QUESTIONS FOR RECORD NERDS

So we don't have all the record talk on one thread::::

WHERE DO I FILE:
a. Excepter: Pop or avant garde?
b. Fahey; Pop or 20th century composition? (the latter being a different shelf than "avant garde," which is mostly improvised music.)
c. Borbetomagus: jazz or avant garde? (Same question applies for Kark.)
d. pre-war jazz: with pe-war country/blues or with LP-era jazz?

ian, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:13 (eighteen years ago)

I have this same problem with my cereals.

admrl, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:14 (eighteen years ago)

WTF "pop" secion

BACK TO ILM WITH U

Catsupppppppppppppp dude ‫茄蕃‪, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:15 (eighteen years ago)

Also, I have thought about making a section for virtuoso acoustic guitar instrumentalists, but where does this leave me with Sandy Bull's "Demolition Derby" and the vocal Basho records?

Do I file Charalambides side projects (solo records, duo improvs and the like) with the Charalambides section or in the avant garde section? What about the Bruce Russell LP? What about The Shadow Ring? Right now they are in with the pop LPs.

ian, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:16 (eighteen years ago)

if you don't actually file, say, charalambides side projects with charalambides, there should be pointers

river wolf, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:17 (eighteen years ago)

also, jon, by pop i mean the rock, country, soul, hip hop etc that makes up the bulk of my record collection.

do i put exploito "middle eastern belly dance" LPs with international music or with jazz?

ian, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:17 (eighteen years ago)

everything alphabetical except for reggae and dance 12s

sexyDancer, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:18 (eighteen years ago)

^^^^ yeah

river wolf, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:19 (eighteen years ago)

also, i don't really have enough reggae for it to be its own section so i have been filing it with the rock records so that sounds weird to me.

ian, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:19 (eighteen years ago)

the one halfway-decent store in town has all these stupid genre ghettos, so it's impossible to find basically anything

i tried to buy Drums Not Dead and they had it filed under punk??

xp oh wait this is for your PERSONAL collection? just alphabetize, dude, srsly

river wolf, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:20 (eighteen years ago)

reggae gets its special section cuz it's the only genre I'm into in which the artist doesn't matter as much as the genre

sexyDancer, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:23 (eighteen years ago)

it is hard to "just alphabetize" international records with other records.

ian, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:27 (eighteen years ago)

traditionally all of my records have been organized alphabetically but it became problematic when i ran out of shelf space and they began spilling out onto the floor in little stacks and piles anyway. also, i like having all of my hillybilly string band shit in one place--why have the "Red Fox Chasers" next to some rock records yet have a whole stash of v/a pre-war country shit at the end in the VARIOUS ARTISTS GHETTO?

ian, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:29 (eighteen years ago)

haha

admrl, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:31 (eighteen years ago)

truth be told I have a stack of old-timey/ethno-world next to the boredoms and the jandek, but that's stuff all cds.

sexyDancer, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:31 (eighteen years ago)

i once had the belief that there were only three kinds of music:
popular music
art music
and folk music.

but that's not a very good classification system either.

ian, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:32 (eighteen years ago)

WHERE TO FILE "UNESCO COLLECTION MUSIC OF TIBET VOLUMES 1-3"!?!? filing it with compilations seems to marginalize.

ian, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:32 (eighteen years ago)

surf music >>>>>> jimi hendrix

Steve Shasta, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:36 (eighteen years ago)

at least i'm not like some people, who divide up their rock records by decade.

ian, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:36 (eighteen years ago)

PEOPLE WITH A "PUNK" SECTION: CLASSIC OR DUD?

ian, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:37 (eighteen years ago)

am I the only one here that owns fewer than 20 pieces of vinyl in any form? :-[

BLASTOCYST, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:37 (eighteen years ago)

doubtful.

ian, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:37 (eighteen years ago)

i don't think laurel has a lot of records. maybe more than 20 though :(

ian, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:38 (eighteen years ago)

^______^

BLASTOCYST, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:38 (eighteen years ago)

i own no vinyl

deeznuts, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:38 (eighteen years ago)

im not at all proud of it though & still consider you pathetic blastocyst

deeznuts, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:39 (eighteen years ago)

i vote for everything alpha

Mr. Que, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:41 (eighteen years ago)

ok

BLASTOCYST, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:41 (eighteen years ago)

but guys you are not helping me figure out how to integrate things like "20 Ballads of the Southern Mountains" and those LPs with three composers on them (like "Electronic Music" by Maxfield/Oliveros/Reich) and also various artist field recordings like "Songs of the Dessert" on Lyrichord.

ian, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:44 (eighteen years ago)

do a v/a section at the end

Mr. Que, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:44 (eighteen years ago)

All things should be categorized alphabetically by the last name of their creator.

