bell_labs, Monday, 14 May 2007 23:28 (eighteen years ago)

1. oatmeal

bell_labs, Monday, 14 May 2007 23:29 (eighteen years ago)

2. crunchberries

jessie monster, Monday, 14 May 2007 23:31 (eighteen years ago)

crunchberries are not a savory food! i'm not entirely sure oatmeal is either; i would always add honey to my oatmeal. and milk.

ian, Monday, 14 May 2007 23:32 (eighteen years ago)

I savor crunchberries stop oppressing me.

jessie monster, Monday, 14 May 2007 23:34 (eighteen years ago)

right now I am thinking that hot sauce would make spaghetti-o's fucking awesome.

jessie monster, Monday, 14 May 2007 23:34 (eighteen years ago)

unsweetened oatmeal is at least neutral; maybe it shouldn't strictly be "savory" foods but unsweetened foods.

though some sweet things are good with hot sauce, like chocolate.

bell_labs, Monday, 14 May 2007 23:35 (eighteen years ago)

I have added marmite to oatmeal before. i put hot sauce on the following things: bagels, pizza, pasta, sandwiches, mexicans, cheese, omellettes etc etc.

Yerac, Monday, 14 May 2007 23:36 (eighteen years ago)

i thought about dipping a chocolate bar in salsa the other night.

i think i've been smoking too much :/

bell_labs, Monday, 14 May 2007 23:36 (eighteen years ago)

that is foul.

also, carey, where do you get your mexicans???

ian, Monday, 14 May 2007 23:37 (eighteen years ago)

i didn't actually go through with it! chocolate and chili are awesome together tho.

bell_labs, Monday, 14 May 2007 23:38 (eighteen years ago)

i make chili with coffee, sometimes.

ian, Monday, 14 May 2007 23:39 (eighteen years ago)

or dr. pepper.

ian, Monday, 14 May 2007 23:39 (eighteen years ago)

but never both.

ian, Monday, 14 May 2007 23:39 (eighteen years ago)

3. sweaters

bell_labs, Monday, 14 May 2007 23:40 (eighteen years ago)

i cannot even eat bagels anymore without hot sauce.

my mexicans!

Yerac, Monday, 14 May 2007 23:41 (eighteen years ago)

everything is improved by hot sauce!!
this is an impossible task, this thread!

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 00:59 (eighteen years ago)

i just ate some bread my landlady gave me and i ate it with butter and chipotle hot sauce. and i ate a carrot dipped in chipotle hot sauce. then i ate some mango but without hot sauce, which in retrospect should have had hot sauce.

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 01:00 (eighteen years ago)

mango + hot sauce = totally ace!

tehresa, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 01:01 (eighteen years ago)

Fish roasted with herbs
matzoh-ball soup
lox
a really good steak

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 01:04 (eighteen years ago)

with hot sauce

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 01:05 (eighteen years ago)

lox

I know for a fact this is OTM and I was devastated when I found out.

C0L1N B..., Tuesday, 15 May 2007 01:07 (eighteen years ago)

Also, there's "wouldn't be improved" and then there's "downright foul". Good steak and hot sauce is in the first category. Lox is in the second.

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 01:21 (eighteen years ago)

sushi

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 01:21 (eighteen years ago)

butternut squash

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 01:22 (eighteen years ago)

(not tested)

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 01:22 (eighteen years ago)

sushi? WASABI
butternut squash seems like a natural hot sauce candidate

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 01:23 (eighteen years ago)

xxxpost - aren't A1 (the hot variety) and wasabi negating your steak and sushi comments?

jaxon, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 01:24 (eighteen years ago)

Wasabi is not hot sauce!

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 01:58 (eighteen years ago)

Ok, maybe once you mix it with the soy it becomes, arguably, a form of hot sauce.

Steak is perfectly fine with hot sauce. I'm just saying a really good steak doesn't need it and is not really improved by it.

