2) playing blue monday ever

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Thursday, 21 June 2007 18:38 (eighteen years ago)

elmo argonaut, Thursday, 21 June 2007 18:41 (eighteen years ago)

back spin mix- when you know the mix is crap so you just throw that last record back to get that sound and then cut to the new one.

carne asada, Thursday, 21 June 2007 18:41 (eighteen years ago)

maybe political rally djs play don't stop believin;?

tehresa, Thursday, 21 June 2007 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

maybe journey sucks just as much now as they ever did?? just a thought

elmo argonaut, Thursday, 21 June 2007 18:45 (eighteen years ago)

yea I was actually thinking of a time at club hell :(

back spin mix- when you know the mix is crap so you just throw that last record back to get that sound and then cut to the new one.

BOMB DROPPING AND BLOWING UP SAMPLE

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Thursday, 21 June 2007 18:46 (eighteen years ago)

actually the 80's night is held in club heaven, which is two flights up the stairs from club hell. club hell usually just plays chart hop.

El Tomboto, Thursday, 21 June 2007 18:47 (eighteen years ago)

the DJ at our wedding played DSB and everybody went nuts

El Tomboto, Thursday, 21 June 2007 18:47 (eighteen years ago)

the bassline is terrific

El Tomboto, Thursday, 21 June 2007 18:48 (eighteen years ago)

3) playing "She's Lost Control" at any time

Mr. Que, Thursday, 21 June 2007 18:48 (eighteen years ago)

carne asada, Thursday, 21 June 2007 18:49 (eighteen years ago)

dsb is perfect for karaokes too but clubs, ehhhhh

tehresa, Thursday, 21 June 2007 18:49 (eighteen years ago)

re: 1-2 my friend just started working at r0yal 0ak and asked me if i wanted to do a dj nite and i was like "i dont dj" and she described her first night of work as basically 2 girls doing exactly the above with a laptop and making $300...:/

bell_labs, Thursday, 21 June 2007 18:50 (eighteen years ago)

jon, i guess it is ok, since we are talking about the lame things bad dj's do.

on that note, transitioning from under pressure to vanilla ice, or rick james to mc hammer, or from chic's "good times" into any of the 53116 songs that samples "good times"

elmo argonaut, Thursday, 21 June 2007 18:51 (eighteen years ago)

DO IT

tehresa, Thursday, 21 June 2007 18:51 (eighteen years ago)

4) playing the hits

5) charging people for #4

El Tomboto, Thursday, 21 June 2007 18:53 (eighteen years ago)

i really can't understand why everyone else in the world gets so down & crazy with DSB, i feel so lonely

elmo argonaut, Thursday, 21 June 2007 18:54 (eighteen years ago)

i break it down to the fundamentals

El Tomboto, Thursday, 21 June 2007 18:54 (eighteen years ago)

extra long pre-produced intros

carne asada, Thursday, 21 June 2007 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

btw anyone who is a dj, it is your job to get people to DANSE, so when no one is on the dancefloor, that does not mean it is ok for you to delve into your obscuities and concoct a undancable obnoxious gay techno set, YOU ARE NOT DOING YOUR JOB CORRECTLY

elmo argonaut, Thursday, 21 June 2007 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

3) playing "She's Lost Control" at any time

Also Love Will Tear Us Apart.

The moment to produce a song about this is NOW!!! Also I feel the same way. I like listening to it alone tho.

Lindsay, most of those people don't even do fadeouts, let alone beat match. :/

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Thursday, 21 June 2007 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

HEY GUYS I'M GOING TO CUT ON THE MIDS AND THEN KICK THEM ON RIGHTWHEN THE SONG GETS AWESOME BRBRBRBRBRB K?

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Thursday, 21 June 2007 18:58 (eighteen years ago)

most of these could be cut out with 'destroy 80s nite'

deej, Thursday, 21 June 2007 18:58 (eighteen years ago)

Mashing up any rap song with the original song that was sampled i.e. "California Love" by Tupac with "Woman to Woman" by Joe Cocker.

Pausing the record for sixteen beats right before the "Awwwww wham bam thank you ma'am!" part of "Suffragette City".

Measuring the beats using your foot inside a flip-flop built into the table.

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 21 June 2007 18:59 (eighteen years ago)

Also if you are hosting an event never never never be the only dj because you will be obligated to mingle while playing (*looks for 5 minute plus song to pee*) and then will get lazy

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Thursday, 21 June 2007 19:00 (eighteen years ago)

and also drink too much

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Thursday, 21 June 2007 19:00 (eighteen years ago)

El Tomboto, Thursday, 21 June 2007 19:01 (eighteen years ago)

EQ trickery is definitely not going to cut it

carne asada, Thursday, 21 June 2007 19:01 (eighteen years ago)

Is there a face guide to mp3jaying?

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Thursday, 21 June 2007 19:02 (eighteen years ago)

tombot, am I allowed to have cribnotes written in a notebook with timecodes + bpms and stuff?

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Thursday, 21 June 2007 19:02 (eighteen years ago)

haha I didn't have cribnotes but I did have a notebook with each cd-r's playlist on it so I could remember which songs were in A and which were in B. timecodes are acceptable I guess

I think having a complete setlist or BPMs written down is some wedding-level bullshit though

El Tomboto, Thursday, 21 June 2007 19:05 (eighteen years ago)

this includes writing instructions to yourself in any of the various fields in iTunes

El Tomboto, Thursday, 21 June 2007 19:05 (eighteen years ago)

most DJs (including me) don't have the skills to do anything remotely interesting or innovative. so just play the records and try not to fuck it up too much.
and while you're at it leave you doubles at home

carne asada, Thursday, 21 June 2007 19:05 (eighteen years ago)

I used to have a list of song timecodes to do transitions at but it led to an awesome ROCKMAN SOUNDTRACK DANSU REMIXU vocal morph into DANCING QUEEN. I think the key is the same too but I think there's some audible weirdness since you have to pitch some.