BLASTOCYST, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:46 (eighteen years ago)

that's gonna be one big and varied VA section, so why not split it into individual boxes anyway? I mean, you know. And why not file single artist old-timey or modern composition LPs with the V/A of the same genre?

ian, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:46 (eighteen years ago)

WHERE DO I FILE:
a. Excepter: Pop or avant garde?

no

b. Fahey; Pop or 20th century composition? (the latter being a different shelf than "avant garde," which is mostly improvised music.)

20th c.

c. Borbetomagus: jazz or avant garde? (Same question applies for Kark.)

avant garden

d. pre-war jazz: with pe-war country/blues or with LP-era jazz?

jazz

am0n, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:46 (eighteen years ago)

LIBRARY SCIENCE DEGREE, WHERE ARE YOU NOW WHEN I NEED YOU HERE?

xpost:
amon has laid it out mostly the way i have it now, except excepter is in with avant stuff.

"except excepter"; i've neveralways wanted to say that.

ian, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:47 (eighteen years ago)

so do a v/a at the end of multiple composers and everything else alpha, otherwise you will drive yourself crazy with these kinds of questions:

b. Fahey; Pop or 20th century composition?

Mr. Que, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:47 (eighteen years ago)

i like these kinds of questions. they make me think.

ian, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:47 (eighteen years ago)

am I the only one here that owns fewer than 20 pieces of vinyl in any form? :-[

-- BLASTOCYST, Monday, May 7, 2007 6:37 PM (8 minutes ago)

me 2 :-D

am0n, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:48 (eighteen years ago)

what's vinyl

admrl, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:48 (eighteen years ago)

oh well if you like those kinds of questions, then keep it the way you have, you sound like you're on the right track.

Mr. Que, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:48 (eighteen years ago)

space hog

BLASTOCYST, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:49 (eighteen years ago)

Captain Beefhart? B or C?
Bo Diddley? B or D?
Little Richard? L or R?

anyway back to orig post: file 3xc3pt3r on record player

(we actually told other music to file in "in")

sexyDancer, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:50 (eighteen years ago)

spacehog should be taken to the used record store and sold for 35 cents

Mr. Que, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:50 (eighteen years ago)

Hah, me 3, I might have just around 20 but not more.

Laurel, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:50 (eighteen years ago)

C
D
L

BLASTOCYST, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:50 (eighteen years ago)

Captain Beefhart? B or C?

B

Bo Diddley? B or D?

D

Little Richard? L or R?

R

Mr. Que, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:51 (eighteen years ago)

isn't Richard his first name, though?
Little is a title.

sexyDancer, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:52 (eighteen years ago)

C
.....??gaasdhfsdh?
L

am0n, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:52 (eighteen years ago)

maybe I'm not the best to ask. I file Thee Headcoats under T

Mr. Que, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:53 (eighteen years ago)

C, B, L for me anyway cuz of "nicknames" rule.

sexyDancer, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:54 (eighteen years ago)

I have it as C, D, and L.

ian, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:58 (eighteen years ago)

wau

dmr, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 14:45 (eighteen years ago)

Drop me in the ocean of your love

sexyDancer, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 14:49 (eighteen years ago)

I have an ikea expedit shelf for my dance stuff, each "cube" basically a crate of a certain genre:

2 for New Wave Dance (incl post-punk that I'd play at a dance party)
1 for NY Club Classics
2 for Disco
1 for Italo
1 for Hi-NRG
1 for electro-funk/freestyle
2 for hip-hop
2 for Chicago House/NY House/Detroit Techno
1 for newer stuff like Environ, Balihu, DFA, I-F etc

the bottom ones are filled with crap

on top of that I have some racks holding most of my "new" releases/latest purchases and another rack filled with stuff for some mixed I want to do.

Then I have a big custom shelf filled with everything else, that was in alphabetical order untill I moved, and now is the bane of my existance. At least untill I organize it.

Then I have some crates on the floor, 1 is filled with all the compilations. 1 is just random dance stuff I didn't have room for, and one is just random other stuff I didn't have room for.

