been you-tubin some oldies-but-goodies like the 1971 ALICE COOPER original band jamming a long version of "Is It My Body" w/Alice doing a sorta striptease and GRAND FUNK RR wailing "Inside Looking Out" on some smalltown PA TV station in 1969. Mark Farner looks about 17. from the mid/late 70s: THIN LIZZY stretching out an incredible slow-blues version of "Don't Believe A Word" if you think you might like this you would.

been obsessing on the YOKO ONO video of "Walking On Thin Ice" the long one w/footage of her & John fucking -- they were pioneering TMI narcissists! also it's a great GREAT song and the NYC shots rule.

there's good early 80s NYC music video, like the BUSH TETRAS' claasic "Too Many Creeps" w/truckloads of authentic lower east side sleaze and even a brief shot of the infamous Tin Pan Alley bar in Times Square.

I even found a performance clip of THE FEELIES doing a raveup "Fa Ce La" in 1980 w/stoic Anton Fier on drums and Million & Mercer hopping all over the stage like jackrabbits. a far cry from their REM-influenced later incarnation and filmed in flickery faded black & white that looks like an old kinetscope or something.

yeah totally. great production too, the guitar freakout on the last 30-45 seconds of 'self-starter' should be totally out of place in a pop tune but it's f'ing perfect.

now i'm listening to TRESPASS by GENESIS for the first time! how exciting. I don't think I ever knew that TRESPASS - in the states - was on Impulse!

the first song, "Looking For Someone", is pretty much everything that people hate about prog. i mean, it's almost everything that people hate about Styx.

scott seward, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 17:51 (sixteen years ago) link

yeesh, i don't think i'm in the mood for Trespass. Kinda sounds like shit to me. production-wise and otherwise. maybe the second side is better. maybe they needed phil. for the record, trick of the tail is my fave genesis album. not that i've heard them all. i put on a wendy waldman album instead.

scott seward, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 18:03 (sixteen years ago) link

i thought their old stuff was pretty damn bad.

I liked the other one, thought most of it was pretty good with a couple moments close to great (like "No Hits"). in general I wish they turned down the indie and turned up the heavy but it's not a deal-breaker for me

didn't make it all the way through the new one but there was a stretch of good stuff on side 2. if you hated the first one you probably don't need to bother, though

hmmmm, that looks fun scott, but i fear it goes the same way most moog shit does....

im still on a serious willie neslon kick...whats going on?!!!! also really into the recent michael hurley record. i suppose its better than dory previn ive been on a jag with (theres a one page bit in uncut with her, so evidently im onto something, if only a step behind whoever writes for them these days).

picked up the mahjong record for unknown reasons(in shop after weird meeting)...but like it..

i feel like ive heard that ginger baker record and i want to blame jack rose for it...ill have to look around for weird cdr's i put someplace dumb.

i somehow ggot to thinking about exile in guyville on the way home, but only have it on tape..and have to dig ot out

ok, so looking for wee liz phair's girlysounds tapes i came across a youtube ting of her doing fuck and run in '95 and she plays it entirely dift than i toughtmyself i college...or maybe someone taught me, i did have a v. talent freind who used to play it at openmic-like events and scare hardcore boys who were into her cause she used to play with brendan from foogazi...now, whatever happened to her?

maybe its not all two finger chord shapes, but a fun little number regardless

"hmmmm, that looks fun scott, but i fear it goes the same way most moog shit does...."

oh it does. pretty crazy version of within you without you though.

i've never taken the dory plunge. despite her dollar record status. i'll get to her!

what i was digging last nite: mancini's soundtrack to The Hawaiians and John Barry's soundtrack to The Last Valley. both are great moody mood music.
