i'm finally getting around to listening to all the metal stuff that has accumulated in the last month. reviewed some reissues/boxed sets on the Metal Mind label for Filthy Phil Freeman (He is the new editor in chief at Metal Edge magazine) and they were a ton of fun. Paradox, Znowhite, Defiance, Artillery (4 discs!). Also just got a bunch of cool stuff from the Autumn Wind label. They put out lots of noise/neofolk/neoclassical/industrial/metal CDs. Vomit Orchestra, 20.SV, Kaniba, Black Seas Of Infinity, Arbeit, Drear. I think I'm gonna feature the label in Decibel next month. I do a different label every month. If you know of any crazy labels that put out lots of stuff, let me know. I need a new one every month. Doesn't have to be strictly metal. I'd like to feature some more crazy/noise labels too in the future. I review anywhere from 5 to 10 releases in each feature.
recent stuff i'm getting around to:
mos generator - songs for future gods (small stone)
greenleaf - agents of ahriman (small stone)
krohm - the haunting presence (moribund)
dodsferd - cursing your will to live (moribund)
satan's host - burning the born again...(a new philosphy) (moribund)
atreyu - lead sails paper anchor (hollywood)
wolfpack unleashed - anthems of resistance (napalm)
helloween - gambling with the devil (spv)
diabolic force - old school attack (no colours)
nargaroth - semper fidelis (no colours)
satanic warmaster - revelation (no colours)
orenda - the funeral (no colours)
alastor - noble north (no colours)
those who bring the torture - s/t (no colours)
sodom - the final sign of evil (spv)
vreid - i krig (candlelight)
motorhead - better motorhead than dead - live at hammersmith (spv)
axel rudi pell - diamonds unlocked (spv)
moonspell - under satanae (spv)
limbonic art - legacy of evil (candlelight)
monster magnet - 4-way diablo (spv)
coffins/the arm and sword of a bastard god (20 buck spin)
abacinate/godrot - split cd (epitomite)

The only Wim Mertens I know is the soundtrack to Belly Of An Architect, and only due to watching Belly Of An Architect multiple times. It didn't make much of an impression, but maybe there Mertens was trying to sound like Michael Nyman, Greenaway's regular musical foil at the time.
― Jon Lewis, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 16:52 (sixteen years ago) link
Most of Mertens stuff sounds like Nyman, but some of it is still fun.

i need a better copy of the frank wright on actuel; it got dropped and there's a HUGE gash in the b-side that tics for probably 10 minutes. it was free, but ya know... i could also use a better copy of the frank wright on ESP with the reddish cover. the quintet(?) record, i think. it has some annoying pops and surface noise.

i love supermax. i've got love machine, fly w/me and world of today on mp3. i love everything i've heard. to me he is the epitomy of the beardo/cosmic sound. german, slow disco beats, tribal drums, spaced out production, songs about marijuana. this is the first of his records i've owned and it just sounds so amazing played loud.
what do you think of that will powers? weird record, eh?

yeah, i'm sorta torn on planet p project. it's not the best, but it's nowhere close to bad. it is pink vinyl! there were like 10 copies of another one of their albums in the stacks for 2$ each that i'll prolly pick up a while later. supposedly had a hit or 2 on it? what really sold me on it was Peter Hauke's production. he did a lot of work with Supermax who are like one of my faves right now.