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Thursday, 21 June 2007 19:07 (eighteen years ago)

leave you doubles at home

rong, porkchop phasing intro of "games without frontiers" = awesome

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Thursday, 21 June 2007 19:08 (eighteen years ago)

6) U2

7) last song of the night is self-referential to being the last song of the night, cf "closing time" etc.

El Tomboto, Thursday, 21 June 2007 19:08 (eighteen years ago)

Also I tried to touch one of those CD players with a truntable thing than spins on top of it and i got shocked. God?

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Thursday, 21 June 2007 19:09 (eighteen years ago)

best last song of the night though is "avalon"

bell_labs, Thursday, 21 June 2007 19:09 (eighteen years ago)

re 7, I think mostly this is bad but I would state this as merely strongly recommended. I think there could be something good

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Thursday, 21 June 2007 19:09 (eighteen years ago)

6a) Negativeland

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 21 June 2007 19:10 (eighteen years ago)

I am banning myself from playing Daft Punk

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Thursday, 21 June 2007 19:14 (eighteen years ago)

guys there is nothing wrong with 80s night

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 21 June 2007 19:24 (eighteen years ago)

it's the only night I go to :(

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 21 June 2007 19:24 (eighteen years ago)

I am banning myself from playing Daft Punk

so just justice then

sleep, Thursday, 21 June 2007 19:34 (eighteen years ago)

daft punk is not cheap, daft punk is classic

i mean, yeah, you don't want to be gimmicky or anything, but don't make it impossible for yourself

elmo argonaut, Thursday, 21 June 2007 19:37 (eighteen years ago)

I thought the first post of the thread was a Sopranos reference

dmr, Thursday, 21 June 2007 19:45 (eighteen years ago)

You mean it's not?

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 21 June 2007 19:49 (eighteen years ago)

CLUB HELL in providence is now located next to a coffee shop called PERKATORY

^^^(formerly sp1ke's, where rrrobyn/ned/ian/jon/me feasted on hot dogs during terrastock)

elmo argonaut, Thursday, 21 June 2007 19:58 (eighteen years ago)

lol @ clubs with hell/purgatory references just like the '80s night club here

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 21 June 2007 19:59 (eighteen years ago)

basically, club hell makes me want to vomit on fattey goths @ fetish nite or firebomb JWU dorms after 80s nite >:O

elmo argonaut, Thursday, 21 June 2007 20:00 (eighteen years ago)

8) gay club dj's, why u like fergie so much? plz to cio

elmo argonaut, Thursday, 21 June 2007 20:04 (eighteen years ago)

friends used to call fattey goths --> gooths (guths?). is this common?

jaxon, Thursday, 21 June 2007 20:08 (eighteen years ago)

So David Cross stole the idea of stopping that particular song from a Rhode Island Club 80's Night cheap trick. Huh.

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 21 June 2007 20:35 (eighteen years ago)

David Cross Chase. Good fucking grief.

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 21 June 2007 20:52 (eighteen years ago)

also I like when DJs play Blue Monday but that's probably because I live in time/place where nobody has heard of Blue Monday

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 21 June 2007 21:17 (eighteen years ago)

1a) doing the same thing with 'don't you want me', works like a charm.

9) cutting the power on the turntable so it spins to a stop.

haitch, Friday, 22 June 2007 01:58 (eighteen years ago)

isn't there some weird mod you can do do technics motors to get automatic spinback if you hold the button or something?

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Friday, 22 June 2007 02:22 (eighteen years ago)

Cheap or good, pls to advise Y/N:

DJ playing "Hippy Chick" to confuse everyone thinking it is "How Soon is Now" but then ripping "Hippy Chick" off turntable, snapping it in half in everyone's view and then playing "How Soon is Now" for reals.

Trayce, Friday, 22 June 2007 03:27 (eighteen years ago)

(I thought it was awesome. Disclaimer: was about 15 years ago)

Trayce, Friday, 22 June 2007 03:27 (eighteen years ago)

1a) doing the same thing with 'don't you want me', works like a charm.

works even better if you play the instrumental from League Unlimited Orchestra

dan selzer, Friday, 22 June 2007 03:38 (eighteen years ago)

I kind of like the "Beejwww" sound from power-down

Hurting 2, Friday, 22 June 2007 03:45 (eighteen years ago)

aw, but hippychick is the bomb

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 22 June 2007 03:52 (eighteen years ago)

Well, you could do it the other way round and snap the Smiths in half I guess! =)

Trayce, Friday, 22 June 2007 04:04 (eighteen years ago)

dan that's the version i played!

haitch, Friday, 22 June 2007 10:56 (eighteen years ago)

Also if you are hosting an event never never never be the only dj because you will be obligated to mingle while playing (*looks for 5 minute plus song to pee*) and then will get lazy

HI!!!!!!!!!

i split dj duties for my birthday party in 2001...got lazy and hammered ..ended up playing bits of jesus crist superstar painfully loud...and some other crap..probably huggybear and galveston at the same time...and i still used actual records then...not as bad as some of the shit pulled around that time...

bb, Friday, 22 June 2007 13:41 (eighteen years ago)

the first time i DJed i brought along the 17min version of InnaGaddaDaVida so i could mingle

jaxon, Friday, 22 June 2007 17:29 (eighteen years ago)

I WAS THERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRE
