blue line. it's the one i'm on everyday. ergo best.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 17 May 2007 01:12 (eighteen years ago)

as far as for the movement of people though, they all pretty much blow.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 17 May 2007 01:13 (eighteen years ago)

Pre-construction Brown: most scenic.

g®▲Ðұ, Thursday, 17 May 2007 01:13 (eighteen years ago)

i will go red, as it is the most epic

deej, Thursday, 17 May 2007 01:15 (eighteen years ago)

will anyone vote yellow??? I bet I would if it ended up near pita inn, but i'm not sure where it goes in skokie really

deej, Thursday, 17 May 2007 01:16 (eighteen years ago)

green line is the only line i've ever been attacked on. fucking west side.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 17 May 2007 01:17 (eighteen years ago)

searching and failing to find cover image of 'purple line: tracks & dormitory sessions' rap cd i saw in dr. wax once :-(

deej, Thursday, 17 May 2007 01:17 (eighteen years ago)

I had no idea there was a pink line until i made this poll.

g®▲Ðұ, Thursday, 17 May 2007 01:20 (eighteen years ago)

this was recently added. Basically the southern branch of the blue line had service cut back and the 'pink line' goes from the south to the north loop now. or something like that, i never use it.

deej, Thursday, 17 May 2007 01:21 (eighteen years ago)

it used to be the douglas branch of the blue line, runs to 54th and cermak in cicero. it became it's own line when the rehabbed the paulina connector so now it doesn't hook up with the blue line at the eisenhower. now it runs from polk and paulina north on paulina to the green line tracks so you can switch to the green at ashland and lake. then it takes the lake street elevated tracks into the loop and back out to cicero. the belief is that it will eventually be through-routed with the brown line.

yes, i am a transit dork. bordering on transit aspie.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 17 May 2007 01:23 (eighteen years ago)

Red: epic, most shitty musicians and 3 card monte games
Blue: helps me out a lot, airport people suck
Green: oldest, hardest (see above), wish it went nearer my work
Brown: the construction is supposedly fucking some shit up, otherwise I don't really have an opinion
Purple: evanston schmevanston
Orange: seems like it ought to have more stops, wish it went further out
Yellow: whatever
Pink: wrecked the Douglas branch of the Blue, the Paulina connector is kind of cool

dan m, Thursday, 17 May 2007 01:24 (eighteen years ago)

karate kid 2 ost

Steve Shasta, Thursday, 17 May 2007 01:24 (eighteen years ago)

i will rep for the orange line somehow being faster than driving to the airport.

deej, Thursday, 17 May 2007 01:25 (eighteen years ago)

for what it's worth splitting the douglas branch off DOES improve service on the blue line. in the morning westbound trains now run every 6-8 minutes instead of every 15-18. which is good for me since i get on at western/290 and have to go to the forest park terminus.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 17 May 2007 01:26 (eighteen years ago)

orange line coming from midway at night has an awesome view of the skyline.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 17 May 2007 01:27 (eighteen years ago)

xpost True. I was thinking in terms of getting to Pilsen only.

dan m, Thursday, 17 May 2007 01:28 (eighteen years ago)

if you go south on the red, in addition to musicians and 2 card monte you get people selling socks & cds and the like

deej, Thursday, 17 May 2007 01:28 (eighteen years ago)

uh typo obv i meant 3 card monte

deej, Thursday, 17 May 2007 01:28 (eighteen years ago)

tho i would probably lose 2 card monte as well : (

deej, Thursday, 17 May 2007 01:28 (eighteen years ago)

i've ridden every line except the yellow. and there was one memorable night where i got so drunk i kept passing out that i rode from uptown to 95th back to howard; from howard to wilmette and back; from howard to 41st then back to the ukrainian village then to work. i think i was on every line except the pink that night.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 17 May 2007 01:29 (eighteen years ago)

^^^Good lord you must have been travelling for four hours at least

deej, Thursday, 17 May 2007 01:30 (eighteen years ago)

i lived off the orange line for two years. cheap bridgeport rent and only three stops from the loop. fastest train in the city.

g®▲Ðұ, Thursday, 17 May 2007 01:31 (eighteen years ago)

i left the bar before last call and was late for work i think i was on the train(s) for about 5 1/2 - 6 hours.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 17 May 2007 01:31 (eighteen years ago)

i have only been to chicago once and i know i took purple somewhere and also maybe orange (or was it red? who can say?!). can't say i have an opinion either way about any of them though.

