adness to Hurt is "just another state of consciousness," so deeper he plunges into psychedelic paraphernalia in search of the "unborn soul," unclogging pounds of symbolism within his brain along the way -- a crucified goat-man blinks its seven eyes from the cross he's been nailed to, though the film's one good shot is back in this world, the hero's pot-party introduction to anthropologist Blair Brown while "Light My Fire" revs up in the soundtrack.

now they've got seven eyes
and also the fainting?

rrrobyn, Thursday, 21 June 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

im only guessing here, but i think ken russell might be a catholic

i dunno, the jesus imagery in the william hurt character's hallucinations is straight from the novel the movie's based on. the book was wriiten by paddy chayefsky of "Network" fame, and apparently he hated Russell's treatment of the novel so much he took his name off the screenplay. which is pretty ironic because the movie is a pretty straightforward (as much as the word "straightforward" can be applied to this flick, anyway) adaptation of the book.

Sen. Minority Whip Trent Lott, R-Miss., was talking to reporters Wednesday about the immigration bill, when he said, "If the answer is 'build a fence' I've got two goats on my place in Mississippi. There ain't no fence big enough, high enough, strong enough, that you can keep those goats in that fence."

"Now people are at least as smart as goats," Lott continued. "Maybe not as agile. Build a fence. We should have a virtual fence. Now one of the ways I keep those goats in the fence is I electrified them. Once they got popped a couple of times they quit trying to jump it."

"I'm not proposing an electrified goat fence," Lott added quickly, "I'm just trying, there's an analogy there."

Asked for clarification as to what exactly the analogy was, Lott spokesman Lee Youngblood said that the senator supported a variety of measures in the immigration bill, including unmanned aerial surveillance vehicles, radar and more border patrol agents, as well as a fence to reduce the flow of illegal immigration.

Once there were no goats on the Olympic Peninsula. Then, sixty years ago, a dozen of them were introduced as an experiment. Like every other form of life in the Olympics, they flourished, breeding madly, growing to absurd heights, some with pot bellies. Plenty of high-country meadows in the summer and rich valleys in the winter. No hunters. With the gray wolf extinct in these parts, and mountain cougars reduced to a handful, there are no natural predators. Now there are more mountain goats in the Olympics than anywhere else in the country. They tear up the fragile meadows, defoliate the shrubs, and drop large turds in the trickling fresh water of alpine zone. The goats are cute. Very athletic. Their eyes are big, moist, brown, irresistible. But they are not indigenous, and are making life hard for plants that are, and so the Park Service has decided they must go. At a cost of $1,000 per goat, the rangers are airlifting them out and sending them to goat-deprived areas throughout the West.