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 01:59 (eighteen years ago)

Waldorf salad

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 02:06 (eighteen years ago)

ambrosia

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 03:04 (eighteen years ago)

savory foods only!

also, ugh, ambrosia

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 03:05 (eighteen years ago)

I guess waldorf technically doesn't count b/c of pears.

Ok, so blue cheeses

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 03:13 (eighteen years ago)

there is no answer to this question!!

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 03:16 (eighteen years ago)

I just put hot sauce on my sandwich which had crumbles of blue cheese in it today.

Yerac, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 04:26 (eighteen years ago)

Ok, so blue cheeses

UH DUH I DONT WANT TO BE MEAN BUT HAVE YOU EVER BEEN TO BUFFALO

max, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 04:36 (eighteen years ago)

ok maybe im a little drunk

max, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 04:36 (eighteen years ago)

grapes
cheesecake
kimchi
butterscotch pudding

iiiijjjj, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 04:57 (eighteen years ago)

all kinds of sushi has sriracha on it, tho

river wolf, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 05:00 (eighteen years ago)

i mean, maybe not traditionally, but the spicy hamachi i had the other night was, uh, spicy for a reason

river wolf, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 05:05 (eighteen years ago)

phall/vindaloo/madras/jalfrezi, unless you have corroded your taste buds through vice

creme1, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 07:53 (eighteen years ago)

lasagne
tuna salad

m coleman, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 10:30 (eighteen years ago)

also all wrong answers

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 12:25 (eighteen years ago)

traditional turkey dinner may be a contender here

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 12:27 (eighteen years ago)

ham and cheese croissant

river wolf, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 12:33 (eighteen years ago)

I think most Ashkenazic Jewish food counts - it's just supposed to taste bland.

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 13:09 (eighteen years ago)

i would guess anything with mayo would probably not be a good pairing.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 13:21 (eighteen years ago)

waht? no. mayo & hotsauce = classic

lox is maybe the right answer

bell_labs, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 13:25 (eighteen years ago)

yeah I was gonna put smoked salmon/whitefish etc

curry is good w/mayo

m coleman, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 13:26 (eighteen years ago)

spicy peanut sauce. it's delicious!

lauren, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 20:53 (eighteen years ago)

peanut sauce and peanut butter aren't the same thing though.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 20:58 (eighteen years ago)

kevin, just heat the peanut butter up a bit, it's easier to mix then!

peanut butter + sriracha + soy sauce = spicy peanut sauce, more or less

bell_labs, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 21:03 (eighteen years ago)

will that work??!?!? cause i'm kinda really interested in a peanutbutter/hot sauce sandwich.

i'll do w/o the soy though, too salty.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 21:06 (eighteen years ago)

i've spent pretty much the last half hour reading restaurant reviews for places within biking distance of my house and i am so fucking hungry now it's insane. instead i'm going to go home and make mac 'n' cheese and maybe twice baked potatoes (depending how early i start making dinner). what i really want is brunch, complete with screwdrivers and mimosas and lots of coffee.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 21:10 (eighteen years ago)

I'm curious where popcorn falls on the improved by/ruined by hot sauce divide.

nickalicious, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 21:12 (eighteen years ago)

Ian and I used to use something like that to make cheapo spicy pb ramen

Catsupppppppppppppp dude ‫茄蕃‪, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 21:14 (eighteen years ago)

Dude I put hot sauce on popcorn all the time.

Jordan, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 21:14 (eighteen years ago)

(it is great)

Jordan, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 21:16 (eighteen years ago)

pleasant plains otm obv
though the oatmeal might be winning my vote if oatmeal is considered savory, but even with salt i consider it sweet, so...

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 22:02 (eighteen years ago)

This is a cheat, but anytime you're eating a savory food with coffee, you really don't want hotsauce.

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 02:07 (eighteen years ago)

Or rather drinking coffee with a savory food.

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 02:07 (eighteen years ago)

again, breakfast: eggs, coffee, potatoes, bacon, lots of and lots of hot sauce.

ian, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 14:06 (eighteen years ago)

Ian, when can I hire you as live in chef?

