elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 21:31 (eighteen years ago)

shit needs to stop

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 21:31 (eighteen years ago)

SOMEDAY LOVE WILL FIND YOU

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 21:34 (eighteen years ago)

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 21:35 (eighteen years ago)

HO-ooold AW-oof on the FEE-lay-ee-ay-in'!

Jon Lewis, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 21:37 (eighteen years ago)

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 21:39 (eighteen years ago)

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 21:39 (eighteen years ago)

this is inspired by guy in the next cube playing Don't Stop Believin' 3x today

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 21:40 (eighteen years ago)

also, post-sopranos bandwagoneering

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 21:40 (eighteen years ago)

Dammit, Elmo

Laurel, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 21:42 (eighteen years ago)

seriously, fired

strongohulkington, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 21:43 (eighteen years ago)

it is only one song in the whole universe

is it too much to ask for it to be destroyed forever?

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 21:44 (eighteen years ago)

BREAK THOSE CHAINS THAT BIND YOU

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 21:44 (eighteen years ago)

find journey "don't stop believin" --> replace boston "more than a feeling"

i would accept this

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 21:45 (eighteen years ago)

Robert Anton Wilson would agree w thread title

sexyDancer, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 21:48 (eighteen years ago)

But it's a good song.

admrl, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 21:48 (eighteen years ago)

More Than A Feeling also good but lyrics not as good.

Also Asia-Heat Of The Moment is good.

admrl, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 21:50 (eighteen years ago)

to me, it doesn't really matter if it's a good song anymore. i've heard it at least once every day for the past month, i feel like i am going mad.

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 21:50 (eighteen years ago)

wait, why do you have to listen to journey so much? who are these ppl you are hanging with?

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Wednesday, 11 July 2007 21:50 (eighteen years ago)

ha, guy cube over does the exact same thing!

jaxon, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 21:52 (eighteen years ago)

the guy in the next cube plays journey pretty regularly
also, random car stereos
and strangers yowling this at karaoke nights
and local bar playing live a journey concert dvd wtf
and a few of my friends will jam out to this, too

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 21:53 (eighteen years ago)

I LIKE THE LYRICS TO MORE THAN A FEELING BETTER ADAM

Tim Ellison, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 21:57 (eighteen years ago)

fair enough

admrl, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 21:59 (eighteen years ago)

they don't romanticize dumb stuff like "STREETLIGHTS! PEOPLE!"

Tim Ellison, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 22:06 (eighteen years ago)

Noway, you don't want it, that's the way you don't need it

bobby bedelia, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 22:06 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, I really sincerely love both those things.

xp

admrl, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 22:07 (eighteen years ago)

not to say that i don't like streetlights and people because u know i do! but it's hackneyed is all i'm saying.

Tim Ellison, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 22:07 (eighteen years ago)

SMELL OF WINE AND CHEAP PERFUME

Tim Ellison, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 22:07 (eighteen years ago)

It's not hackneyed if it's true!

admrl, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 22:09 (eighteen years ago)

the sentiment always seemed phony to me

Tim Ellison, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 22:12 (eighteen years ago)

That's regrettable, as to me it's always been an expression of sheer amazement at the grand wonder of the contemporary urban experience in its purest form.

admrl, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 22:19 (eighteen years ago)

The number of times that I haven't been able to put a feeling into words when what I am really feeling is "Streetlights! And People!". I think it embarasses us to hear/read it because the truth is so real that we feel almost...corny. We don't want to point out the ovious, but we're all feeling it. So why not express it?

admrl, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 22:21 (eighteen years ago)

And now this beautiful sentiment, expressed by the only the brave few, is buried beneath a mountain of intertextuality and guilty pleasure. It's sad. Journey should perhaps turn to calligraphy and forsake a wider audience for a simpler purity of expression.

admrl, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 22:24 (eighteen years ago)

Is this the thread for me to talk about how much I've been playing Foreigners greatest hits lately?

I think so.

