i've never been convinced that the Staten Island Railway even exists

mizzell, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 14:32 (eighteen years ago)

Amtrak - ridiculously overpriced and smells funny

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 14:33 (eighteen years ago)

also the food is vile. i dare you to eat an amtrak bagel.

sleep, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 14:34 (eighteen years ago)

i have eated a amtrak cheeseburger - omg puke

jhøshea, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 14:35 (eighteen years ago)

YUK - the microwaved ones?

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 14:37 (eighteen years ago)

V TRAIN.

bell_labs, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 14:37 (eighteen years ago)

yah the microwave one waht was i thinking - likely something like vermont is so far i am so hungry

now i fly to vermont - fuck amtrak bigtime

jhøshea, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 14:39 (eighteen years ago)

and i would consider amtrak a national, rather than nyc, train, and don't think it should be eligible. but it definitely sucks.

bell_labs, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 14:40 (eighteen years ago)

although i must admit i voted for the bus - the bus brings me down bigtime - its a transportation of depression

http://scoopsnoodle.com/bus/CrosstownEnnui.jpg

jhøshea, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 14:42 (eighteen years ago)

bus otm, that thing is always full of crackheads

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 22 May 2007 14:46 (eighteen years ago)

I've never used the NYC airtrain but the Newark one sucks. I think it was around $8 to go the 1/2 stop from Newark to Newark airport.

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 14:52 (eighteen years ago)

yeah thats pretty much what its like

jhøshea, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 14:53 (eighteen years ago)

the bus can be great, sometimes. taking the bus in manhattan is obviously pointless and frustrating, but sometimes it is the best thing for getting around brooklyn or queens.

bell_labs, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 14:58 (eighteen years ago)

i am a big supporter of buses. of course, buses suck because they are depressing, not because of the percentage of old and/or poor people on them.

amtrak rules because the seats are comfortable and spacious and you can plug in a laptop/phone/ipod, and it's not much longer than flying to Boston or DC. but this is for longer trips - i'll take much cheaper and shittier options under 2 hrs.

anyway, i'm blissfully free of G-riding experiences, and while Manhattan JMZ sucks enormously, at least I'm not gonna die on the thing. I suppose the extremely annoying Roosevelt Islandish stretch of the F is compensated for elsewhere.

S (manhattan)
S (brooklyn)

isn't something missing here?

gabbneb, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:13 (eighteen years ago)

why are buses depressing?

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

buses are depressing?

gabbneb, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:18 (eighteen years ago)

that rockaway s doesnt count - like it just goes the same place as the A wtf

wait maybe that makes it the worst o fuck

jhøshea, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:18 (eighteen years ago)

that's what you just said.

i am a big supporter of buses. of course, buses suck because they are depressing, not because of the percentage of old and/or poor people on them.

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:19 (eighteen years ago)

the buses blow because they get stuck in traffic and/or never show up

m coleman, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:21 (eighteen years ago)

the bus brings me down bigtime - its a transportation of depression

gabbneb, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:22 (eighteen years ago)

when i had a monthly metrocard i used to take the bus all the time to kill time.

jhøshea, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:23 (eighteen years ago)

i took it once from washington heights to 42nd st areaish. it took a really long time.

Yerac, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:23 (eighteen years ago)

This is crazy, if you're bikeless in Bklyn the buses are often the only way to get from A to BCDEFGH... without leaving the borough entirely. Fuckin classic.

Laurel, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:24 (eighteen years ago)

yeah i dont know really what it is about the buses - and im not saying theyre not useful - total downer tho

jhøshea, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:24 (eighteen years ago)

No one here has actually proposed a valid reason for the buses to be depressing. Aside from the "never show up" thing which is a) local and b) seasonal -- outside of winter storm conditions they're AT LEAST as reliable as the NR. Deffo more so than the G.

