Man bites dog to rescue puppy

BEIJING, China (Reuters) -- A Chinese man bit to death a fierce dog that was savaging his beloved puppy.

Awakened by the puppy's yelps, a villager named Geng first tried to chase the dog away by hurling watermelons at it, a local newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The farmer then threw himself on the dog, clamping his teeth around its neck and eventually killing it.

"The two were rolling around on the ground and fighting for nearly 10 minutes," the Yanzhao Cosmopolitan News in the northern province of Hebei said.

Geng suffered deep cuts to his arms and was treated in hospital. The puppy survived.

Boy, 5, subdues rabid fox to protect family

KINGSTOWN, North Carolina (AP) -- A 5-year-old boy grabbed a rabid fox by the neck and pinned it to the ground during a family cookout, protecting six other children until his stepfather could kill the animal.

"I wanted to protect my little brother," said Rayshun McDowell, who battled the fox in the front yard of his home Sunday in Kingstown, a town about 50 miles west of Charlotte.

The fox bit Rayshun in the leg, but the 61-pound-boy held the animal down for more than a minute. Animal control officials said Tuesday that test results confirmed the fox had rabies, which is fatal unless treated before symptoms appear. Rayshun is undergoing treatment.

"I looked out the window and Rayshun had the fox by the neck and was pushing it into the ground," said his mother, Shinda Linder. "I couldn't believe what I was seeing."

Rayshun's stepfather, Ryan Thompson, pulled the boy off the animal and kicked it. A neighbor fired a handgun three times but the fox continued to advance.

Thompson, wearing a cast because of a broken leg, said he used a stick and his crutch to beat the fox to death.

Rayshun, meanwhile, asked only for a Band-Aid and didn't complain of any pain.

"Rayshun was really calm and wasn't upset," his mother said. "I couldn't believe he would do something like that. He was so brave, and I was a wreck."

Rabies attacks the nervous system and is transmitted through saliva. It often makes animals aggressive. A 6-year-old girl who was attacked by a fox the same day at her home nearby also is being treated.

5 die in dairy farm manure pit

BRIDGEWATER, Virginia (AP) -- Exposure to methane gas led to the deaths of five people, but whether they suffocated from the fumes or drowned in 18 inches of liquefied cow manure may never be known, authorities said.

Neighbors and relatives tend a drain at a Virginia dairy farm where five people died in a manure pit.

No autopsies were planned, in part because investigators believed the deaths on a Rockingham County dairy farm were accidental, said Capt. J.B. Wittig of the county sheriff's department. Authorities said they could not rule out the possibility that the five drowned or died of another cause.

"It was very, very quick," Wittig said of the deaths.

The victims were identified as Scott Showalter, 34; his wife, Phyillis, 33; their daughters Shayla, 11, and Christina, 9; and Amous Stoltzfus, 24.

Authorities said Showalter entered a manure pit to unclog a pipe Monday evening and was quickly overcome by the methane. Stoltzfus, apparently believing Showalter had a heart attack, went in after him and also passed out.

Another farm worker alerted Showalter's wife, who rushed to the pit followed by Shayla and Christina.

"They all climbed into the pit to help," Sheriff Donald Farley said.

The victims had no warning of the deadly gas that had built up in the pit.

"You cannot smell it, you cannot see it, but it's an instant kill," said Dan Brubaker, a family friend who oversaw the construction of the pit decades earlier.

Farmers typically take pains to ventilate manure pits where methane often gathers. On Tuesday, a cousin of Scott Showalter questioned whether runoff from a pile of cattle feed could have trickled into the pit and accelerated the formation of the gas.

"It rained, and some of it ran down into this holding pit, it fermented and made a toxic gas," said Bruce Good, who saw Showalter about once a week.

The sheriff said Showalter apparently was transferring manure from one small pit to a larger holding pond when a pipe clogged. About once a week, waste is pumped from the roughly 9-foot-deep pit into a larger pond.

Showalter shimmied through the 4-foot opening into the concrete enclosure, which is similar to an underground tank.

"It was probably something he had done a hundred times," Farley said.

The deaths struck hard in this picturesque farming region dotted with red barns, gleaming silos and church steeples that peek above rolling fields.

The Showalters were well known in the community where neighbors do each other's laundry. Their two surviving daughters were being cared for by family members, and friends tended to the family's animals the day after the tragedy.

"The cows have to be milked twice a day, even in an ordeal like this," said Frank Showalter, Scott's great-uncle, standing a few feet from where his relatives died.

The Showalters milked 103 cows on their farm west of Harrisonburg in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. They belonged to a conservative Mennonite church whose members shun many of the trappings of modern society but drive cars, use telephones and, according to police, take modern farm-safety precautions.

Fellow church members were in shock Tuesday, said the Rev. Nathan Horst, a Mennonite bishop.

"We've never had a tragedy of this magnitude," he said.

Man beats stray peacock he mistook for vampire

July 2, 2007
NEW YORK -- A peacock that roamed into the parking lot of a fast-food restaurant was attacked by a man who vilified it as a vampire, animal-control authorities said.
Beaten so fiercely that most of its tail feathers fell out, the bird was euthanized, said Richard Gentles of the city's Center for Animal Care and Control. ''It's just unbelievable,'' Gentles said.

The peacock, a male several years old, wandered into the lot in Staten Island and perched on a car hood Thursday. Employees were feeding it when the man appeared.

The man seized the bird by the neck, hurled it to the ground and started kicking and stomping it. ''He was going crazy,'' said worker Felicia Finnegan, 19.

Asked what he was doing, she said, the attacker explained, '' 'I'm killing a vampire!' ''

Police were looking for the attacker. It was unclear how the bird got to the lot.

Toddler Sodomized by Pitbull

http://www.breitbart.tv/html/2928.html

A two-year-old pitbull, who showed no previous signs of aggression, sexually assaulted a toddler on Sunday. "A little boy was home with his family, and the family pit bull actually sodomized the boy," said a police detective.

The 2-year-old boy suffered serious injuries and needed surgery. The family members and some neighbor's had to resort to beating the dog to stop its sexual attack on the boy. The family say they have had the dog since it was a puppy.

"The intent, apparently, wasn't to hurt the child. ... My understanding is the child had no bites on him at all. ... I guess the message is be respectful of a dog, until you absolutely know the animal," said the director of the local SPCA.