tehresa, Thursday, 17 May 2007 01:31 (eighteen years ago)

lol @ kevin's story.

g®▲Ðұ, Thursday, 17 May 2007 01:31 (eighteen years ago)

the worst i ever did was fall asleep on the western bus after getting on at chicago, waking up at 75th at 5:00 AM.

g®▲Ðұ, Thursday, 17 May 2007 01:33 (eighteen years ago)

GRADY! i've done that too! coming back from the hidden cove (at lincoln and western, basically) i passed out and instead of getting off at division i woke up at 51st st. it was about 6:00 a.m. and i have never been so glad to be the only person on the street in my life.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 17 May 2007 01:35 (eighteen years ago)

i fell asleep and ended up at o'hare once.

i do like the security teams in grey jumpsuits w/ muzzled dogs that keep you company alongside the bums all night

deej, Thursday, 17 May 2007 01:36 (eighteen years ago)

hidden cove has been the begining of many unpleasant late nights/early mornings.

g®▲Ðұ, Thursday, 17 May 2007 01:37 (eighteen years ago)

my GF got pounced on by muzzled security dog once.

g®▲Ðұ, Thursday, 17 May 2007 01:37 (eighteen years ago)

and my final admission of over indulgence in alcohol perhaps will only be appreciated by deej; i got so fucked up at tuman's i had to take a cab home.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 17 May 2007 01:37 (eighteen years ago)

that is ridiculous!

dan m, Thursday, 17 May 2007 01:39 (eighteen years ago)

hahaha

i kind of hate tumans! if they would just get their hipstar djs to spin at darkroom maybe that place wouldn't seem so empty, and maybe tumans wouldn't be so suffocating.

lol @ chicago noize board thread, btw

deej, Thursday, 17 May 2007 02:40 (eighteen years ago)

that's why i don't go on saturdays or friday nights. it's a different place from 3-7, neighborhood bar instead of douchebag magnet. good pub grub though.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 17 May 2007 02:41 (eighteen years ago)

i've taken cabs embarrassingly short distances, esp. right after i got my first 'real' job and could afford it*

*...or so i thought

deej, Thursday, 17 May 2007 02:43 (eighteen years ago)

yeah i go there for the wireless & the food.
high dive has some real good burgers actually

deej, Thursday, 17 May 2007 02:44 (eighteen years ago)

...that you could eat on the CTA

deej, Thursday, 17 May 2007 02:44 (eighteen years ago)

the last two weekends i've gone to cleo's on sunday nights with the bartender and a couple of other regulars, she sets us up there. we pretty much drink back whatever tips we left for her. it's killing both my mondays and my liver.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 17 May 2007 02:46 (eighteen years ago)

dont they have free food on saturday or something?

chicago needs to get hooked up with that 'two beers gets a free pizza' deal i got when i visited ny

deej, Thursday, 17 May 2007 02:50 (eighteen years ago)

gr@dy whats the best way to get from cermak & halsted to damen + chicago drunk @ 2am???

deej, Thursday, 17 May 2007 02:57 (eighteen years ago)

bike.

g®▲Ðұ, Thursday, 17 May 2007 03:27 (eighteen years ago)

or taxi.

or halsted bus to chicago bus?

i never lived in wicker park/ ukranian village. i always thought they were difficult to get to from places that arent on the blue line. even by car sometimes.

g®▲Ðұ, Thursday, 17 May 2007 03:30 (eighteen years ago)

going out at night in WP when i lived in b-port w/o a car was a pain in the ass. expensie cab or scary bus.

g®▲Ðұ, Thursday, 17 May 2007 03:31 (eighteen years ago)

there is no 47th street stop on the Red Line ... I think you mean 47th.

I can see two lines from my window (Red and Green), but I wouldn't vote for either -- although Green comes close. When it crosses the river is great, awesome Wolf Point vista. and you have to love those Koolhaas tubes at IIT. points docked for no stop between roosevelt and 35th.

but I'd probably vote Orange Line for the awesome convenience to Midway, and general utility and actual *good* use of money in reaching out to some underserved areas (it didn't exist when I first moved here.) I wish the nearest stop was closer to me ... again with the hulking stretch south of Roosevelt with no stop, til Halsted. but that same stretch opens up that awesome skyline vista alluded to above, especially when crossing the river at Ping Tom park.

Stormy Davis, Thursday, 17 May 2007 05:30 (eighteen years ago)

er no 41st street stop, that is.