My 7"s are mostly alphabetized in 4 bags unlimited boxes on top the second shelf, but the ones I listen to the most and dj with are in little boxes scattered around.

My CDs are mostly alphabatized on a shelf in the back of a closet.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

ian, (or anyone else), what does the store do to destinkify things that come in, like a collection that has been bathing in 20 years of cigarette smoke and nag champa?

sanskrit, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 02:53 (eighteen years ago)

hm, missed this thread last week. Yeah, everything alphabetical. With V/A at the end by name of comp and then a section after that for international comps filed by country of origin. There is no other way to keep track of everything. but I do agree that Scott that it's fun to stumble upon records you forgot you had in one of the many "to be filed" piles that inevitably form.

I think the Capt Beefheart / Little Richard / Dr. John question is often more intriguing... but I always tend to default to the first word of the nickname.

Stormy Davis, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 03:23 (eighteen years ago)

I have decided to re-integrate my "avant garde" section in with the bulk of the LPs. i am still going to keep jazz & pre-war blues/hillybilly string bands separate. i am going to integrate reggae in with rock/soul/etc. i am going to integrate 20th century composition with my other boxes of classical records, once i dig them out of the closet. i am going to put fahey & basho & ackerman etc. in with the pop LPs (amon can feel free to argue with me about this. fahey just makes more sense between fairport and euphoria than rubbing elbows with jon gibson and pierre henry.

ian, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:16 (eighteen years ago)

this is all pending the arrival of expanded shelving later this week.

ian, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:19 (eighteen years ago)

questions for record nerds:
-if i have a stereo, and i get a mono, is the sensible thing to sell the stereo or just keep both? (moby grape s/t in this instance. with the early byrds records i have sold my stereos in favor of monos when possible, because that is some seriously crummy separation.)

ian, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:20 (eighteen years ago)

also, i am selling my US press of the kick inside cuz i got a cheap UK copy that has a better sleeve as well as a better label design.

ian, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:20 (eighteen years ago)

actually, you know what, i am just gonna put the US copy on the wall. oh, i love kate bush so much.

ian, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:22 (eighteen years ago)

is the sensible thing to sell the stereo or just keep both?

depends on which ones you like and will listen to!

Tim Ellison, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:30 (eighteen years ago)

i have a mono of 1st vanilla fudge and wish i had the stereo, actually.

i would like sgt. pepper and white album and piper at gates of dawn in mono.

Tim Ellison, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:35 (eighteen years ago)

in which cases, i would keep both.

Tim Ellison, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:36 (eighteen years ago)

stereo/mono is completely a case by case basis. did they record a stereo and mono version of the album? is it true stereo? plus, some records are really hard to find in stereo and some are really hard to find in mono. sometimes they can both sound great.

scott seward, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:38 (eighteen years ago)

sgt pepper monos aren't that hard to find.
and there was a boot of piper in mono that was around for a while last year. xposst

ian, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:39 (eighteen years ago)

sgt pepper is the most famous example probably of a record sounding really different in stereo/mono. piper too actually. they both sound good though. first doors album sounds really cool in both mono/stereo. and different. i have a nice mono copy of surrealistic pillow that sounds really cool.

scott seward, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:42 (eighteen years ago)

elevators monos sound amazing.

ian, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:43 (eighteen years ago)

i think of the ones i have, the biggest difference is maybe 5th dimension.

ian, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:43 (eighteen years ago)

you definitely need easter everywhere in mono. and psychedelic sounds.

ha! x-post

scott seward, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:44 (eighteen years ago)

soooo expensive, though. i have heard them but do not own.

ian, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:46 (eighteen years ago)

i have vinyl reissues that are in mono.

scott seward, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:47 (eighteen years ago)

i have the shitty red vinyl get back pressings. that shows you that i have no cred whatsoever e_e;

ian, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:48 (eighteen years ago)

i only have 5-D in mono. do you like the stereo better?

