The gorgeousness of 'Fugitive Motel' seconded. It's a much warmer record than Asleep In The Back, it's got this lovely soothing amniotic feel about it.

What I really like about it is that I know 100% that I don't love it as much as I will. Immediacy isn't an Elbow strong point - it took me about six months to really get into Asleep... - but the songs sort of sneak up on you gradually over a period of time.

One of the odder but more enjoyable situations I've been in was when a very open lesbian and myself went to a Cure show back in 1992 and proceeded to spend a couple of hours beforehand judging the general fuckability of female members of the crowd. If anything, she was more blatant than I was!

And I watched my ex-ex play all the way through one of those police corruption-scandal games, where your wife and baby were murdered and you have flashbacks and have to break out of prison and stuff, and also through one of those whole-world RPGs where you take a personality "test" and up as a thief or wizard or warrior or whatever. Very "Receive guardsman weapons training, three golds" sort of thing. Also beautiful, though.

I mean ... I know why you posted that, but it also feels in character to me. :)

(I sometimes get annoyed when I feel left out of a discourse. And lately I have been feeling a little alienated by the fact that I don't really use YouTube except to watch music videos and Taskmaster and random stuff that I see posted elsewhere. I don't care about any of the zoomer influencers or whatever, but I have recently come to understand that a lot of people my age, people I know IRL and on this board, subscribe to various other YouTube channels. So when I see there is a long ILM thread about some YouTube guy I have never heard of, and people are treating him as ubiquitous, part of me is like "Where are you guys even hearing about this guy? And you mean to tell me you are sitting down and regularly watching his videos?" I know I could just look him up, but the mock-naivete is an expression of my alienation.)

Ima Gardener (in orbit), Wednesday, 5 August 2026 15:55 (one month ago)

jaymc I'd say that the long discourse threads are never about youtubers ppl on ILX actually watch; they are about youtubers ILXers resent knowing about.

jaymc, Wednesday, 5 August 2026 16:18 (one month ago)

I assume it's a combination of people who actually consume a lot of YouTube, other music websites (rateyourmusic?) that I'm not familiar with where people post about his videos a lot, social media saturation, who knows

Camaraderie at Arms Length, Wednesday, 5 August 2026 16:55 (one month ago)

I really can't recommend the Unhook browser extension enough for Youtube. It's damn near life-changing.

beard papa, Wednesday, 5 August 2026 17:19 (one month ago)

I think there's an interesting generational divide re. YouTube's place in the world.

As a person in their late 40s, Youtube exists as a glorified utility: a lever to access content made by (a) traditional media companies (b) weirdo uploaders of specialty stuff, e.g. one-off episodes of otherwise unavailable TV, or advice on how to fix my lawnmower. Being 'on' YouTube doesn't convey any authority or legitimacy, it's just a delivery system. Number of views, reputation of creator... basically irrelevant. In my mind, there are a few breakout channels (Mark Rober? TED? Bon Appetit) that were legitimized by YouTube, but I think in most cases they would have found another avenue to fame if YouTube didn't exist.

To people a little younger than me, I think YouTube popularity is a kind of validation of some marker of quality/infamy/appeal. My sister (mid-30s) will send me links to random channels w/ rationale attached 'This guy has 300k followers!' or 'This was really big a few years ago' or 'this guy is lowkey awkward but I realate to him about ...' She and her friends favor a kind of parasocial relationship w/ creators, especially those who have a long/dense history of videos. It feels like I'm supposed to heed/acknowledge or appreciate or react to the content based on the fact of their ubiquity and longevity.

For the young people I work with (teens, early 20s), YouTube is an entire media ecosystem. Can't begin to untangle it. But personal videos (one kid recording a video ripping on another kid), professionally-created content, reposts of TikTok/Instragrm videos, mock-confessional influencers, AI algorithmic stuff, all of it commingle, and it's like something else entirely.

doc (soda), Wednesday, 5 August 2026 17:35 (one month ago)

I just assumed anyone that watches anything music-related on youtube gets recommended a Beato video at some point, he's reached that level of youbiquity.

My mind was blown at my wife's family reunion recently, upon learning that my non-musician in-laws watch Drumeo videos for fun, i.e. a drummer learning and recording a song that they've never heard on the spot or whatever. Like, I knew that it's become the main source for every kid who plays drums, fine. But it had never occurred to me that civilians would be watching these before bed.

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Wednesday, 5 August 2026 21:20 (one month ago)

Beato was humming in the background of my attention, and then pulled my focus when he went after Jon Caramanica for that "30 Greatest Living American Songwriters" list and roundtable. I'd be more inclined to watch more of his if it weren't for their reaction-face title images. Curious about the Billy Joel one.

All yt thumbnails and clickbait titles are the worst, but I accept that's just the cost of playing the game these days (the game being the Youtube Lottery, or maybe it's the Social Media Hunger Games).

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Wednesday, 5 August 2026 21:41 (one month ago)

Yeah, I don't fault him for playing the game, it's just when I look at the right-hand column and its his reaction-face or some band on Letterman in 1993, I end up clicking on the latter. I think I'd rather walk and listen to one of his interviews than watch it (which fits into this larger convo of who is drawn or not drawn to YouTube direct-address videos).

jaymc, I first learned about Beato when someone (I think on ilx) shared Pat Finnerty's What Makes This Song Stink videos, which are a parody of Beato's What Makes This Song Great series. But he's also a big reference point anywhere on the internet that middle-aged men gather to discuss guitar gear or classic rock. Which like, I haven't even been to The Gear Page in years, but my social media algorithms definitely still have me pegged as that type of guy. I have watched a handful of his videos, myself, so I don't really know enough to resent him.