Stormy Davis, Thursday, 17 May 2007 05:31 (eighteen years ago)

the Blue Line is hands down the worst I think. Large stretch underground for one, so that sucks right there. Plus so slow as to be essentially useless right now. Plus it fucking never comes at night when you need it. hell it hardly comes during the day! man, I really despise it something fierce.

Stormy Davis, Thursday, 17 May 2007 05:37 (eighteen years ago)

agreed. yeah fuck the blue

problem with the orange is all the airport traffic, suitcases and shit. really underrated cute girls on the orange line tho, folks seem to prefer the brown for some reason???

deej, Thursday, 17 May 2007 06:03 (eighteen years ago)

i used to live in wrigleyville (yeah, i hated it, but it was a 3 bedroom for $600), and one time i got off work early. i lived one stop past where the brown and purple lines split (is this right, it's been 6-7 years - addison maybe?). right after the lines split, the purple would go express all the way to the end - something like 20 minutes each way. i took the purple to that stop and was supposed to switch, but accidentally forgot to get off and rode all the way to the end. turned around, got all the way back to (is it belmont?), got off the purple to wait for the brown, got on the train and once the doors closed, realized i was on the purple again and had to do it all over again. i wasted 2 hours out of my early day off not even drunk. :(

jaxon, Thursday, 17 May 2007 06:24 (eighteen years ago)

haha. i spent my first three years in chicago at the end of the brown line. i had many friends who had the same thing happen to them, but it never happened to me.

i still think brown line has the best view. i used to try and score the little compartment at the back of the last car, so i could watch the scenery roll away from me, instead of past me. the last few stops on the brown line are really pretty, up through ravenswood. you cross the river's north branch, see some cool houses with boats docked...

g®▲Ðұ, Thursday, 17 May 2007 08:59 (eighteen years ago)

i love the CTA - i still have my card from the last time i travelled in chicago.

stevie, Thursday, 17 May 2007 10:26 (eighteen years ago)

cta is real nice, if you're not in a hurry, and not underground

deej, Thursday, 17 May 2007 14:32 (eighteen years ago)

i kind of like it when it runs express. in the mornings if the westbound side of the platform is full i'll take the next eastbound train to the medical center stop because when they're behind that seems to be the last stop they make before running express to austin. and since the tracks are in good condition out there (as opposed to the blue line north of logan square), the trains can run full speed (60 mph) from damen to austin. it's a nice ride.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 17 May 2007 14:42 (eighteen years ago)

haha our poll expiring in late june = why we are better than ny and sf

deej, Monday, 21 May 2007 04:49 (eighteen years ago)

the cta is that much slower

deej, Monday, 21 May 2007 04:52 (eighteen years ago)

i think i meant to make it May 17.

g®▲đұ, Monday, 21 May 2007 08:07 (eighteen years ago)

which line is rockwell on? is it the brown one?

stevie, Monday, 21 May 2007 11:48 (eighteen years ago)

yes.

g®▲đұ, Monday, 21 May 2007 15:00 (eighteen years ago)

I live off the Brown Line, and I've definitely accidentally ridden the Purple Line to Howard more than once. Usually it's when I'm impatient and just get on the first train that arrives at Merchandise Mart, forgetting to make sure that it says Kimball instead of Linden, and since I'm wearing headphones I can't hear random "THIS IS A PURPLE LINE TRAIN" announcements.

jaymc, Monday, 21 May 2007 19:27 (eighteen years ago)

next time you do that check the jamaican restaurant under the howard stop

deej, Monday, 21 May 2007 19:30 (eighteen years ago)

you guys make me miss the city

the only line i ever rode was the blue line since it was three blocks from my apartment, and even then it was usually to the airport. otherwise i just biked since most of my intercity travel ended up orthogonal to the movement of the trains.

as much as i like the El, the conspicuous lack of interconnects makes it one of the most useless urban train systems i've ever seen

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Sunday, 17 June 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

thanks!

river wolf, Monday, 18 June 2007 01:22 (eighteen years ago)

bullshit, i'm the only one who voted for the blue line?

chicago kevin, Monday, 18 June 2007 02:00 (eighteen years ago)

My friend Rita was on the train when it broke down underground.
I'm guessing it was the blue line.
I've got a job interview in Chicago this week. Wish me luck!

Trip Maker, Monday, 18 June 2007 14:11 (eighteen years ago)

Scary shit!
http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/07/11/chicago.transit/index.html
