsend
godsend

see a tear in your eye, you don't know why
you're a godsend

ian, Thursday, 26 April 2007 05:06 (eighteen years ago)

i skipped this chapter in This Band Could blah blah blah

...have i mentioned this?

river wolf, Thursday, 26 April 2007 05:06 (eighteen years ago)

just download that one and yer set.

ian, Thursday, 26 April 2007 05:07 (eighteen years ago)

indian summer's pretty classic

also eugenius version

how do noize board feel about the vaselines

dmr, Thursday, 26 April 2007 05:22 (eighteen years ago)

pretty big fan of BH, in spite of myself (and Calvin)

I remember when "You Turn Me On" came out and it was like woah, didn't know they had that in em

Stormy Davis, Thursday, 26 April 2007 05:27 (eighteen years ago)

(Vaselines rule of course but I voted Groovy Little Numbers on the 53rd and 3rd poll)

Stormy Davis, Thursday, 26 April 2007 05:28 (eighteen years ago)

growing up and then going to university in the pacific northwest in the 90s, i was pretty much obligated to like beat happening for a while. and it felt good at the time. c johnson kinda makes me cringe though. haven't listened to them in forever, except for indian summer, which somehow remains one of my favourite songs and i'm just not gonna question that.

rrrobyn, Thursday, 26 April 2007 06:22 (eighteen years ago)

if beat happening came along now they would be hailed as garage superstars. as it is they played some amazing pop songs and i could listen to black candy for years on end and never get sick of it.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 26 April 2007 06:24 (eighteen years ago)

i like 'em.

latebloomer, Thursday, 26 April 2007 08:18 (eighteen years ago)

i find calvin pretty vile but 'tiger trap' + the heather-voc trax on 'you turn me on' = amazing

electricsound, Thursday, 26 April 2007 08:31 (eighteen years ago)

i never want to hear calvin's voice again, but i'm glad i saw them when i did because the melvins played next

jergïns, Thursday, 26 April 2007 10:01 (eighteen years ago)

everyone OTM. i sold my beat happening box too. maybe someday i'll pick up you turn me on again because that record is a godsend.

artdamages, Thursday, 26 April 2007 13:48 (eighteen years ago)

calvin is a crepe but there is def some great BH

ghost rider, Thursday, 26 April 2007 13:49 (eighteen years ago)

never found the entry point, gave up trying.

Edward III, Thursday, 26 April 2007 13:52 (eighteen years ago)

that last record=very very good. godsend, tiger trap, turn me on dead man? bury the hammer? man, all the crazy tangled guitar hits.

Mr. Que, Thursday, 26 April 2007 13:53 (eighteen years ago)

The one time I saw them live (opening for Fugazi), I never stoppped laughing at his dancing. ie, AWESOME

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 26 April 2007 14:31 (eighteen years ago)

Catsupppppppppppppp dude ‫茄蕃‪, Thursday, 26 April 2007 14:39 (eighteen years ago)

bell_labs, Thursday, 26 April 2007 14:43 (eighteen years ago)

dude likes the young stuff.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 26 April 2007 14:46 (eighteen years ago)

i skipped this chapter in This Band Could blah blah blah

a lot of it is about pajama parties and perving on girls with tight sweaters

lol xpost knew that one was coming

dmr, Thursday, 26 April 2007 14:48 (eighteen years ago)

yah calvin is a crepe for sure.

bell_labs, Thursday, 26 April 2007 14:50 (eighteen years ago)

T/S DJ Calvin vs. DJ Ian

Catsupppppppppppppp dude ‫茄蕃‪, Thursday, 26 April 2007 14:52 (eighteen years ago)

I never saw BH

saw Dub Narcotic Sound System tho

not so good ... altho I prolly liked it at the time

I bet Mr. Que ws at that show

dmr, Thursday, 26 April 2007 14:54 (eighteen years ago)

at the Chez?

Mr. Que, Thursday, 26 April 2007 14:55 (eighteen years ago)

do you remember he made a joke about some kind of braided rug that said The Chez on it? he covered up the z and made some dumb Che Guevera joke. not funny.

Mr. Que, Thursday, 26 April 2007 14:55 (eighteen years ago)

yeah that coffee joint
I did not remember Che(z) joeks though
but I think he had on flannel pj's and a wool hat ... in the summer

dmr, Thursday, 26 April 2007 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

i was in a beat happening cover band in college. my friend arranged the songs to have bass parts for me. i wasn't super into the idea, but she was adamant about it. we lived together and thus i was a part of every half-baked musical notion she came up with.

lauren, Thursday, 26 April 2007 14:59 (eighteen years ago)

i remember the hat, it was stupid. i saw him talking on the pay phone outside of the Kwik Pantry across the street, wearing the hat in, like, june.

Mr. Que, Thursday, 26 April 2007 14:59 (eighteen years ago)

herpz & creepz are suddenly relevant to band love, omg

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 26 April 2007 15:00 (eighteen years ago)

i'm glad i'm not stuck with her
she's got a bad habit of being pure

i dont mind a touch of it here and there..but had a tough go trying to review the box...there is a very certain greatness about the ease and the refreshing openness of it..but that all can go down that annoyingly selfloving, woody allen-ish support of things you might want to be more adult about and probably lead to some of the more prescious and loathsome modern indie rock

but hey, you cant fault a guy for other people's bad ideas, now, can you?

bb, Thursday, 26 April 2007 15:02 (eighteen years ago)

any band that can come up with cast a shadow can not be hated by me. it forgives almost any future transgression.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 26 April 2007 15:05 (eighteen years ago)

oh yeah, cast a shadow was a jam too.

ian, Thursday, 26 April 2007 15:11 (eighteen years ago)

herpz & creepz are suddenly relevant to band love, omg

Catsupppppppppppppp dude ‫茄蕃‪, Thursday, 26 April 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

i always thought Beat Happening was like Hal Hartley Movies.

Beat Happening is really good for mixtapes.

Yerac, Thursday, 26 April 2007 16:02 (eighteen years ago)

dude was rude to our own gygax and that makes him shitburgers in my book.

but they're high moments are notably high.

i've always had a thing for that 50s rebel style aesthetic that k plugged into as well.

deeznuts, Friday, 27 April 2007 05:43 (eighteen years ago)