John Justen, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 22:25 (eighteen years ago)

I guess it's actually "Streetlight people livin' just to find emotion hiding somewhere in the night" so it's not really about amazement at the grand wonder of the contemporary urban experience after all. All we are left with the absolute emptiness of lines like:

Everybody wants a thrill
Payin anything to roll the dice,
Just one more time
Some will win, some will lose
Some were born to sing the blues

Tim Ellison, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 22:32 (eighteen years ago)

Well, the grand wonder of the contemporary urban experience may have a bitter aftertaste, but that doesn't stop us from being so utterly mesmerized when we make that initial encounter.

Also, the song goes "woooooooaaaah!" which I've always taken to denote pleasure as opposed to sadness, pain or regret. There's a sense of release there.

admrl, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 22:39 (eighteen years ago)

That should really be "connote", I think. Forgive my schoolboy error!

admrl, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 22:40 (eighteen years ago)

Also isn't there something ultimately beautiful about fate, no matter how far one can fall? I like to think so.

admrl, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 22:42 (eighteen years ago)

I know what everyone is thinkin... that this is the conversational equivalent of playing "Don't Stop Believin'" over and over again.

admrl, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 22:44 (eighteen years ago)

Tim you left out the last line of that verse which kind of ties the thing together.

Steve Shasta, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 22:46 (eighteen years ago)

Tell us, Steve.

admrl, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 22:46 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I think that interpretation of the "woooooooaaaah" is correct, Adam. But the song's always felt forced to me - were they really inspired to create this little commentary on the souls who venture into the urban environment?

It just feels like cliche, whereas "When I see Marianne walk away" is a simple statement that feels way more real to me.

Tim Ellison, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 22:50 (eighteen years ago)

The line about the movie that never ends...

Tim Ellison, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 22:52 (eighteen years ago)

imho, "livin' on a prayer" has the similar sentiment -- about holding out hope even though life is hard and making a living is even harder, because sometimes there are people who can make it all worthwhile & magical etc etc

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 23:05 (eighteen years ago)

Can we also destroy Oh Sherry? Even though that is a Steve Perry song technically.

jessie monster, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 23:06 (eighteen years ago)

YES.

John Justen, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 23:07 (eighteen years ago)

*sigh* another great song. This is America's cultural heritage, you people should be proud!

admrl, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 23:11 (eighteen years ago)

I wonder if he named it "Oh Sherry" because then when radio DJs introduced it they would have to rhyme.

jessie monster, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 23:12 (eighteen years ago)

I duetted with my wife on Warrant's "Heaven" at a karaoke thing in London and nobody there knew it. =(

admrl, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 23:14 (eighteen years ago)

WAHT

John Justen, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 23:15 (eighteen years ago)

That hurts my heart.

John Justen, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 23:15 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah

admrl, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 23:15 (eighteen years ago)

BTW, current touring version of Warrant has no Jani Lane, and is crap.

John Justen, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 23:19 (eighteen years ago)

haha elmo's thread = FAILS.

gr8080, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 23:23 (eighteen years ago)

sorry elmo

admrl, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 23:23 (eighteen years ago)

i feel elmo wrt getting sick of this song, but only temporarily. deserves a 3 day ban not a lifeban

sleep, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 23:29 (eighteen years ago)

(the song, not elmo!)

sleep, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 23:29 (eighteen years ago)

i agree.

gr8080, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 23:36 (eighteen years ago)

i do not mind standing alone in my opposition to journey. i love fun and generally wouldn't be bothered by journey, but this song has really been raising my dander recently. (although i never really understood the appeal of this song to begin with!)

elmo argonaut, Thursday, 12 July 2007 01:07 (eighteen years ago)

but elmo didn't you choose this song when we were at karaoke?????

tehresa, Thursday, 12 July 2007 02:35 (eighteen years ago)

HO SNAP

i just got around to watching the finale and i think you are right about a bump in this song's popularity as a result of its use there.

gr8080, Thursday, 12 July 2007 08:12 (eighteen years ago)

wait don't talk about the end of the sopranos here....i'm like 1.5 seasons behind :/

river wolf, Thursday, 12 July 2007 14:01 (eighteen years ago)

i'm really glad that adam is back.