Tim Ellison, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:49 (eighteen years ago)

it's fun to find later 60's stuff - mostly promo/radio copies - in mono. there is some seriously common stuff that can go for good money in mono.

scott seward, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:49 (eighteen years ago)

no no no, the monos all sound a lot better on the byrds records i think.

ian, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:49 (eighteen years ago)

some stuff, honestly, i don't hear big differences. i think i have most early byrds in mono. but i don't own stereo copies anymore so i can't compare!

scott seward, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:51 (eighteen years ago)

there are still one or two paul revere & the raiders records that i need in mono. but i can't remember which ones.

scott seward, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:51 (eighteen years ago)

they're pretty strictly rhythm section in one channel and guitar/vox in the other, IIRC. makes for awful headphone listening. xp

paul revere & the raiders: where to begin? a hits comp?

ian, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:52 (eighteen years ago)

most horrible fake stereo i have heard would have to be some of the u.s. stones albums.

scott seward, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:52 (eighteen years ago)

buy a mono copy of Revolution! or Midnight Ride. I like it all pretty much.

scott seward, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:54 (eighteen years ago)

(My copy of piper is part of a russian twofer that combines it with saucerful of secrets. piper belongs on the list of "classic records i don't listen to as much as i should.)

xpost
i think the only stones records i have are US, and i dunno if any of them are mono except my between the buttons (first stones record i bought, on thayer street in providence RI for a dollar at age 15.)

ian, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:56 (eighteen years ago)

Or The Spirit of '67. i love that album so much.

scott seward, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:56 (eighteen years ago)

most horrible fake stereo i have heard would have to be some of the u.s. stones albums.

worse yet is the singles tracks on Beatles '65.

Tim Ellison, Thursday, 17 May 2007 05:00 (eighteen years ago)

"I Feel Fine"/"She's a Woman," that is.

Tim Ellison, Thursday, 17 May 2007 05:01 (eighteen years ago)

ok, what about mono velvet underground and nico? satanic majesties?

Tim Ellison, Thursday, 17 May 2007 05:01 (eighteen years ago)

mono VU repress is readily available, though I admit i haven't bothered to listen to it. i have a crappy eighties press of VU & nico. i'm not even sure it has a gatefold.

ian, Thursday, 17 May 2007 05:03 (eighteen years ago)

i've never heard the mono v.u. i can't imagine that it sounds BETTER or anything. i dunno.

scott seward, Thursday, 17 May 2007 05:07 (eighteen years ago)

stereo / mono is one debate where I always have to drop out. I just never cared that much ... once I found a copy of something I'd been looking for, I'm just happy to have a nice orig on vinyl. Except for some of the really egregious bad stereo, yeah, I can see that (Fresh Cream comes to mind.)

Stormy Davis, Thursday, 17 May 2007 05:14 (eighteen years ago)

good example of what Scott was talking about re: common shizz on mono promos:

Stormy Davis, Thursday, 17 May 2007 05:15 (eighteen years ago)

speaking of ebay, i just scored the first Silver Apples for $9.

it was buried in a LOT OF 6 60s RECORDS, so i also got a dick hyman moog and buffalo springfield and other crap for free.

search by title and description is your friend people. tho i've probably had that search in my rss for almost 18 months now.

sanskrit, Saturday, 19 May 2007 16:37 (eighteen years ago)

one month passes...

this is not really a questions for record nerds, i just wanted to say how excited i am about this 10,000 piece jazz collection we just got in at the store. a lot of it is gonna go to the manhattan branch, but there's just so much. three copies of spiritual unity. about 15 sealed sun ra LPs. tons of ESP, actuel, etc. lots of private stuff. not to mention tons of gorgeous blue note, prestige, riverside etc.

and enough 20s/30s comps to keep me happy as a pig in shit for years.

ian, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 23:57 (eighteen years ago)

let's talk more about jazz records i should buy.

ian, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 23:57 (eighteen years ago)

wow. buy as much as you can afford. buy randomly. and gleefully. how good is your discount?

scott seward, Wednesday, 4 July 2007 03:40 (eighteen years ago)

i saw it being hauled in..

you guys get all the goods

sanskrit, Wednesday, 4 July 2007 04:13 (eighteen years ago)

srsly, not once but twice this spring/summer, once at bleecker st records whatever (not bleecker bob's) and the other time in academy east village i hear two totally different elderly women at the counter: "my husband has 10K records, would you please drive out to Ronkonkoma and give a fair price".

sanskrit, Wednesday, 4 July 2007 04:19 (eighteen years ago)

no doubt the profit margins are insane

sanskrit, Wednesday, 4 July 2007 04:20 (eighteen years ago)

on blue note:

buy everything by andrew hill, bobby hutcherson, jackie mclean.

on milestone:

theo monk's misterisoso w/johnny griffin on tenor

on prestige:

workin/steamin/relaxin/cookin w/the miles davis quintet. if you don't already have. these 4 lps are like the cornerstone of post-50s jazz.

plus so much more...
