― bell_labs, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 20:07 (eighteen years ago)
xylophones are prohibitively expensive :(

They're called Malletech and apparently are one of the biggies...? They are also indirectly the reason my aunt has a giant beautiful Yamaha one.

― rrrobyn, Thursday, 24 May 2007 03:44 (eighteen years ago)
was never in an ensemble though, esp one with matching shirts i wish i had a wooden glockenspiel
― rrrobyn, Thursday, 24 May 2007 03:46 (eighteen years ago)
I rented a xylophone for a while when taking drum lessons and hated the thing. I just wanted to play the bloody drums. Never was in an Orff though.
― Hurting 2, Thursday, 24 May 2007 03:50 (eighteen years ago)
i played drums tonight for a bit and it felt good
― rrrobyn, Thursday, 24 May 2007 03:53 (eighteen years ago)
I have never heard of an Orff Ensemble before.
I played marimba/vibes in marching band my junior year (BAD IDEA HOLY SHIT CREEPY KIDS)
― Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 24 May 2007 03:53 (eighteen years ago)
I was really good at it tho!
― Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 24 May 2007 03:54 (eighteen years ago)
we have a metal xylophone, which is v nice, but i am fond of the weird hollow sound of these wooden ones xpost VIBES!
― rrrobyn, Thursday, 24 May 2007 03:55 (eighteen years ago)
I like the marimba and the vibraphone, just not the xylophone. I don't like playing any of them though - it's like being in a nightmare where you have to play a giant piano with two skinny, awkward little fingers.
― Hurting 2, Thursday, 24 May 2007 04:07 (eighteen years ago)
Vibes I didn't like so much because the mallets didn't bounce back easily (christ my forearms were like ROCKS junior year) and you had to keep stepping back and forth off the pedal. Marimba is the shit, you just beat that shit.
― Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 24 May 2007 04:10 (eighteen years ago)
When I get a place of my own I'm gonna buy a marimba omg
vibraphone really require four mallet technique i wish i possessed

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orff_Schulwerk
"The Orff approach of music education uses very rudimentary forms of everyday activities in the purpose of music creation by young individuals. This includes singing in groups and performing voice instrumental music, rhymes and playing instruments such as the metallophone, xylophone, glockenspiel, and other percussive instruments. The music generated is largely improvisational and original tonal constructions and this builds a sense of confidence and interest in the process of creative thinking. Children also make music together in a group and hence realize the joys of group co-ordination and cohesion. It also involves the participation of other adults and parents in music making. Thus it brings the role of parent in child education in a central position. When interesting original music has been generated by the groups or individual child, then a desire to record it in written format arises. Thus the need to learn writing a score emerges by itself and the child is intrinsically propelled to learn formal music."
in my own personal music fun, i think i never left orff. the bands i had the most fun in were basically orff-ish. m.
