i cant get the sand out of my shoes
being in florida has done a number on my blues
just the way the women walk round' here
well its plain to see the way the sand and sea
have done a number on me

and the sky is threatening black and gray
and the sun's a festering red
and her head is claiming erstatz
she had risen from bed
so breakfast, again
delayed postponed i wont be fed

the surf has swallowed him up, hes a memory now
the water is warmer then it has been for weeks
grandma lives just down the road
she making supper for me tonight
she's been nice to me since '73
when her son lost his life

and now his ghost is a rising host
above the blinding blur
i would have assume some maid would swoon
and his soul would capture her
hes still a fine kid,
what with all that he did,
hes a fan of mine

i wasn't planning to spend so long in town
but the break in the weather has got the partner down
she wont get out, she's shotgunned
seems she's sown to the sea
its a dirty old trick that i'm yet to lick
and she's yet to beat.

and you can see it in her eyes
she was born unwise
she was born for me
and she mourns too long
i'll know something is wrong
and Ill leave her be
i can see it in his shoes,
he was born to lose
he was born from me

actually, this thread is about the city of West Palm Beach, but feel free to discuss the song if no one has anything to add.

they keep trying to lure me with 'oh we will go to south beach! it is great!' which honestly, does not sound like my cup of tea, esp with my cousin (who is younger than me) and her car salesman, much older (oh and did i mention he's her boss, too?) boyfriend. when they came here i had drinks with them in a revolving bar and they both had girly drinks that came in souvenir glasses. so like, if that's their idea of a great time, i'm frightened.

tehresa, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 12:57 (eighteen years ago)

i love this song so much

south beach seems like hell except for the art deco

WPB was originally called Styx

I lived in WPB for 3 months, and I didn't like it. Crime-laden, ugly, sprawly. An incredible contrast to ur-posh Palm Beach.

my favorite palace song tho!

Flagler and Ingraham planned it that way from day one.

if that question was directed at me shasta, then, yes, that website is registered in my name. it's an outlet for me and 'table is the table,' and lots of our friends contribute as well.

lfam, Thursday, 17 May 2007 23:43 (eighteen years ago)

are you in the area? give me teh scoop if so.

Steve Shasta, Thursday, 17 May 2007 23:44 (eighteen years ago)

as for south beach, it's really fun! if you think you won't like it because it's full of bright things and beautiful people being trendy, just don't overdress and be yourself! miami beach is really the only functioning urban area in miami-dade county.

west palm beach is pretty sprawling. mostly suburbs. palm beach is a little nicer but still pretty boring. imagine rows of hotels along the beach and strip malls.

lfam, Thursday, 17 May 2007 23:46 (eighteen years ago)

i used to "hate" south beach in high school but i was an elitist misanthrope back then. i don't know much about nightlife, though. i like the sun.

lfam, Thursday, 17 May 2007 23:48 (eighteen years ago)

oh, and THERE ARE NO BASEMENTS IN SOUTH FLORIDA, so if nyc basement dive bars are your thing, sorry, you'll have to settle for waterfront dive bars. that always throws off tourists.

lfam, Thursday, 17 May 2007 23:50 (eighteen years ago)

i'll be down there for a couple days first week of june, please let me know if anything's going on. thx.

Steve Shasta, Thursday, 17 May 2007 23:50 (eighteen years ago)

night swimming is a delight, though. warm and dark??? "octopus temperature" aka the perfect temperature for all living things.

lfam, Thursday, 17 May 2007 23:51 (eighteen years ago)

i'll look into it.

lfam, Thursday, 17 May 2007 23:51 (eighteen years ago)

thx again dude.

three years pass...

i'm here for work for pretty much the entirety of July. the beach (Palm Beach proper, I guess?) is v nice: nice clear, warm water. i've been getting out there at daybreak for beach runs and swimming. we went out last night to the bar/ restaurant strip on Clematis(?). egads. ended up in some bar crawling with a bunch of loons who looked like scrubbed up versions of those Real World Jersey Shore clowns.

so Rush Limbaugh lives here, right?

Among others.

Palm Beach County, more than most places, is a place of extremes. I can't imagine more dreary than Boynton Beach (one of my best bros, a reporter at the daily paper, lived there until fairly recently), and there's nothing west of the Turnpike except migrants waiting to get exploited.

Then there's the wealth.

I was in wpb about 5 years ago and thought it was pretty awful!

tehresa, Saturday, 10 July 2010 20:23 (fifteen years ago)

It's got some great restaurants -- if you don't mind paying plenty for terrific food and wine. Not much else to do.

yeah, WPB does seem rather drab. PB appears to consist solely of mansions and financial institutions. a friend told me I should go to Juno beach and the Wreck Bar in Ft. Lauderdale for the swimming mermaid show and then a place called Mai Kai.

er, Juno Beach in Jupiter (?); the others are in Ft. Lauderdale

is Biscayne Bay really where the Cuban gentlemen sleep all day?

i have seen Aston Martin, Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Jaguar dealerships all within about a 1/2 mile stretch

Mai Kai is fabulous kitsch.

Lemme know if you ever come down to Miami-Dade County -- it's much livelier cuz I live here!

i would like to do that! i have a weird job that usually entails me working 7 days a week (~14 hour days during the week, 8+ hours on the weekend, and kind of on call even when i'm "off") when I'm on these out-of-town assignments, so it's pretty hard to get too far from base. but if it looks like a possibility i will definitely shout out. i'd feel incomplete if i came this far south and didn't make it to Miami.

Cafe Baloud is great but you can get that in NYC.
