If anything ever threatens Academy Records I will stand vigil with a pitchfork trident and a torch.

Also I decided to have my birthday at Natural Tofu. Do the flood waters somehow bypass K-Town?

Yeah, I have this weird possibly-allergy thing with intense chocolate but I've had other stuff there and found it great.

Jon Lewis, Thursday, 12 July 2007 16:51 (eighteen years ago)

the brooklyn academy store has a basement full of classical, but is irregular with getting dispensed to the bins. tons of shit for 25-50 cents.

there is so much stuff i would get from wburg classical section if i had turntable. dunno how great of shape the records are in, but there's usually tons of stuff i would want to listen to.

tehresa, Thursday, 12 July 2007 19:50 (eighteen years ago)

I don't have a turntable these days either. Hence my classical has to come from 18th st. where they got the heaps of CDs.

Best source for free classical music in nyc has to be Lincoln Center public library's CD collection. I try to go up there once a month or so. If you're an opera person the selection is pretty deep. It's so frustrating though when I find something awesome there and it's too thrashed to play when I get it home. People treat library CDs like shit.

Roman Abramovich managed to spend $47k at a New York restaurant called Nello’s while his girlfriend Dasha Zhukova drank only mineral water at $10 a bottle.

The waiters were reported to be high-fiving each other in the kitchen, and rightly so, over the $7,000 service charge.

Nello’s is one of the city’s premier Italian restaurants, owned by Nello Balan who recalls how Roman, girlfriend Dasha , his son Arkady and three business associates wined and dined through the best his restaurant could provide.

Nello Balan, the restauranter said: ‘When they started ordering, it was clear that excellence and perfection was on their agenda, rather than looking at the price.’

Some of the purchases included:

* Two bottles of Chateau Petrus wine, (One of the world’s most highly rated and expensive wines)

* Three bottles of La Tache Romanee Conti pinot noir

* Two magnums of Cristal rosé champagne

* Tawny port and Johnnie Walker Blue Label whisky

A waiter working the Abramovich table at Nello’s said: ‘Roman’s son had seafood pasta and the other friends were very relaxed and shared dishes of prosciutto, calamari and pasta. They ordered the most expensive wine and champagne on the menu.

‘Roman had a glass of champagne and a couple of glasses of red wine. The men ordered 40-year-old port to end their meal but they just had a sip and left the rest. What they didn’t drink, they gave away at the end of their meal to other diners. It was amazing.

‘There was a couple at the next table who ended up being given a half-finished bottle of Petrus. They must have thought they had won the lottery.

‘Mr Abramovich is a man of great wealth and very good taste. The final total was high but that was because he ordered some very fine wines which he generously shared with others in the restaurant.’

Mr Nello presented the Chelsea owner with a commemorative football at the end of his meal. He said: ‘I love soccer and I have lots of balls that I give away to special customers. Roman was happy.

‘I told him he should buy the New York Yankees [baseball team] but he said, “No thank you, I have enough trouble with Chelsea as it is. Let me finish off what I am doing with them first.”’

Reportedly Roman Abramovich politely enquired whether service was included, not even flinching at the bill.