Laurel, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:27 (eighteen years ago)

lol not everyone lives in bklyn shocker

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:28 (eighteen years ago)

it's probably much less salient in nyc, but people in other cities are always 'buses are so ghetto' etc.

gabbneb, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:29 (eighteen years ago)

buses are not ghetto

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:30 (eighteen years ago)

yeah buses are always late when i need them and the engine noise inside is pretty loud/grating, but they're pretty useful. they are not the worst nyc train.

sleep, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:33 (eighteen years ago)

having to depend on the bus to get you somewhere at a specific time is dud. i had a love/hate relationship with the B61 when i had to take it everyday; it would never come when it was supposed to, but the view going along the red hook waterfront was so idyllic and relaxing that i didn't get too agitated about it. whereas the L train agitates me nearly every day now.

anyways, the bus in not nearly as depressing as certain trains. being above ground pwns being below ground.

bell_labs, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:34 (eighteen years ago)

I used to take DC buses all the time - don't see what's ghetto about them.

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:36 (eighteen years ago)

ghetto is such a weird, fucked up word to use

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:39 (eighteen years ago)

trains feel purposeful, buses feel ennuiful.

jhøshea, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:39 (eighteen years ago)

old people can't walk

sexyDancer, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:41 (eighteen years ago)

sometimes taking a long time to get somewhere=awesome, you get to read an extra chapter/listen to a few more songs

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:42 (eighteen years ago)

i would sooner forswear my love for george w. bush and '00s indie rock than renounce my opinion that buses are 'ghetto' and depressing

gabbneb, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:42 (eighteen years ago)

i ride the buses in manhattan, certain routes are better than others.

depressing maybe because you're at closer quarters than on the subway or at least it feels like that, right on top of each other, breathing and smelling and listening to ppl arguing w/driver or each other and lots of dumb cell phone talk.

m coleman, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:43 (eighteen years ago)

buses are generally energy non-efficient in comparison to other forms of public transit that can be used, also gasoline also pollution also blah blah blah, buses are really non-ideal solutions to a complicated problem. if you live in a place under-served by other forms of public transportation then what the hell are you going to do, obviously you're going to take the bus and be ok with it, and yeah a bus isn't as depressing as the g train.

ppl who live in areas well served by other forms of public transit, in nyc or elsewhere, are of course going to hate the fucking bus. they hit people constantly, mess up traffic patterns, break down and clog streets, make a ton of noise, etc etc. this isn't rocket science!

gabbneb if you fucking use the word "ghetto" again i'm going to hunt you down and punch you straight in teh goddamned face.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:45 (eighteen years ago)

i'm not actually serious but that's not even funny as a joke, you asshole. especially since nyc's northern "ghettos" are rather fantastically served by the subway, so your comment doens't even make any fucking sense.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:46 (eighteen years ago)

tho the thing about subways is that they do not crash into sides of buildings the way dc buses do, so they're less funny.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:47 (eighteen years ago)

i understand people "hating" buses or hating to ride the bus but I do not understand calling them ghetto or thinking that they are depressing as a whole.

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:47 (eighteen years ago)

gabbneb if you fucking use the word "ghetto" again i'm going to hunt you down and punch you straight in teh goddamned face.

gabbneb, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:51 (eighteen years ago)

I do not understand thinking that they are depressing as a whole

you may want to discuss this with yr bro jhoshea

gabbneb, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:52 (eighteen years ago)

ok which bus is gayer: hampton jitney vs. purple nyu bus

bell_labs, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:53 (eighteen years ago)

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:53 (eighteen years ago)

Not everyone lives in Prospect Heights, no, but if buses are necessary for getting around parts of Bklyn that are pretty well served in general and full of young white professionals, multiply that by some big number of times for the need for buses in the outer reaches of Queens, the Bronx, and South/Outer Bklyn.

Laurel, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:54 (eighteen years ago)

i am a big supporter of buses. of course, buses suck

gabbneb, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:55 (eighteen years ago)

U MUST BE FAKE GABBNEBS

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:56 (eighteen years ago)

i dont think theyre geto but they are v depress. i mean theyre slow and they inexplicably stop all the fucking time and there tends to be a higher concentration of eye diseases than in the general population - but still there's something bafflingly extra producing the thick air in there. also i never ever take them so theyre kinda mysterious like people are all where's the n64 dude and i go waht. tho i used to take this one bus all the time in boston - that was bad. also ive taken the one that goes up 1st ave a little. a few times i took one from ft green to bushwick.

jhøshea, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:57 (eighteen years ago)

buses in chicago are well known to be a great place to meet people. the #66 chicago ave. bus is (according to the tribune published red eye) the route with the greatest mix of single attractive people in chicago. the "rum bus" (the 151 Sheridan bus) used to hold the unofficial crown but the 'hoods that route serves are now chock full of married yuppies. unfortuneately the bus i ride every day (the #49 western) serves the actual ghetto and as such, i do ride a very "ghetto bus".

