Wearing socks with Birkenstocks was all the rage in 1989. That's what separated the KoolKats of Northern California from the poseurs of everywhere else. It was also very practical because the intense heat of the Central Valley or East Bay foothills caused your feet to sweat and the socks had both absorbing and cushioning properties. The outfit was often punctuated with a visor from a local golf course with much hair doffing over the lid.
