I've been reading a book on "how to get your newborn to stop screaming" (about to be a dad in like 3 weeks) and white noise is a big tip they give! LOUD hissy stuff, like hair dryer, vacuum cleaner, radio static cranked up

wife and I are trying to figure out which drone or noize records to play for baby

i have a buddha machine next to my bed

can the buddha machine do multiple loops simultaneously? because this buddha wall app can run several loops at once and it is great.

ur supposed to buy multiple machines iirc

neveragl story (zvookster), Thursday, 15 April 2010 21:42 (fourteen years ago) link

my friend richard has had that ^ one for years. he did try it on their baby, but not white-noisey enough for crying craziness.
dmr i like the idea of going all sound art to figure out which white noise will make a newborn not cry. record the vacuum, running water, hairdryer, pan sizzling, tv/radio static, then make a mix-tape, apply in real life

Does anyone know where to find mp3s of ambient noise? I keep returning to this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPoqNeR3_UA&feature=youtube_gdata

But would like something that didn't require me to be online and on youtube.

Star Trek TNG engine sound is pretty great, Coffitivity can be useful, and brown noise is good but the rest of the stuff I've found is pretty mediocre.

If I was able to find more like the Enterprise noise that would be great. Just kind of big, hollow, humming noise is the most soothing I think.

there's an mp3 download link for the Star Trek thing right below the video (just click "show more")

and the Internet Archive has a lot of stuff like this. just search for terms like "sleep" and "ambient" and "relaxation" and you'll find all sorts of mp3 downloads. 70 minute storm, for example.

Oh yeah, you can download the MP3! Awesome!

Also: This stereo brown noise is excellent. Great tip about Archive.org. Thank you!

I get that a lot of people like to capture and playback sounds of nature, but I think industrial ambient field recordings are underrated. I should find a big, unused subway tunnel to sit in and record all the drips and distant rumblings.

I know the kids today like to get high off of them, but binaural recordings are okay too.

I made A Spotify playlist of ambient engine drones, because this sort of thing fascinates me. I wonder if people actually play hair dryer sound effects to keep their babies calm. "Vintage Air Conditioner" and "Clothes Dryer Hum" are particularly soothing.

i guess not really white noise, but sound generator browser sites are often helpful to me. i've been working and listening to: https://mynoise.net/NoiseMachines/polyrhythmBeatGenerator.php

for n hours with the animated slider on 4x, and holy fuck i think i'm quite insane at this point.

I shared this with my girlfriend and she loves it but also asks if a timer could be added so that it turns off after a while.

Not the first person to suggest that!

You can set a timer to stop playing whatever is playing from iphone settings. Scroll down to the end of the alert sounds.
