my sister has lived in downtown medellín for the last two years. she's never had any congress with any of the FARC/ELN/EPL types, and finds it safer than calí or caracas, both of which she's lived in. she tends to favor the belén or san javier districts, so the violence in the northern sectors doesn't impact her that directly. but given the size of medellín, (3,000,000) it's kinda ridiculous to say the whole deal-e-oh is hyper-dangerous.
case in point: according to 2005 crime figures, st. louis has 37.9 murders per 100,000 residents while medellín had 35 per 100,000.