lauren, Thursday, 12 July 2007 14:43 (eighteen years ago)

tehresa, that is fucking a libelous assertion, no way did i choose that song

as i recall, i did MANEATER and HYPERBALLAD and maybe some other things but definitely NOT JOURNEY

i take u to court

elmo argonaut, Thursday, 12 July 2007 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

H & O's Maneater or the Nelly Furtado one?

mh, Thursday, 12 July 2007 14:58 (eighteen years ago)

no we all sang that song together, dude! i remember v clearly!
maybe travis picked it?

tehresa, Thursday, 12 July 2007 14:58 (eighteen years ago)

hall&oates yeaaah

i think travis is the likely culprit

elmo argonaut, Thursday, 12 July 2007 15:00 (eighteen years ago)

you still sang with us, though. i believe that was the finale of our karaoke marathon.

tehresa, Thursday, 12 July 2007 15:02 (eighteen years ago)

who the hell sings hyperballad at karaoke

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 12 July 2007 15:03 (eighteen years ago)

u lie

elmo argonaut, Thursday, 12 July 2007 15:04 (eighteen years ago)

schef, the same type of guy who sings WHITE RABBIT and RIGHT SAID FRED which is exactly what i did last night

elmo argonaut, Thursday, 12 July 2007 15:04 (eighteen years ago)

dude it was during group song time, right after like, don't speak or something.

tehresa, Thursday, 12 July 2007 15:05 (eighteen years ago)

right said fred is one thing, i will always cosign on the singing of i'm too sexy

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 12 July 2007 15:05 (eighteen years ago)

i was forcibly stripped of my shirt during the latter song. not pretty.

elmo argonaut, Thursday, 12 July 2007 15:05 (eighteen years ago)

it was, indeed, too sexy

elmo argonaut, Thursday, 12 July 2007 15:06 (eighteen years ago)

the last time i actually sang at karaoke carey picked gloria thinking it was them's gloria instead of laura branigan's gloria and so i had to sing it for her because she didn't know laura branigan's gloria. ;_;

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 12 July 2007 15:08 (eighteen years ago)

I only know Vivaldi's Gloria. :(

Laurel, Thursday, 12 July 2007 15:14 (eighteen years ago)

we need to believe. those belief become public truths [absolutley sic]

bb, Thursday, 12 July 2007 15:20 (eighteen years ago)

laurel, you think that is a joke but someone else there that night insisted on singing a song entirely in italian :\

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 12 July 2007 15:24 (eighteen years ago)

because she didn't know laura branigan's gloria. ;_;

???????

strongohulkington, Thursday, 12 July 2007 15:26 (eighteen years ago)

Fuckin' I could really sell LB's Gloria at karaoke. It's right in my favored vocal register (e.g. heartbreaker)

Jon Lewis, Thursday, 12 July 2007 15:32 (eighteen years ago)

hah i discovered at that place we went in k-town that they actually have a list of opera arias... man, if dan perry and i did karaoke it would be so nerdy but awesome.

tehresa, Thursday, 12 July 2007 15:40 (eighteen years ago)

white rabbit is my friend's showstopping number. the "feed your head" bit is v. dramatic.

lauren, Thursday, 12 July 2007 15:55 (eighteen years ago)

I could do certain lieder by Schubert, Mahler and Debussy but probably nothing operatic.

My wife does killer early Grace Slick but hates karaoke :(

Jon Lewis, Thursday, 12 July 2007 16:01 (eighteen years ago)

We have a K-Town too.

admrl, Thursday, 12 July 2007 16:07 (eighteen years ago)

I am assured by the engineers at my workplace that the K-Town here (near Empire St. bldg) is the part of NYC that most resembles Hong Kong. Counter-intuitive but there you go.

Jon Lewis, Thursday, 12 July 2007 16:12 (eighteen years ago)

K Town is fun, but I haven't hung out there enough. I like Ctown karaoke better for the creep out vibe

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Thursday, 12 July 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)