Catsupppppppppppppp dude ‫茄蕃‪, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 16:11 (eighteen years ago)

No way - breakfast with coffee AND hot sauce is gross.

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 16:12 (eighteen years ago)

As with a wife and a mistress, I love both but the two must never be together.

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 16:12 (eighteen years ago)

slurpees and cake + hotsauce = dnw

Catsupppppppppppppp dude ‫茄蕃‪, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 16:17 (eighteen years ago)

That is so mental I don't even know where to start, Hurting.

Jordan, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 16:17 (eighteen years ago)

Dude I put hot sauce on popcorn all the time.

YES. been doing this since like junior high.

strongohulkington, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 16:17 (eighteen years ago)

Telling me too choose between hot sauce and coffee at breakfast would be like telling me I can only sleep or breathe this week, not both.

Jordan, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 16:18 (eighteen years ago)

The taste left in my mouth by the combination makes me think gasoline must be the result of a chemical reaction between the two.

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 16:18 (eighteen years ago)

maybe you have the wrong hot sauce / mistress?

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 16:20 (eighteen years ago)

Or the wrong coffee/wife?

Jordan, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

I'm a fan of this stuff for breakfast:

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

http://www.cholula.com/images/fire_peppers.gif

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

I just wanted to include that animation - it was two separate images, apparently.

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

The only problem with hot sauced popcorn is that it's hard to distribute evenly. Sometimes I wonder about using a spray bottle?

Jordan, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

cholula vs. tapatio

bell_labs, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 16:28 (eighteen years ago)

vs. el yucateco

iiiijjjj, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 16:33 (eighteen years ago)

spray bottle hot sauce sounds both practical and dangerous

(btw have you seen these ads for spray salad dressing?? i mean, i guess it's a good idea, y'know, i've seen those spray bottles for olive oil and whatever, but this ad, somehow, is totally gross.)

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 16:37 (eighteen years ago)

The only problem with hot sauced popcorn is that it's hard to distribute evenly. Sometimes I wonder about using a spray bottle?

I pour the hot sauce into the popcorn bag and then shake vigorously.

Jordan, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 16:41 (eighteen years ago)

i can understand the hot sauce v. coffee thing, but all that means is that you have like a swig of water or OJ or something between bites of hot sauced food and drinks of coffee.

now, coffee with hot sauce IN IT might be awful, and never the twain shall meet, but there's no reason they can't coexist at my breakfast table

river wolf, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 17:07 (eighteen years ago)

An aside: One of the grossest things ever was when my roommate, without my knowledge, ground his spices in my coffee mill and didn't do a thorough enough job cleaning it (it would take a pretty harsh solvent, I think).

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 18:51 (eighteen years ago)

that is pretty traumatizing
my roommate only ever ground weed in the coffee grinder. but he had his own and left mine alone (as far as i know...)

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 18:54 (eighteen years ago)

I do wonder what the coffee would be like.

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 18:58 (eighteen years ago)

i wonder if i actually already know

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 19:06 (eighteen years ago)

coffeemilk.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 19:11 (eighteen years ago)

RI delicacy.

ian, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 19:42 (eighteen years ago)

cardamon in coffee.
chili in coffee.
so good!

bell_labs, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 19:53 (eighteen years ago)

Grinding coffee beans in the weed grinder is a guaranteed ticket to flavor and fun.

nickalicious, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 19:56 (eighteen years ago)

cardamon IS good in coffee
weed+coffee has never really done me wrong but i can't do it v often

plantains + hot sauce?

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 22:11 (eighteen years ago)

bell_labs, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 22:12 (eighteen years ago)

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 22:15 (eighteen years ago)

daria-g, Thursday, 17 May 2007 01:46 (eighteen years ago)

Plantains + hot sauce = hell yes

Hurting 2, Thursday, 17 May 2007 01:49 (eighteen years ago)

i need so many more hot sauces

rrrobyn, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:36 (eighteen years ago)

I enjoyed sriracha with my vietnamese spring rolls tonight.
