I did not know there was a cartoon.
The first movie freaked me out when I was a kid.
I got into the comic book later.
The second movie is pretty fun b-movie silliness. So was the live-action TV show spun off from it.
But the comic is something else. The original series was great and of course the Alan Moore issues and now DC is compiling the Rick Veitch issues which weren't as good but still...

was this a Troma thing? or was there another radioactive waste movie they did?
― jaxon, Friday, 22 June 2007 20:07 (eighteen years ago)
you thinking of the Toxic Avenger?

WES CRAVEN! Adrienne Barbeau AND Louis Jordan!
I loved the scene where Arcane transforms into what-the-fuck.

seriously, that movie really creeped me out when I was a kid.

The Veitch issues probably aren't as good, but they're good in a totally different way. Plus the infamous Christ issue!
― forksclovetofu, Friday, 22 June 2007 21:11 (eighteen years ago)
are they reprinting that? It never appeared in the original run.
Not long after that whole contraversy I was at a convention excited to meet Michael Zulli because I was a huge fan, perhaps the only fan, of his series the Puma Blues. At that point that was pretty much all he did, that and one of those weird later turtles issues. He had the original art to the Christ issue and I said "wow, so that's the non-issue?" and he replied "actually, I'd say it was quite a big issue!"

I've never seen it really. i'm just saying you gotta give Roarin' Rick dap for the cajones it took to go for that.
And I love Puma Blues as well! Zulli's work these days is somehow less intriguing to me but the draftsmanship on that series is nuts.

The Puma Blues had a huge impact on me back then. I have the t-shirt, I had a signed Zulli print, as well as a framed, signed zulli marker drawing of a manta-ray that was stolen out of the trunk of my mother's car before it even got on my high school wall. I also went to a convention that featured most of the Mirage crew around the time the Puma Blues benefit issue came out featuring submissions from all those people, so I got it signed by pretty much everyone involved except Dave Sim, who I never met. I stopped reading comics for a while so it wasn't till some years later that I realized Zulli had been doing some vertigo stuff, Sandman and whatnot, but to be honest, I never thought that color stuff looked as good as the BW stuff he did on the Puma Blues.
But I am proud to say I actually DID see the crucification issue.
For those who don't know what we speak of...during the end of Alan Moore's run, Moore had Swamp Thing travel through space. Not as cheesy as it sounds, in fact, probably the most ambitious if not downright pretentious shit ever seen in a "mainstream" comic. A while after Rick Veitch took over, Veitch had him travel through time, and it was a great story. The final issue of that long arc was supposed to be Swamp Thing appearing AS the cross. The higher-ups at DC banned the issue, Veitch walked and a lesser story replaced it.

I was also convinced this Pixies song was about the Puma Blues...
Woooooo! -Grunt-
Do the manta ray [4X]
Your head can go real screw with saucers chasing you
Dance the manta ray [5X]
This don't swim- -this fly fly c'mon

fifth-last issue; final was going to be him getting back to present-day and Tefe's birth

Zulli, Bissette and Totleben are so good and ended up doing kinda mediocre and sporadic work after the eighties. Bissette's TYRANT in particular was maddening; a great idea of seeing a baby t-rex hatch, grow to full maturity and die that apparently never got past the third issue. Gawd, I want a complete finished tpb of that.
