Shortly before the 2012 election, I was giving a speech in Reno, NV. I was there in part to fire up a group of Independent minded, small L Libertarians who could best be described as fiscal conservatives and social moderates. At one point I was asking them to yell out what they wanted and expected from the government. People offered things like “cut spending”, “secure the borders”, “pay down the $16 trillion debt”, “audit the Fed”, “a flat tax” and “a balanced budget amendment”. I told them those were all very important things to work towards and anyone of them will likely take enormous time and effort if in fact they ever come to fruition. Then I told them what I really wanted the most. It was a Q-Tip.

The crowd looked at me as if I had grown a second head. The point I made to them was that as good as a balanced budget amendment sounded, I had just taken a shower in the hotel and they didn’t have any Q-Tips in the bathroom. While the big things are indeed important, sometimes when you have wet ears, all you really need is a Q-Tip!

dang, that's really great. what's the student like?

struggles academically (several grade levels behind). unlike 95% of kids at our school his goal is graduation, not college. rough around edges, very funny, very popular with girls. dating straight A student. very poor, lives in a neighborhood with lots of gang violence, sometimes gets jumped but has managed to steer clear. older brother went to our school, got accepted to a UC w/ a full ride but dropped out due to drug and financial problems. most people in his neighborhood who get out do so via enlisting in military. we're really close on a personal level but nothing i do seems to work to steer him in a better direction academically. one time he invited me to a party at his house. i told him absolutely not and that it was more or less illegal for me to fraternize with my students, he said not to worry and that there'd be older women there. when i told him firmly no he offered to snapchat me during the party (i don't have a snapchat). i feel like he is in freefall because due to DACA stuff his family might be relocating to mexico this year, and he is figuring it's all his efforts here are for naught if that happens. i tried to talk to him about taking things a day at a time and doing your best w/ what's in front of you rather than worry about stuff outside of his control.

he wears diamond studs and likes mumble rap but i have convinced him to give "old school" a shot ... i got him into mobb deep etc but he doesn't like wu tang much ... yet. i've tried to get him into other music. when i played him some reissue stuff off now again he said "this is the junk old people in my neighborhood listen to when they have streets protests" and when i played him suicide he said it sounded really amateur and asked if alan vega was me.

i told him that was rich coming from a guy who gets 95% of his rap music off soundcloud

well the drawing is incredible. good call on the one day at a time stuff. hope this dude graduates.

not only is he graduating, he scored in the mid-20s on his ACT and should at least be getting into CSUs w/ grants as a result

nice! I'm pretty sure I left a sharpie doodle or three on some bathroom stalls at SDSU. he should go see if he can't do any better than my 15 year old masterpieces that are almost surely gone

yeah, the rightful claim to the SDSU acronym has been a hot point of contention between Jackrabbits and Aztecs for generations. the way I see it, your institution beat mine to founding by 16 years (plus, you're not relying on one of those troublesome indigenous culture co-opts for a mascot name) so you win and you can have it.
