I have, like, five different bagel sources within a five minute walk and my love for them will never die.

C0L1N B..., Tuesday, 22 May 2007 18:20 (eighteen years ago)

I don't know if I like the Didion essay or hate it. It made me cry but that is not my New York in any way, or my experience of it except in the most romanticized and vaguest possible terms. Still, there is that.

Laurel, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 18:22 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, i used to love that essay for certain reasons and now i love it for other reasons, and the reasons i liked it when younger seem kinda silly to me now. i think i like it these days because it's about doing what you feel is the right thing to do, damn the rest.

thanks for posting that didion link but did you check out the rest of that webpage? it's kinda fascinating, somebody's comic sans personal "home page" (was there ever such a thing as a personal home page? i am here to tell you there was) stopped in time at 1997

s1ocki, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 18:45 (eighteen years ago)

i still love that essay. and i really love this line:

I enter a revolving door at twenty and come out a good deal older, and on a different street.

the thing i love about that didion essay is how... tender she is to her younger self, like she's writing about someone else, someone she loves and is watching make inevitable sad mistakes...

s1ocki, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 01:54 (eighteen years ago)

oh yes, i really like that quality

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 02:04 (eighteen years ago)

wait, bagels? that is crazy talk.

I love didion so much.

horseshoe, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 02:47 (eighteen years ago)

i love her too. you should read all her essays between now and your exam!

estela, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 03:02 (eighteen years ago)

I found the essay more emotionally OTM than literally OTM - I mean I'm not from the Midwest or the South and didn't really grow up mythologizing NYC since my dad was from there and my mom had lived there a long time and I was born there.

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 03:05 (eighteen years ago)

Erm, my dad IS from there and my mom LIVED there for a long time. That was a strange verb tense flub.

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 03:06 (eighteen years ago)

you should write a self-help book called "being emotionally OTM"

s1ocki, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 03:08 (eighteen years ago)

estela, one of her novels is on my exam! but maybe I'll read it over and over again from now until the exam instead of reading anything else.

horseshoe, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 03:13 (eighteen years ago)

lol slocki - omg which reminds me - hey guys, slocki et al.'s radio program pilot is freakin hilarious and will not lose the majority of its appeal to you

i rekindled my love for bagels after i jokingly commented to the guy behind the counter "how much for that?," gesturing at a toasted, sliced, buttered poppy seed bagel behind him. "you want half?" asked he. "yes" said i. it was delicioso.
