yeah sometimes when my shapefiles won't load correctly into ArcMap and i'm like WTF but then it turns out it was set to NAD83 instead of state plane, which is why the coordinates were all wacky

I've kinda calmed down a bit - I only saw it for a second, but that was enough. now I'm wondering why, but I'm afraid to google it some more.
