I am soooo not into all these bands like Digital Leather and Cheveu and like even a lot of this Jay Reatard stuff. Organ, that's okay, but sci-fi keys? That ain't punk.

(i am going to get a tshirt with this on it.)

Tim Ellison, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:33 (eighteen years ago)

early devo
pere ubu
the damned
bad religion (hahahaha)

Steve Shasta, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:34 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, but what "punk" being made now ARE you into?
-turpentine brothers
-cococoma
-demon's claws
-livefastdie
-the romance novels
-times new viking
-trashies
-dc snipers
-hunchback
-vee dee
-dropdead are still a band

ian, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:41 (eighteen years ago)

i admit that i do like factrix and chrome. i never listen to pere ubu or the damned. early devo does fucking rule, it's true.

ian, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:42 (eighteen years ago)

(times new viking has a keyboard player.) and i guess human eye does too, and i like them well enough.

ian, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:43 (eighteen years ago)

TNV is all about the keys!

Pere Ubu and the Damned are the best. There's nothing synth-punk about the Damned though. A few organs and basic synth strings mainly when they get to the 80s. Lots of synths on Phantasmagoria, but that's not very punk.

Cabaret Voltaire covering the Seeds.

dan selzer, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:49 (eighteen years ago)

are we talking attitude/approach (which can encompass most anything) or are we talking all music generally resembling that narrower set of genres (three chord punk/rock/old-hardcore/etc)?

msp, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:52 (eighteen years ago)

dan i had a damned 12" that was super-heavy on the synth, well.... i sold it 10 years ago though, maybe i imagined it.

Steve Shasta, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:55 (eighteen years ago)

let me try and google

Steve Shasta, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:55 (eighteen years ago)

nm, it was phantasmagoria.

Steve Shasta, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:57 (eighteen years ago)

the latter, msp.
talking about punk as a set of ideals would only lead to needless squabbling.

ian, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:58 (eighteen years ago)

Ian, you should totally buy some Stranglers albums. they were such an awesome psychpunk band. with organ.

black & white album is so fucking cool

scott seward, Thursday, 17 May 2007 05:03 (eighteen years ago)

scott seward, Thursday, 17 May 2007 05:04 (eighteen years ago)

"thrown away" on that album is my own personal anthem and mantra.

scott seward, Thursday, 17 May 2007 05:06 (eighteen years ago)

the locust = ultimate do not want!

and i love 6FS. okay i guess you're right i'm being arbitrary.

ian, Thursday, 17 May 2007 05:08 (eighteen years ago)

Phantasmagoria is a GREAT pop album. Great Fairlight fun and new-psychedelic pop goth goofiness and just some great songs, but it's definitely the LEAST punk moment of the Damned's career.

I second or third the Stranglers...only really got into them last year and only have the first 3 albums but that's some killer stuff. Great organ/keyboard playing as well.

dan selzer, Thursday, 17 May 2007 12:28 (eighteen years ago)

"okay i guess you're right i'm being arbitrary"

but would 6fs fit the punk mode you're talking about? it's sort of like not liking corn in your salsa... you can still like corn on the cob...

PUNK IS A FEELING

David R., Thursday, 17 May 2007 13:01 (eighteen years ago)

there's a reason screamers never put out a record

sexyDancer, Thursday, 17 May 2007 13:08 (eighteen years ago)

it takes a certain something to pull this off. 6fs, red transistor. have you ever heard red asphalt?

Edward III, Thursday, 17 May 2007 13:10 (eighteen years ago)

THE SPITS BEG TO DIFFER. as do spider.

but yeah, i don't dig cheveau or tnv or 90% of digital leather. or volt for that matter.

ian, have you checked out the tuff bananas yet? really fun band out of milwaukee that have at least one 7" out. they're playing a rec release on june 1 in the brew city with cocohomos, twerpentine bros., and gln. billisa's van is already full so i'm scrambling to try to find a ride up there.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 17 May 2007 13:12 (eighteen years ago)

-turpentine brothers
-cococoma

both have keyboards, though not synths.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 17 May 2007 13:14 (eighteen years ago)

that stranglers record is sick

am0n, Thursday, 17 May 2007 13:34 (eighteen years ago)

i never listen to pere ubu

okay this is just absurd

strongohulkington, Thursday, 17 May 2007 13:51 (eighteen years ago)

seriously ian I don't know you anymore.

jessie monster, Thursday, 17 May 2007 14:01 (eighteen years ago)

there's a reason screamers never put out a record

They couldn't afford the studio time?

David R., Thursday, 17 May 2007 14:06 (eighteen years ago)

O/U, post-wise, on when I get sonned for my lack of Screamers knowledge? I'll say 3.

David R., Thursday, 17 May 2007 14:10 (eighteen years ago)

lost sounds!

lauren, Thursday, 17 May 2007 14:24 (eighteen years ago)

scott seward, Thursday, 17 May 2007 14:29 (eighteen years ago)

i like the locust, but i've had their new album sitting in a pile for a month now and i still haven't listened to it. so, um, i guess i don't like them THAT much.

scott seward, Thursday, 17 May 2007 14:30 (eighteen years ago)

lauren turned me onto Lost Sounds, but I haven't kept up on Jay Reatard's stuff since.
