but, win or lose, bush will still get around 50% of the votes?

david acid (gareth), Sunday, 5 September 2004 10:10 (twenty years ago)

you know this is the noise board, right?

cutty (mcutt), Sunday, 5 September 2004 13:19 (twenty years ago)

that is correct

david acid (gareth), Sunday, 5 September 2004 13:40 (twenty years ago)

Hey David "Acid" -- I don't believe you've ever taken acid in your life. If you did, you would discover a window into your soul. You would discover the shittiness of 90% of the music you like. Tell me, David "Acid", do you own a single Captain Beefheart record? Do you own a single White Heaven record? Do you own a single Quicksilver Messenger Sevice record? DO YOU OWN AN OTIS RUSH RECORD???? Of course you don't. You're a "dance music guy". I hate "dance music guys". They don't know shit about shit. Fuck 'em all.

Reed Moore (diamond), Sunday, 5 September 2004 16:42 (twenty years ago)

my favorite is tropical hot dog night, but i am more of a marcos valle or charles mingus man than a beefheart one, that is correct. i don't own any quicksilver messenger service records, i think they are poor compared to chocolate watch band and the seeds, myself, who are much more my kind of thing, along with the wcpaeb, of course. i don't like otis rush particularly either, joe clay is more to my liking, though, of course, i may well be in the minority on that one:) as for acid, you guessed wrong, but, that is ok, it was a reasonable stab in the dark, you had a 50% chance, i guess, rather like the upcoming elections in a way, wouldnt you say?

david acid (gareth), Sunday, 5 September 2004 17:24 (twenty years ago)

Reed kicking back and relaxing, free from the watchful eyes of ILM.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 5 September 2004 17:27 (twenty years ago)

Who is hiding from anything??? I always say exactly what I mean, 100% of the time. No matter which sphere of ILX I happen to inhabit. Haven't you seen my drunken incoherent rants blasting your beloved hero Reynolds on ILM?? Though, it is indeed true that I like the Noise Board because it carries less of a chance of encountering British people and their AWFUL taste.

BTW, Ronan I've always liked you. For what it's worth. I think you are really funny. And a very good writer. And not overly British in your comportment, thank fucking christ. Unlike david "acid"

Reed Moore (diamond), Sunday, 5 September 2004 17:45 (twenty years ago)

i like ronan too, hes good, isnt he? hes irish though, not british

david acid (gareth), Sunday, 5 September 2004 17:57 (twenty years ago)

although, reed raises an interesting point regarding linking musical taste to political leanings, but i'm sure that is a separate thread. are you one of the bush voters, reed?

david acid (gareth), Sunday, 5 September 2004 18:06 (twenty years ago)

Nope, I hate him with a passion. He is an evil, evil man. One of my first thoughts on september 11 was that he engineered the thing. I didn't need Michael fucking Moore to tell me that, it was as plain as day.

I like all kinds of music though. That's what separates me from Reynoldsites such as yourself. I own the complete works of Clifford Brown and Stan Kenton and the White Stripes and Syl Johnson, as well as Basement Jaxx AND Daft Punk records. Could a Reynoldsite say the same?

Anyway, I'm just joking about the whole British thing. Honestly. It's just an act. Where would I be without Kevin Coyne, Keith Rowe, Syd Barrett, Evan Parker, Larry Wallis, Lol Coxhill, Davey Graham, John Martyn, Mark Hollis, Mike Paradinas, Tony Iommi, Robert Wyatt, Steve Howe, Anne Briggs, Joe Harriott, Derek Bailey, Richard Thompson, Sean Booth, Rob Brown, Pete Townshend, Bridget St. John, Mark E. Smith, John Stevens, Kevin Ayers, Shirley Collins, Bill Steer, Peter Hammill, Richard James, Eddie Prevost, Steve Winwood, Wizz Jones, and all the rest?? Not to mention Raymond Williams, A.R. Radcliffe-Brown, Edmund Leach, E.E. Evans-Pritchard ... they are all big heros of mine. Without them, my life would be infinitely more boring and lonely indeed.

Why, I'll have you know I am listening to OMD at this very moment. Architecture and Morality, one of the greatest recordings in human history.