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:58 (eighteen years ago)

i would never express a sentiment i disagree with in sarcastic fashion order to critique it. no one does that on ilx.

gabbneb, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:58 (eighteen years ago)

buses in manhattan are important for going crosstown.

Yerac, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:58 (eighteen years ago)

FAKE GABBNEB IS HI

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:59 (eighteen years ago)

23rd, 42nd, 125th and the one that goes x central park (86 or 72) are pretty frequent.

Yerac, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 16:00 (eighteen years ago)

if you let the bus get you down, then the terrorists have truly won.

ian, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 16:00 (eighteen years ago)

57th too. i also like the bus route that picks up from j&r's below city hall park and goes to alphabet city.

Yerac, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 16:01 (eighteen years ago)

also, i don't mind the bus but i don't LIKE it really. i used to take it to work when i worked @ barnes & noble because it came regularly and was faster than walking the 23 blocks to work. not depressing, except for no leg room.

ian, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 16:02 (eighteen years ago)

I think the buses that are local to me and needed for my social life might be pretty "good" ones, because the B65 and B48 are my best friends in the winter.

Laurel, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 16:03 (eighteen years ago)

SO HAS ANYONE EVER TOOKEN THE WATER TAXI?

jhøshea, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 16:04 (eighteen years ago)

how many noizers has taken the LIRR?

gabbneb, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 16:10 (eighteen years ago)

i have. it was okay for my needs.

ian, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 16:11 (eighteen years ago)

i'm sure lots of noizers have. LIRR is awesome because you can DRINK BEER. metro north too.

bell_labs, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

i has never taken these trains:

S (brooklyn)
PATH
LIRR
Staten Island Railway
2nd Ave Subway
US Helicopter
Hasid Bus
Water Taxi
Heelys Roller Shoes

jhøshea, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 16:17 (eighteen years ago)

i have also never taken heelys roller shoes. ... ;_;

bell_labs, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 16:18 (eighteen years ago)

are there any ex-hasid ILXors to tell us about the secret routes of the hasid bus?

ian, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 16:19 (eighteen years ago)

I has taken the LIRR to the beach, and also I took it home from Penn Station during the transit strike two years ago because it stopped in Bed-Stuy within walking distance of my apt. It was okay.

Laurel, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 16:20 (eighteen years ago)

xp they look so awesome tho right - so jealous of those gliding little kids

jhøshea, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

Does anyone ever take the PATH within NYC? It occurred to me yesterday that if you wanted to get from Christopher Street (or 9th or 14th or 23rd but the last one would be downright ridiculous) to Penn Station or vice versa, you'd actually save a whole 50 cents.

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

Also the PATH is sort of inconvenient in comparison to some NYC trains but it is by and large WAAAY cleaner than anything the MTA can offer, and the stations are cleaner too. And nicer all around.

Laurel, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

The Bklyn S, being elevated, looks out on some cool views, including an old warehouse on Dean St that was refurbished with a green roof (and got into fancy magazines), and you can see the little growing things on the roof from the train. Also I always liked seeing the lighted windows go by from my fire escape when I lived by the tracks.

Laurel, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 16:29 (eighteen years ago)

The bus rules fuck you haters. Also the Bus is good for getting to the UES which is where Gabbneb clearly lives and he's all ;_; oh noes i dont even live on a train!!! ;_;

unless it rains a little bit and you are trying to go to queens! last summer was like constant signal failures

Catsupppppppppppppp dude ‫茄蕃‪, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 17:37 (eighteen years ago)

there was one day last summer when it rained for a couple hours in the afternoon and there was not a single train running into queens, i spent about an hour going back and forth to the 7, NR, EV, and F and then ended up walking across the queensborough bridge to astoria. that was a bunch of bullshit.

bell_labs, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 17:44 (eighteen years ago)
