dude no.. i see the promos for this all the time when my kid watches Noggin or whatever that channel is..
the characters look like tepid Gimme Gimme Octopus ripoffs and the mascot lead dude is this black guy with red hair who is flamingly gay. i'm all for sneaking subversive msgs into children's content (pee-wee's playhouse, tom + jerry) but this show looks like the cable equivalent of buying your kid a sex pistols baby tee.

Favorite bits from what I've seen:
- song explaining to Muno what's okay to bite (e.g., watermelon) and what isn't okay to bite (e.g., Foofa) - weird-ass electro-lite cover of the Free Design's "Kites are Fun" - magic robot summoning MYA from the ether to teach a dance
Say whatever the hell you want about this, you freaking know there's nothing you want more in life than a magic robot that can produce Mya on demand

The other day we printed out masks from the website and laminated them and my daughter told me what all the characters's names were. Fun stuff.

I think the Beeps likes it because of the variety. It seems like all those other shows -- Backyardigans, Calliou, that sell-out Dora -- are all pretty static. Like Sesame Street and Electric Company, the shows I grew up on, this one has a skit, a musical montage, some kids dancing, another skit, some weird Pitfall shit, and the guy from Devo drawing a cat. It holds her (short) attention span pretty well, and tonight, she was sticking her fingers out as some kid was counting to five.

beeeeeps!
― i love to hear this again and again (gbx), Saturday, 8 November 2008 04:26 (seventeen years ago)
"yeah i think its supposed to be for 3 y/os"
not entirely though. it's totally made to appeal to hip adults and college kids as well as little kids. this makes it different from shows like the doodlebops or the wiggles which are made completely with little kids in mind.
― scott seward, Saturday, 8 November 2008 11:26 (seventeen years ago)
Sounds like hating the show for the people who watch it. I mean, I listen to Wilco, but I can't fucking stand other people who listen to Wilco. Doesn't have anything to do with the band.
You could argue the same for Spongebob for its pop references, Sesame Street for having celebrities "stop by", or any movie ever released by Pixar.
There might be a dorm room filled with stone hipsters digging on the Gabba, just like Teletubbies used to be known for being so trippy. I hope I never stumble across that dorm room or I'm going straight to the R.A. But in the meantime, my little girl just wants to dancey dance.
― ⊕-----⊕-----⊕ (Pleasant Plains), Saturday, 8 November 2008 17:23 (seventeen years ago)
i have no problem with gabba fans. just saying it's a MARKETING thing. they decided on purpose to appeal to kids, their parents, and the boyz in the dorm. ain't no hepcats walking around in wiggles sneakers or t-shirts.
maybe the blatant nature of it bugs me? the whole "LOOK WE R INSTANT KULT KLASSIC AND 2 KOOL 4 SKOOL" attitude. but i'm a meany. and i have no doubt that lil' kids love it to death for its silliness. lil' kids love lots of stuff that is colorful and silly. and so do i! i was all set to love it, but i never felt loving towards it. not like i do toward flapjack or courage the cowardly dog or chowder. all shows that would appeal to fun-loving adults, but that just seem more fun-loving somehow. (and they just happen to be 3 shows that all 3 of us at the ages of 40, 5, and 3 happen to dig a bunch.)

He's teaching little kids how to clap by moving their hands together, except they've opted to use an 808 handclap in lieu of an actual handclap sound.
