i only know a handful of tracks on either comp, but the don ray (played at home last night) and the idris muhammad are 2 of my fave songs.

i liked idris on röyksopps back to mine but spectrum 2 seems to have all the patrick adams productions. and 'do it any way you wanna,' which is beardo. and one track that is just a little too fast and has creepy whale songs in the background, although i could be making this up.

i own both and i'd be very unhappy to get rid of either.

that said, vol 3 has something like five all-time classic tracks ("goin up in smoke", "could heaven ever be like this", "solar flight", "heartache no 9", "groove on down") whereas vol 2 has something like two ("i want you for myself", "spread love"). vol 2 has incredibly sexy art, tho.

i call those "all-time classic" because those are the ones that i can hum off the top of my head when i look at the tracklistings ... i guess your mileage will vary based on how many of those classic tracks you already own. i could always drag them out and listen to them if you need a more detailed breakdown on the "minor" classics (everything on all three of these comps is really, really great).

BTW, if you can find it volume 1 is really, really, REALLY fantastic ... it's got the john davis & monster orchestra vocal of "bourgie bourgie", clyde alexander's "gotta get your love", two man sound's "que tal america", azoto's "san salvador", fresh band's "come back lover", rare pleasure's "let me down easy" and logg's "you've got that something) (with leroy burgess)

oh and of course you must get disco forever

highlights from CD1

bt express - "does it feel good to you". awesome fluid slap bass playing, great chorus with rick james style "OWWW!" refrain. an excellent slice of disco-into-boogie that would do joey proud.

the brothers - "under the skin". ok this is all about the intro and outro. the intro struts like a cowboy with swinging hi-hat / guitar combo. the midsection is pretty unspired, with not a lot more going on than boring and redundant string & horn flourishes. and a really lame beardo bongo breakdown in the middle. but there's a great sax solo in the outro that puts life back into the track.

eddie kendricks - "going up in smoke". gosh, not sure what i can say about this that hasn't already been said. "these days and times" 4 eva.

hi voltage - "somewhere beyond". this is the fruitiest track yet. the tentative piano tapping, chickenscratch guitar, synth drums and synth hits in the intro aresilly enough. then in comes bongos and horns, just like "under the skin". but then in comes this totally "fffffresh" synthetic bass playing. it's somewhere between was not was and grover washington jr. not really in a good way. ok maybe in a good way. "cleaning up the neighborhood" music from an late 70s movie about kids in philadelphia or something.

oh i forgot, there's a bongo breakdown in "somewhere beyond" too. actually this track is sort of bonkers in the middle. if DMX Krew collaborated with the idjut boys it might sound something like this.

delegation - "heartache no. 9". ok it's hard to explain exactly why this song's so great. musically it's nothing special, but the vocals are fantastic. they tell the story of all the heartaches the guy's gone through in order from 1 to 8. and the twist is that the girl across the dancefloor that he's singing to is heartache #9. irresistible gimmick.

mandré - "solar flight". so basically this is the song they invented the term "space disco" to describe.

syreeta - "can't shake your love". there's lots of good reasons to like syreeta, like she was stevie wonder's wife and he tried out a lot of his weirdest electronics on her music. and for those reasons i'm suspicious of her too. but this song is the real deal. for most of the beginning it sounds like a tight but unremarkable boogie track, but then she goes "can't do it can't do it can't do it ... your love keeps taking me HIGHER". and these really terse piano figures come in over the synth bass and the boogie beat somehow locks in on the 4x4 so it gets this totally contemporary bounce. this track is super tight.

jo boyer - "isabelle & the rain". aside from two sick drum breaks this track is basically schmaltzy trash. all through the beginning there's a novelty synth that sounds sorta like someone with a thin voice doing an ella fitzgerald impression. then at the end they try to class it up with this virtuosic piano solo and big band orchestration. it's awful.

and that's really it for the first side. the track by koxo is sort of like "under the skin" with vocals, nothing really remarkable there.

and the last track, "hot disco night" is a totally stripped down afro/latin percussion drum workout with dudes saying sleazy stuff ("are you ready? ha ha ... oh!") in the background. and it's got tons of echo and beats bouncing between speakers in stereo. i'm pretty sure the idjuts reedited this one too. or if they didn't, it sounds like something they would do. which would be redundant, because it already sounds like an idjuts edit to begin with. i guess this has a time and place but i've heard a lot of this sort of thing lately and i'm actually not really that impressed by it TBH.

will do disc 2 tomorrow, unless you someone begs me to stop.