Reed Moore (diamond), Sunday, 5 September 2004 18:35 (twenty years ago)

i have no idea what a reynoldsite would say, that is not of any particular interest to me, at this point. im not sure what michael moore has to do with anything either. i am also sorry that you think my taste is shit, although, remarkably it doesnt seem very different to yours, at this moment in time. in fact, i am curious as to why you seem to have taken a distate towards me, or what this list of music has to do with my question. perhaps it is something to do with previous posts of mine, or the fact that i am a "dance music guy", although, of course, that is mere conjecture on my part.

at any rate, i hope your apparent distate for me, for whatever reason, does not cloud what i believe to be a valid thread. i am uncertain for the reasons for your ire in your first post, and, if honest, slightly confused by it, but i apologize, for my seemingly overly british comportment (although i am by no means a patriot, i have no use for that term), or for whatever it is that has made you attack me in such a way (valid though that attack might possibly be)

so, to the question at hand?

david acid (gareth), Sunday, 5 September 2004 21:41 (twenty years ago)

(normally, as may, or may not, be obvious, i do not acknowledge personal attacks upon myself, as they serve no purpose, and are not of any particular interest or consequence, but, in this instance, i do admit a personal curiosity, as it is a rare case that someone takes such a strong side against me, and without, as far as i can see, any particular motivation. perhaps curiosity can be the death of us all, at times. a weakness, i acknowledge)

david acid (gareth), Sunday, 5 September 2004 21:54 (twenty years ago)

Reed, as always, when your spring is wound up (i.e. alcohol), you are a raconteur par excellant.

jack cole (jackcole), Sunday, 5 September 2004 23:29 (twenty years ago)

also, please cue Lou Reed's "Disco Mystic".

jack cole (jackcole), Sunday, 5 September 2004 23:31 (twenty years ago)

I like Simon Reynolds.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 6 September 2004 01:55 (twenty years ago)

He's a good -- not great -- writer. Who receives way too much attention. More importantly, he's a trendmonger. Hence, no hero of mine.

Anyway, Gareth, I've got nothing against you outside of the trollish nature of this particular thread! (well, OK, the comma thing is incredibly irritating. but you know that.) We all hate Bush. That's a given. WHy start this thread on the noise board? The reason why is that you are aware that Brit-bashing has become a humorous meme, of course. And you tried to put a sort of mirror to that, it seems. So I merely met you in kind. You know how this internet thing works, these are but words. Were we to meet in person, I am positive we would get along swimmingly.

Reed Moore (diamond), Monday, 6 September 2004 02:27 (twenty years ago)

of course, i get on with everyone swimmingly that i have met, as all the many noise dudey people here that i have met will attest. i am not particularly aware of any brit-bashing, other than that which dots the internet from time to time, and it isn't something which i am particularly bothered about, as i am not a patriot of any kind.

the reason i asked the question on this board, is because this question, phrased this way, isn't of any particular use on ile, i wanted to place it in a more patriotic environs, where it would get a different response (although, admittedly, the responses i have got, so far, have been different again from what i imagined).

i have seen the american people described as a great people, on this very board. a) i am unsure about the aesthetics of describing a population of any country as great, and b) im not sure how that tallies in with a person such as bush getting the percentage of the vote he will get. especially now, the first time around was different, everyone makes mistakes. ie, in a democracy i dont understand how the population can be exempt from the choices it makes

under these circumstances i think here is a reasonably place to pose the question, and certainly didn't think there were any unspoken parameters about subject matter here

your friend, david acid (gareth), Monday, 6 September 2004 05:43 (twenty years ago)

but, misunderstanding or not, i'm glad you responded, and took the time, unlike one of those small ones that holds the coat at the side and applauds, but doesnt have anything to say themselves

your friend, david acid (gareth), Monday, 6 September 2004 05:47 (twenty years ago)

what is there to say, really, in response to your inquiry? i know for myself, i just don't have the energy to even want to deal with it -- i mean, why the hell would I after a week of work with unsubtle knee-jerks? also, these are more patriotic environs? i'd be interested to know what your definition of "patriotism" is gareth. i haven't seen uncle sam and yankie doodle and his macaroni around here in the slightest -- unless by "patriotism" you mean, mostly 'mericans post here -- but that's a pretty weak interpretation of what "patriotism" means. also, the USA is not a democracy -- it's a republic.

love,
jc

White heaven?! c'mon, 'mellow out' is kinda overrated really.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 6 September 2004 08:12 (twenty years ago)

At least Simon Reynolds' has decent social skills and manners unlike some higly feted rock critics I won't name.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 6 September 2004 20:50 (twenty years ago)

Telling gareth he's probably never done acid is very very funny.

yea, myspace is interesting, because of young-republican bent, ive seen a lot of sort of campaigny profiles on myspace, mainly sort of pro-bush ones, or anti-liberal defined or whatever, but also, the "white people only" group, and some others. what interests me, is you'll get these cutesy 19 year old girls, who are like,

music: the postal service, nick drake, belle and sebastian
general: fuck welfare, bomb syria, kill the fags
moves: amelie, the wizard of oz

i love that!

David, it's important to remember that America is, relatively speaking, pretty big. Not as big as China, but a lot bigger then Great Britain.
